Just over that horizon is Russia's only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov. I am one wrong move away from the first shootout between two flat-tops since World War II. One flinch from touching off World War III. And you're asking me to fly you directly into the eye of the storm?

Maybe back in the day yeah, with all those old cold war movies, books about Russian military and commie fanboys who spam soviet anthem in chat lobbies to rape people ears with, showing Russia as this great danger to the western world that would crush all of Europe and invade America at the same time

Yet after the start of the Ukraine war, the entire reputation of Russian military been shattered with so many imagines and videos of showing their incompetence that it's almost impossible for Hollywood or the gaming industry to portray them as a threat

I will never understand why /k/ommandos are so fucking proud of their complete and utter refusal to consider the USSR and contemporary Russia as 2 separate entities with completely different resources (human and else), economic systems, political systems and contexts. That's just fucking dumb. Russia is half of the USSR demographically, is a state-controlled capitalist system, with an industry that has a 20-year windup from being dismantled and sold away in the 1990's and early 2000's. Russia 30 years ago was essentially Congo but colder, and stagnated as such until the mid 2000's. It shouldn't be surprising that 20 years later they'd still suck. They're only pretending not to because the memory of better, soviet times still lives in the mind of many middle-class russians, and if any politician stops pretending and start acknowledging what happened between 1991 and 2005 every one of those people will ask for their head, because they want to forget and until Putin started the war it worked pretty well, but they can't ask for his head because then they'd themselves be acknowledging that something is too wrong to ignore.

TLDR : /k/ommandos spew retarded bullshit when they stray away from guns or gun-related topics, Russia isn't the USSR but is shellshocked.

It's simple if you read some military history.

The USSR really was an unstoppable monster in the 1950s-1960s because short range tank rushes were the meta of the time and it was perfectly suited to producing them.

The US started up the microchip tech ladder in a perfect mix of post-WW2 government investment in R&D, private innovation (American companies did their own R&D funding back then), and cultural advantages (good quality control is critical for chip foundries). It took about 30 years to culminate but it was producing results by 1980 and complete by the mid 1990s; at that point the USSR's industrial mass warfare approach was over.

Why does this matter?

Because the boomers grew up during the development of the latter but their minds were shaped by the period of the former.

And now today we're in the phase where the perfected conventional warfare of the 1980s is probably obsolete and the full potential of automated sensor-flooded space-supported warfare is being reified.

I understand in terms of raw numbers, soviets parked 25,000 tanks in and had millions of men in eastern Europe, they could ramp up production of armaments due to centralised planned economy, still there are examples such as the Mig-25 which was never really a threat but was hyped as such, nothing in soviet air superiority fleet could match up to what the US flew, nothing could match to what the US floated, now a similar rhetoric is being spewed about china

Because they're not.

Oh yeah, all the pieces fell off and they use money and pretend to have elections but that's about it.
For five minutes in the 90s, you're right, they were legitimately different entities but that Russia died in a basement from dedovshchina inflicted by the KGB who had faked their death, changed their name to FSB and continued with their old tricks.
Now, it's back to business and the KGB-tail is wagging the politburo-dog, oops, I mean the KGB-tail is wagging the Duma-dog of course.

Because they could not run in both the armament's race and the peace race. Unlike capitalism, they had to choose between producing missiles and washing machines. >Multiple commentators have noted that the grocery store and its manager had a major impact on Yeltsin's political views, with an aide who had been present with him during the trip saying that "the last vestige of Bolshevism collapsed inside" of him following the his meeting with that young man.

Let's not fucking forget that line about how the black tech guy made a 5-dimensional pleasure stick ment to "trap" this AI model with, who apparently does not want to copy itself either, and that the Brit bong immediately recognized it as a 5-dimensional please stick.

It felt like an 80-year old who is still impressed by the tech of microwave ovens and has no grasp of the average tech present in a modern remote control came up with that tech babble bull.

Also, the SA bunker thing was some of the dumbest shit I have ever seen on the big screen, including the confrontation.

the fact that they did not immediately smash the 5-dimensional pleasure stick was also such a dumb direction.

The writing in that film was horrendous.

They never needed a single sequel to mission impossible, and the only worse film in the series was the third one.

Given that optical storage is cutting edge technology, it's not unreasonable that any serious hacker would recognise it because they've watched the tech demo videos about it and possibly attempted to get their hands on one.

The 5D is a marketing term, the D really stands for Degrees of Freedom, not Dimensions.
They mean that the encoded bits can be modulated not only in XYZ but also size and orientation, like I said, marketing wank.

not at all. if someone can spam a ton of missiles in your direction, they're a serious threat and you have a chance of losing or not coming off any better.

this has been naval warfare 101 ever since guided missiles became a thing, which is why large fleet engagements usually won't happen anymore.

we're talking about a fictional show here, so it's best to assume everything is working optimally. though you can replace kuz with another kirov and the effect will be the same.

missile spam sucks and stuff always leaks through if there's enough of it, and single hits are enough to take even a ddg out of the fight.

A respectable soldier of fortune, not a war criminal. It's even better considering that he was Polish and Poland at the time was a communist country.
Quite an interesting guy, actually. His father was in FFL and died during the Warsaw Uprising. The son saw how terrible communism was first-hand and how badly it treated Polish resistance fighters, so he joined the local anti-communist resistance. Soviets found out so he had to escape hiding under a train carriage for 400 miles to Berlin where he jumped border to the Western sector and joined the US Army as a paratrooper. He was angry that they stationed him in Germany because he hated Germans for WW2 and also he got bored because nothing was happening so he jumped on a plane to Congo to fight communists there and after that was over he went to Yemen and blew up a Soviet embassy for shits and giggles. He lived long enough to die in Poland free of communism.
