>>63976519>I think the magnum crushGood luck finding them lol
I don’t want to shit on shotguns too much. They are very practical in the right context with the right load. But their capabilities get exaggerated.
>is on par with some african game rifles in terms of energyThe magnum crush is 3700 ft lbs. Which is a lot, but that’s basically a .300 win mag with a 200gr bullet. Also powerful and can kill anything on land, but not .4xx caliber powerful. Even a .375 H&H which is considered an “entry level” African big game caliber is 4700 ft lbs of energy.
>diameter (way thicker), and penetration. They are way thicker but that limits penetration. That may or may not be good depending on the application. I’m not going to say they won’t penetrate enough, especially on anything in North America, but rifle bullets penetrate deeper. Sectional density is huge for penetration, along with bullet construction/toughness, and slugs don’t have those.
>It's a lot of mass moving very fast.Agreed and they’ll kill any animal. But you can easily exceed the power, penetration, and range with not uncommon rifles like a .338 win mag. Sometimes the extra diameter is better for stopping charges, but again, its context dependent.
