Is there anything better as a "boom stick" than a shotgun with slugs? I was thinking of getting a 45-70 but now I'm thinking I can do bigger and better. I just don't know what's worth getting under a $1400 price tag.

Everyone should own at least one shotgun. Minimum is a Maverick 88. 590(S), SuperNova? Even a KSG(7)
You could get a 940 for that price, but you aren't swinging a 1301. You get get an A300 Patrol. You aren't getting an M3 or M4.

the only people who think slugs are good are people who dont actually shoot.

i want extremely low capacity, high recoil and long reloads cause its a slug.(sarcasm) i need the accuracy of a slug i cant use 00 buck like a normal person.
oh yeah i want to spend 1 dollar or more to shoot an inaccurate bullet thats only practical out to 100 yards max.
i dont want to spend half that on 5.56 thats easily good out to 300. a 100 yard shot with an ar is a joke.
you are going to buy a slug gun shoot like 50 slugs max most likely 1-3 boxes then swap over to not slugs and never buy slugs again.

Part of the benefit of shotgun is their versatility. If you don't want to use foster/deer slugs, upgrade to the big brenneke slugs. I think the magnum crush is on par with some african game rifles in terms of energy, diameter (way thicker), and penetration. It's a lot of mass moving very fast.

Nah, fuck off with that lurk moar bullshit. I've probably been here longer than you.

I just don't get this 'you need to buy a X gun just to tick off owning that category'. Shotguns are fine guns and a versatile choice if you want a single gun to handle HD, hunting and fun, but if you're not hunting birds or shooting skeet then there's no reason to buy a shotgun just for the sake of having a shotgun in your collection (I.e. sitting in your safe gathering dust).

>never actually use
My $200 shotgun is my most fired firearm in my collection, they are infinitely more fun for steel, melons, cans, and clays than any other gun. This is all opinion of course, I just don't find shooting my 92fs or ar at steel from an arbitrary distance as fun as blasting shit with a shotgun.

Also, I don't need to make up scenarios where a shotgun is superior (to what?) because a versatile smoothbore shotgun can fill a tick a lot of boxes. Home defense being one of them. After that it's all fluff, because a shotgun will kill an unarmored Jamal just as well as your AR will, and regardless of what courts or cops or juries think, Jamal will be just as dead and your family will be just as safe.

I would rather waterfowl hunt with an AR than with slugs in my goose gun. I would happily take an AR against bears. People drop elk with a single 77gr TMK. 30 of them will make Yogi’s day really bad.

Plus all you have to do is hit a bear with some bullet and they’ll fuck off and/or die. https://www.ammoland.com/2024/05/bear-defense-with-handguns-update-20-more-cases-98-effective/#

>I think the magnum crush
Good luck finding them lol

I don’t want to shit on shotguns too much. They are very practical in the right context with the right load. But their capabilities get exaggerated.
>is on par with some african game rifles in terms of energy
The magnum crush is 3700 ft lbs. Which is a lot, but that’s basically a .300 win mag with a 200gr bullet. Also powerful and can kill anything on land, but not .4xx caliber powerful. Even a .375 H&H which is considered an “entry level” African big game caliber is 4700 ft lbs of energy.
>diameter (way thicker), and penetration.
They are way thicker but that limits penetration. That may or may not be good depending on the application. I’m not going to say they won’t penetrate enough, especially on anything in North America, but rifle bullets penetrate deeper. Sectional density is huge for penetration, along with bullet construction/toughness, and slugs don’t have those.
>It's a lot of mass moving very fast.
Agreed and they’ll kill any animal. But you can easily exceed the power, penetration, and range with not uncommon rifles like a .338 win mag. Sometimes the extra diameter is better for stopping charges, but again, its context dependent.

Also my main point is that shotguns can go from baby recoil birdshot to top end slugs and everything in-between. 375 h&h is usually loaded to 4100-4300 ftlbs. Magnum crush and similar slugs are the equivalent of 300 win mag in energy, which is nothing to sneeze at, but have much larger diameter. In north america that basically means you can buy a pack of slugs instead of a brand new gun if you decide to visit big game areas.

Realistically a 9mm will defend against moose and bears, I really don't care much for animal defense larp. I'm more interested in humane kills on hunted game, and a 12 gauge with the right load can humanely take anything within 75 yards.

If you like big booms and recoil for fun then a 12ga is probably best in terms of boom per $$$. Maverick 88 is perfectly serviceable and will eat hard-recoiling loads all day long. People like to talk about the larger slug loads but honestly something like picrel will rock your shoulder harder.

There are some other pretty good contenders though. Modern commercial dangerous game rifles have little collector value, and like big magnum handguns a lot of people buy them, shoot half a box of ammo, NOPE out because of the recoil, and you can buy the gun used at a discount often with that half box of ammo thrown in. It's not hard to find a deal on a Rem 700 in .458 Win Mag. If you're a bit more patient you might score a deal on a .460 Weatherby.

Lightweight magnum hunting rifles have infamously high recoil but they don't really have the big boom so nobody shoots those for fun.

Depends if you actually shoot them inna desert or if they're just glorified wall hangers.

Grim, look on the bright side though. At least your not a Masshole or Jewseyian. Also why not at the very least get a fuddy five 1911 and some cheapo Ruger Ranch or Tikka bolt action in tree-ol-hate?

I have brought it out into the desert on a handful of occasions, but the main place where I would get powder/caps/ball from closed.

I have been looking to get a musket soon however, just as the founding fathers intended.

*PS, shooting the derringer with nods on was bright as shit

The tale of the 1862 flashbang:
>Be me
>innadesert
>nighttime
>Finishing pound of powder I have had for way too long
>measure what was left
>Don't remember exact amount, but if I shot them separately it would be pretty underpowered
>decide to load it up into 1 shot
>pour powder down
>ram ball down
>ball maybe has 1 inch of actual barrel
>before I set the cap on the nipple I turn off my flashlight and lower down my soviet nods
>put the cap on nipple
>hammer to full cock
>take aim
>fireball at least a foot wide emerges from barrel
>left tube goes completely white (yes I am left handed)
>on the right tube I can almost see the fireball extending another foot forward
>throw gun down, and turn on flashlight thinking it exploded
>look at my hand and count fingers
>they're all still there
>point flashlight to derringer that is now in the sand
>intact, minus the side of the wood having cracked
>small smokescreen down range
>left tube is extremely dim
>call it a night and go in tent

Took this photo once I got home. The left tube is to this day much dimmer than my right
