Swedish military equipment always seemed the best to me.

It has the "it just werks" philosophy of soviet arms, avoiding feature creep and not coming with a bunch of logistical/financial/technical headaches that you get with american wunderwaffe, but unlike slavic stuff, it isn't shit and won't fall apart on you. It's "good enough" without that being a cope for it not actually being good.

unironicially they do when none russians have them.
Russian gear is deadly in the hands of czechs, poles, various balkans groups others, vietnamese.

The weak link is the fact that the average russian soldier is a drunken lout raised in a society that punishes merit and thus turns out belligerent lazy drunken retards.
I have a lot of russian surp guns and they all run well despite being beat to shit and 60 years old. Their weapons are designed to operated by literal retards so theyre simple.
Obviously they dont compete with modern or even contemporary nato anything, but they do "just werk"

Swedish guns are not crap.

They sell Carl Gustafs still to this day. Their cluster bombs were the standard until everyone agreed cluster bombs should not be used.
Their Archer artillery systems are world leading.
Their coms systems are maybe only outdone by America's.

The only gear of theirs that suck are their mags for their standard issue rifles until they fixed them about 5 years ago(not even a Swedish original design), the weather ponchos, and their plate carriers.

Yep. They even signed a deal to produce the planes in Brazil but that whole deal is in a limbo. Pentagon still hasn't signed off on it. And given that Lula's in charge and there's a 50% tariff on them now, it never will be approved.

It's incredibly hard to sell or do joint manufacturing of planes whose parts you don't actually own.

This makes sense when you think about it. The rafale got humiliated by Pakistan, so it's a non-starter. The f-16 is okay, but it's too American for Peruvian politics ATM. That leaves the Gripen as the best pick.

That pic is for the Gripen C (variant of Gripen specifically created to be NATO compatible so it's natural it'll have more US made components than usual, like the Super Tucano variant NATO compatible), SAAB had alternatives to most avionics and countries like Brazil removed most American components and as many non-local components as they could.

Only if you're an importer, with a production line replacing an engine is trivial
>b-but the airframe!
I said trivial. The Mirage III, MiG-29, MiG-23, most chink jets were modified to fit an engine of the same class. The F-16 (79) was an extreme case.
The most important part of a plane is the supply chain and production rights, something that for some planes you can't own (F-35).

The exports restrictions on the Gripen aren't related to the engine but the US gov itself and replacing the engine only would make it more expensive, if they replace it they'll use a different method to restrict and discourage exports (economic sanctions, price dumping and trade flexing, etc). Now if the US keeps acting like a schizo dipshit then they'll end replacing it by force
>the T boomer just sanctioned Brazil with tariffs because his bro, bolzonaro-the-coup-d-etat-retard is getting justice and will rot in jail.

All euro fighters are a testament to their cowardice
they all are made to be so tiny that they have no room for fuel or munitions in order to perform missions in a global space, IE ability to actually truly contribute to coalition
but they benefit from the on paper stats you get with a tiny airframe and big engine

the three serious players, USA, Russia and China make their fighters with actual real world capability, which is why they are so much larger.

After the 1960s most South American countries rarely buys US weapons larger than a surplus howitzer or trucks, only European, and soviet/ex-soviet during the late cold war and 1990s. There're few exceptions like (helicopters) Colombia, Venezuela, (F-16) Argentina and Chile (F-16, SPG). Venezuela obviously isn't getting more weapons and Argentina it's hard to tell, but the second hand F-16 acquisition to an European country could be an isolated case.

Mainly because the US doesn't let them have the shiny new stuff, they always sell a gimped version or surplus from FMS.

People still remember the whole AMRAAM debacle with Chile or Argentina not managing to get Exocets due to bong pressure.

So European, Russian/Chinese or Brazilian is a "safer" choice.

>Mainly because the US doesn't let them have the shiny new stuff,
No, only when countries go full anti-US and political persecution the US will block (direct) sales.

>gimped
Chile has modern missiles...
> Argentina not managing to get Exocets due to bong pressure.
France simply didn't want to supply a problematic country during a war, especially when they had to transport them to another continent. France kept selling after the war ended even if Argentina was a political clusterfuck that always cancelled their acquisitions when they had to deposit the cash. That was completely unrelated to the England or the US.

>So European, Russian/Chinese or Brazilian is a "safer" choice.
Most SA countries acquired ex-Warsaw but non-Russian, like Czech, Polish, East German, etc. Russia never was a stable supplier and they always ripped off people with the spare parts.

The problem with the US is their insistence with trying to influence internal politics and the completely schizophrenic foreign policy in that region since the 1950s. The US constitution is meaningless outside American borders...

This is absolutely untrue. Peru got an absolutely gigantic amount of Soviet arms. Mexico also got a lot of Russian helicopters and vehicles, however they didn't really ask for them, Russia just defaulted on a debt to Mexico and gave them that instead of cash.

PeruANO here, they haven't signed anything yet but it's almost sure they will go for the Gripens. The purchase has been criticized because the Air Force said having combat experience was an essential requirement. I get why we're going with the Gripens though, they're cheaper and easier to operate, the canard makes it almost impossible to stall, they can take-off from a highway if needed, better sensor fusion, bigger range and the armament is just as good, plus the Swedes are open to a technology transfer. What worries me is that they're going to be made in Brazil and we will become dependent on them if we want to keep them flying. Colombia is also buying Gripens, the idea was having the entire region rely on them. Argentina probably suspected this so they chose to buy older F-16s from Denmark earlier this year despite being in the same trade bloc. It seems the region is rearming. Traditionally our security concerns come from Ecuador and Chile, Ecuador doesn't have any attack aircraft, but Chile has a lot of older F-16s. Ultimately, it's a numbers game and we're on a fixed budget. After the deed is done we're most likely buying K2 tanks from Korea.

That huge rearmament in the 70s was one of the main contributors to our default in 80s, the idea was to retake our lost southern province back from Chile, but while our dictator died after fucking up the economy for nothing, theirs fixed up their economy and in the late 90s they took back the lead

Would Peru have been better than Chile if they took back that region? IIRC, Chile bankrolled most of it's development via assets mined from there. Surprised me to learn that Peru has the second highest IQ in the region despite being not southern cone.

Not really, most of their cooper production takes place in a region called Antofagasta which was Bolivian, the region we wanted back (Tarapacรก) is north of it. Back in colonial times the silver came mostly from Bolivia as well, but back then it was called Alto Perรบ (literally High Peru). We may have been better if Bolivia stayed Alto Perรบ though (surely Bolivia would be). I wouldn't trust any self-purported measure of national IQ without knowing the sample or test, much less comparisons between them, PISA is probably a better proxy for it.

That was pretty much how they got Russian equipement in the 90's.

Brazil also got Mi-24 from a deal where they sold them meat. The first option was to buy Pantsirs, but they got helicopters instead that nobody wanted and got dumped into the Air-Force.

And when they actually managed to give it an useful role, the Russians fucked it by not sending them spare parts. So they retired their Mi-24 after just 12 years of operation.

Which sucks because they were actually pretty neat and had their usesfulness in the amazon.
