1: Lauded means 'praised' OP, I don't think you meant to use that word.
2: It's largely based in the perception that guns are an 'quick/easy' form of power, and that muscles and strength are an 'earned/hard' form of power. Therefore using the former to beat the latter is 'cheating'. It's the same cope as medieval knights demanding that crossbows be banned because they were a hard counter to trained and experienced men in (very expensive) armour just with fewer political and social implications.

"Fair fights" are only really a thing in settings like boxing rings and what not, as in it's an agreed upon standup fight and an actual sport with rules. Hell, sometimes that isn't even the case there.

Someone just comes at you as you're going about your life, you really just gotta do what you gotta do to survive and/or keep yourself out of trouble. Some drunk or high stranger comes at you for a fight, you can't count on what they're gonna do.
