Recoilless rifle with an under-barrel 5.56mm carbine.
Developed by Bofors in the late 1960s, intended to be deployed on the squad level.
This weapon was killed off by Bofors early in testing, never even made it to military trials.

My instant reaction to this was that it's not appropriate to this thread because it's not a weapon/military.
But then I remember the Poles made some utterly retarded claims that it could be used for chemical warfare by filling the sprayer tanks nerve gas and squirting it out over the enemy.
So the Belphegor is a strong contender for the most retarded and shitposty "military design" ever to enter production.

> The shells for the weapon were extremely heavy, far too heavy for a man to load manually, at 330 kg each.
> As a result, each of them had to be carried by means of a ceiling-mounted trolley from their rack to a roller-mounted tray at the breech.
> Once on the tray, four soldiers could then push it into the breech to load it. The whole process took 10 minutes per shot from loading, aiming, elevating to firing.

The S&W Light Rifle is a very bizarre weapon to me, its overall design and features are so unintuitive. The design is from 1939, and I feel like there had to have been at least enough knowledge in the U.S arms industry by that point to design a more proper subgun by that point, even if it would probably still have been something expensive to machine.

The Marlin UD42 is basically what the Light Rifle would have been if Ed Pomeroy hadn't been (presumably) abusing illicit substances when designing it. More expensive than what was necessary for the type of weapon, but that was typical for the 1930s, and the UD42 ultimately still made sense and worked fine for its role.

I always laugh at people shitting on the L85A1 but ignore the likes of the INSAS or the M7. The M7 is so bad that not only does it break simply reloading but the recoil is terrible, runs out of ammo quicker, harder to hit targets and is so heavy that infantrymen complain about pain carrying it. But because it's American, it's ignored and said to be amazing despite the constant reports on how bad it is. The FAMAS melts while auto firing? Ignored.

Everyone thinks that it's a spotting rifle at first, because that's the only interpretation which makes sense, but no, it was genuinely intended to be a combination recoilless rifle and assault rifle.
It did that in testing, but the end conclusion was the inevitable "... but what's that supposed to be good for?" hence why these never saw serial production.

It looks retarded but a ball foregrip actually provides amazing ergos, especially mounted at a 45° angle away from the receiver as shown here. You get much better control of the gun on both the vertical and the horizontal (using the barrel as the third axis of the cartesian frame) at the expense of poorer recoil control on that barrel axis. That's because human hands are very well suited at gripping spheres, remember that we're at the top of the food chain because we throw rocks better than anyone.

This idea was reused for a picatinny foregrip some time ago.

In the 1950s Navy couldn't get supersonic fighters onto carriers - the supercarrier USS United States was cancelled because it was retarded big and retarded expensive and with the advent of Air Force planes being able to strike anywhere in the world and also being sole distributor of the nuclear arsenal, Navy was very concerned that it's being outmoded.
So they made Convair F2Y Sea Dart as a supersonic seaplane and others, like Martin P6M Sea Master flying boat which was supposed to deliver nuclear bombs. Sea Dart failed mainly because it was shit and tended to violently dissasemble in mid-air, but Sea Master was almost adopted - it was only cancelled after ICBMs became a thing. Sea Dart I don't mind, but Sea Master was a very beautiful aircraft and I wish it was retained for non-nuclear duties.
The saddest part is that Glenn. L. Martin worked with Wright brothers to make military airplanes, made the first naval bomber in history and literally taught Boeing how to fly but after Sea Master was cancelled the company fully focused on making rockets instead of planes. P6M Sea Master was the last plane they built.

He had a Pederson device type thing so they could still use Nagants during the transition, for anything up to 250 meters you didn't need to change the sights and he figured that was enough.

The USSR used to use a 7.62x25mm chamber insert for Nagants to save money for training.

He freely acknowledged that, he assumed that engagements over 250m would be crew served weapons and that individual arms would be solely used for defense of those weapons, suppression and area fire. Interestingly one of his justifications was a early take on it being OK if you only wounded someone. He figured penetration didn't matter in open terrain and in urban environments everything was masonry anyway.

The rough outline for the war itself was something like:
>12 man squads
>3 man fire teams, 1 LAD and 2 guys to carry ammo, they are armed with SMGs or converted Nagants
>Eventually it would be 2 LADs, one ammo guy with a converted Nagant with the ability to turn it back to 7.62x54 as a marksman
>One squad with nothing but pistols and 2 MGs, 2 mortars
>Company has heavy platoon with 50/50 mix of MGs and mortars,
>Heavy platoon has squad with 9 LAD, 3 AT rifles

Post war he calculated that with aluminum and Bakelite he could get it (LAD-2?) to the same weight as a Nagant and that would be the point that it would become the standard infantry arm.

