It's the standard meme cycle:
1-someone thinks how do we distinguish the frontline fighters from the supply clerks when everyone is in a uniform and called a soldier? uh call them warfighters
2-it catches on with normies
3-now the butthurt supply clerks are overhearing and using it to describe themselves, so the original meaning is ruined
4-the meme is a decade+ old and now people who know nothing about the original phases 1-3 start using it unironically because they grew up hearing step 3, completing the slopification cycle
soon we'll be at step 1 again. probably we already are, actual soldiers have a specific word for the key combat arms types and as normies we're waiting for it to spread into our awareness.
