F-16 stick

I paid some huge cash to fly for a little bit in a F-16, of course there was a flight instructor with me.

What I don't get is how people manage to control the airplane with that dumbass stick. It doesn't move at all.

It is like playing games on a touchscreen, without any buttons, you have 0 feedback if you are really pressing anything.

Is this an export dumbdown version and the real american one is good? Or is the american version crap like this too?

No, thatโ€™s how the stick was designed. It only has minimal movement so that itโ€™s easier to operate under high gโ€™s. It senses the amount of force you are applying to it.

I imagine that this fly-by-wite sidestick design with minimal movement would be WAY easier to control than a mechanical center stick when maneuvering.

Every F-16 pilot I've listened to says it's great once you get used to it.

The original F-16 stick literally didn't move at all, it was force sensitive. They found pilots were wrecking their arms trying to manhandle the thing, so they added a tiny bit of movement to give the pilot some feedback.

Your body is the feedback you goober. You're not supposed to pilot it, you're supposed to fly it! It was designed to be as light of a stick as possible, you use your body to fly it.

let me guess OP is some russian trying to convince brownoids that struggling with an antique flight control system is actually much better for pilots than western fly-by-wire

nice larp, if you really sat in F-16 you'd know the stick does move (a bit)

Unlike (older) helicopters and aircraft, the F-16 is fly-by-wire. No force is needed to manipulate the stick, as you aren't supposed to be focused on the stick anyhow. It only serves as a distraction if the stick both moves and exerts force on your body, instead, pilots focus on their surroundings and the movement of the stick becomes second nature, such as typing on a keyboard or riding a bike.

This also allows pilots to focus on their priority (killing).

Because many variants of the F-15 lack FBW. Only some of the newest versions have it. Digital control systems are like comparing a track-ball mouse to an optical mouse. Both have nuances, but generally FBW is more desirable for modern or otherwise unstable aircraft.

Did he have a boner? I can't imagine flying an F-16 without a tactical boner.

It's about reaction time reduction to hard inputs. It takes less time for the fly by wire system to register a hard maneuver input in that barely moving force sensing system than to throw around a regular stick. In regular inputs and flying, you just need to pay attention to what you are seeing as the pilot to what you are inputting into the controls. What you see happening is your feedback. So no death gripping the stick, hand on the control but not death gripping. In hard maneuvers and under stress you'll grab tighter, but you learn not to death grip even then. Again, the aircrafts reaction is the feedback. And as you may have guessed, I'm a rated pilot and have flown PIC in several different aircraft, some of them very high performance. Yes, a few fighters. And no, fly by wire doesn't make sense in all fighters. Some need that feedback you are concerned about for a specific reason, like the A-10 or any other CAS specific fighter. When close to the ground mostly and operationally, the feedback is critical in feeling specific effects found near the ground attempting certain operations. But the F-16 doesn't operate in that environment mostly. Sure, you may be hugging dirt, but not like an A-10 is.

Nah, Win7 let you keep delaying it infinitely IIRC with a box asking how long (something like 15 min/30 min/1hr/2hr?). Also had the ability to disable updates IIRC even if you already had one downloaded and ready to go. Great os; I miss it.
