This is also state by state. Many states have civil immunity if it was justifiable homicide, you can't be sued civilly at all unless you're found criminally guilty. In other states that's not the case, or it's only the case in certain kinds of cases (like home invasion).

The real change will be self-driving cars. Got to try out a Waymo for the first time a month ago, and was genuinely extremely impressed. I'd trust my kids and parents to it no hesitation. That technology in our own vehicles we own is what's going to be the big disruption for this stuff in America. We'll still have roads and cars, but driving will no longer be required to make use of them 99.9% of the time (and you don't need a license to drive off road anyway), so as a luxury it'll be fine to be way stricter with it. States vary a great deal on whether you need to retreat or not when out and about ("stand your ground" etc), but inside your own home is considered different everywhere. There are some really deep mammalian tribal/lizard brain reactions that can come into play in certain situations. Some people are more affected then others, but most of us can feel at least a brief surge of irrational rage in some cases or as arguments heat up. My theory is it goes right back to posturing in the wilds over territory or something, some sort of fight/flight level instinct. You can definitely learn to tamp it down or catch yourself and disengage, at least if you're not a true low-IQ retard or fucking your brain on drugs or whatever, but I do think it's a skill and/or something that takes some time and wisdom to develop.

I'm no scientist but we do have a lot of deep seated physiological and hormonal stuff that can pop out in modern civilization in unhelpful places sometimes. Like, people who are feeling really hungry often tend to act worse as well, I've certain experienced that.