It is a neat idea, suppression fire with aimed single shots would be hilarious as all hell.

>pop pop pop pop pop pop!
>They gonna run out of ammo soon right?
>Krauts faces when the enemy platoon has 50K+ rounds as standard load out
>pop pop pop pop pop pop! continues

I really wish i could find the autist forum where i found out about it, it was from a English speaker who could read Russian. There is a book in Russia all about the guy, it is frustrating because he is almost unknown outside of Russia.

It's basically the same transition as going from full power rifles to intermediate rifles, trading range and power for the guys who don't contribute to firepower except when doing assaults and personal close-in defense. Although I'm sure some will say he took the concept a little too far.

Why not? Innovation means trying out ideas and sometimes they fail, sometimes they work. History comes back on itself sometimes, why not a fan driven flying saucer armed with Gast guns? They save weight and don't need power to operate.

The Nazi's engineers made backpack mounted one man helicopters, they were not safe but they worked. Sort of. Sometimes you just have to stick with a idea until it works and until the world is ready.

Like triplanes or Zepplins.

Here's info on the remote armament variations:
>T7.62FA turret - armament: 7.62 mm machinegun (80 ready rounds), traverse: 360° (at 60°/second), elevation: -10° to +25° (at 40°/second).
>T12.7FA turret - armament: 12.7mm M2HB (100 ready rounds), traverse: 360° (at 60°/second), elevation: -10° to +50° (at 40°/second). Gunmen of the telescopic sight of a 1.5 × 5 × and two rate.
>There was also a T20FA-HS turret (armed with 20mm Oerlikon KAD-B17) for the R3 Capraia recce vehicle but it was probably too heavy for the Gorgona.

Here's all the good stuff:
1 or 2
>Development
The OTO R 2.5 Gorgona vehicle has been developed as a private venture by OTO Melara and was announced in 1982. Two versions are currently being offered; an unarmed police model and a combat model which can be fitted with various types of armament. Many of the automotive components are also used in the OTO R3 reconnaissance vehicle which is fully described in the preceding entry.

>Description
The body of the Gorgona is of welded aluminium armour 15 mm thick with the bullet-proof glass being 32 mm thick which gives the same degree of protection to the crew as the aluminium armour. This provides complete protection from 7.62 mm (NATO) small arms fire.
There is a stowage area at the front, commander, driver and two men in the centre, and the engine and transmission at the rear. Each crew member enters and leaves the vehicle via an individual side door which has an electrically-operated window in its upper part. Mounted in the forward part of the vehicle is an electrically-operated winch with a capacity of 2000 kg.
The power plant is installed in the rear of the vehicle and includes the engine, automatic transmission and the transfer case. The engine oil is cooled by a heat exchanger anger that transfers heat to the water of the main circuit. The automatic transmission is coupled to the two-speed transfer case which permanently drives the front and rear wheels through a controlled differential. The cooling system consists of two radiators installed in the rear of the vehicle cooled by two fan-air conveyor units driven through V-belts and thermostatic devices. Electric power is supplied at 24 V by a 1200 W generator to two 90 Ah batteries. The vehicle is fully amphibious, being propelled in the water by its wheels with steering being accomplished in a similar manner to that of land operations.

Looks like a brother to the Pinzgauer. I want one of these little things like you wouldn't believe. Make it a cozy little mountain vehicle. Gun rack for a K31, STGW90, and STGW57. Wood paneling, small folding bed and chair in the back. Put some supplies and emergency equipment in the storage and take a road trip in the fall up the length of the rockies and hang around the mountains in it. Up at 5am drinking from a mug of hot choccy watching the sun rise from a captains chair and a surplus Swiss blanket over my lap, that's the dream for me.

>Looks like a brother to the Pinzgauer.
It's objectively better than the Pinzgauer in most ways.
One of the funniest things about the Volvo C303-series is that if you wanted to, you could order one from any Volvo dealership in the US back in the day.
Back in the 1970s, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tested these vehicles and found that they met or exceeded all US standards for passenger safety and emissions. So they were always legal to import and register for road use in the US, without needing any special exceptions or grey market paper fudgery.
