In fact from a military point of view it doesn't matter for a lot more ranges than that, because military rifle accuracy for a ground pounder firing a typical auto service rifle is like 3-5moa tops, and in terms of their actual in the field CEP it's probably going to be at least 8-12moa.

So even IRL, if whatever difference between sight and bore amounts to much less then this it's going to be lost in the noise. If you zero for 100yd and then aim the cross hairs right at somebody 30yd away and your goal is to get shots into a circle on their chest maybe 6" across (so 20moa at 30yd) the slight practical differences and "shooting high" will make no effective difference to accomplishing the goal.

Sure, most videogames simplify this and a billion other more meaningful things because they get in the way of the fun, but this one is pretty minor. If you're doing competition shooting and every fraction of a moa counts towards your score then sure, by all means sweat the details. If you're just mag dumping for fun trying to hit 5 gal buckets (which is basically what happens in video games) then whatever.

100yd/100m. Seriously. Changing zero at all is 99% of the time fuddlore memes from back before scopes with quality turrets and rtz were dirt cheap (along with a vast array of decent reticles of all kinds). The only point of a "zero" is to be close enough that you are getting something pretty reliably and predominately determined by the gun/ammo but far enough you can get it fairly precise. 100yd (or 100m if you're using mils) does that and makes all the math easier. The only times where it typically makes sense to do anything else for a rifle is certain kinds of hunting.

A complex tree reticle like you post there has nothing to do with zero distance, the point is to allow you to do some ranging and windage/drop compensation without touching your turrets. Some PRS people really enjoy that, others prefer ultra minimal reticles and full turret usage, some a hybrid. There isn't really one right answer. FWIW, the bigger limitation in general at longer ranges is the maximum physical travel distance a given scope is capable of. OP's upper image shows the line of aim and the line of the bullet's path are angled to approach each other, but won't intersect until about a dozen times as much distance, and the line of the bullet's path has zero curvature visible.
In such diagrams, there's often an implication that the scale is adjusted for demonstration purposes, and you're to assume the scale by context of what will demonstrate the assumed concept, so you might assume it should be scaled for a shot beyond the rifle's zero, so you can see the arc of the bullet intersecting with the line of aim twice, demonstrating the whole concept of zeroing. But no, it's accurately depicting a different concept, shooting a rifle in spitting distance, where it's correct for drop and zeroing to be negligible, and you're practically dealing with two straight parallel lines.
The distance between those lines can matter. Even if the target is big enough to overshadow that difference, there's the concern of bullets hitting something else on the way, pic related, so it is a concept worth illustrating.
But it's something that gamers and/or devs often don't want to deal with, so the bullets often come from your view instead. The same concept can get completely blown out of proportion in third person shooters, where the distance between the view and the muzzle goes from a few inches to a few meters.

I don’t shoot long range at all but idk if you’d zero for a long range. Probably more like minimal drop at your intended range without going over a certain amount of positive elevation, so you never have to aim low to make a hit.

As far as red dots or holos, if you aren’t using magnification, then your max range is like 200-300 yards, so really they ought to be zeroed for the MPBR on the smallest size target at that range. Example, for m855 (2950fps), this is a 46/218 yard zero on a 4” target. MPBR=251yd. There is a proper, mathematical way to go about zeroing one’s gun because 36yds might not be right for your barrel length/optic height over bore/sighting systems

If a diagram is showing a zeroed optic aiming for a target to the side of the gun, with the distance scaled down for demonstration purposes, making the arc more noticeable, then the entire gun should be angled somewhat upward to match the muzzle to the arc of the bullet's path, and the horizontal line coming out of the upward angled optic is what should be allowed to be visibly crooked in the diagram, because the zeroing adjustment angle is what's being exaggerated.

In reality, extreme angled zeroing involves special mounts that do angle the body of the optic to be visibly not parallel with the bore, since the adjustment range is limited, but the diagrams are usually illustrating the concept for basic sights that don't need that, not depicting mile+ rifle setups or grenade launchers.

It's fucking called height over bore you bunch of no guns faggots. Height over bore affects how your sight picture aligns with the bullet's actual impact point at various distances. Knowing your rifle's height over bore and practicing at different distances is essential for accurate shooting. Everything still answers to fucking physics. Gravity begins to affect the bullet the microsecond the it leaves the barrel. Where height over bore affects the strike point relative to where the optic reticle is depends on bullet weight and speed.. Faster and lighter bullets have less of a height over bore effect the shooter will need to compensate for. Now if you were shooting in microgravity, there will only be one distance that will yield a reticle hit. For real fun, check out when you shoot uphill and downhill... The hold will be the same up or down, because the arc intersection ends up being the same point at the same angle. ie hitting a target at 15° elevation or declination, your reticle will need the same hold. So a bunch of you need to stop posting. You don't understand physics, nor do you have experience with shooting.. Learn physics and practice shooting TOGETHER. They are the same subject.
