As the other Anon said: all Yugo M1924s were originally in 8x57IS. What country are you in? In some Euro countries there were time periods when their laws forbid civilian ownership of firearms chambered in "military" cartridges so many milsurps would be re-chambered into something similar but just different enough to escape these regulations e.g. reaming 8x57mm Mauser rifles out to 8x60mm.

greets, k
had a split case on one of my berthiers.
fired 4 rounds no problem, 5th cracked, smoked a bit.
its an older ppu factory round.
the rifle has a balle N chamber, so its a generous sized chamber.
like on all my berthiers the brass comes out a bit bulged, but this is the first split case.
rifle is all numbers matching and proof shot (german proof, 15 yrs. ago).

is it true that split cases happen in berthiers due to oversized chambers, esp. with ppu ammo (they load to tight icp dimensions, sometimes hard or little annealed brass)?
armorer says he doesnt really know, dont fire too much out of it.
headspace seems ok.
chamber no visible rust pits or other damages.
thoughts, /k/, has someone experienced this too?

If it's a repeat issue then there's cause for concern, but unless it keeps occurring I wouldn't worry about it. You might do a chamber cast, measure the resulting dimensions and compare them to the ideal chamber specification.

There's a single receiver on GB rn, though it's $1k for just the receiver. The few complete rifles I have seen pop up over the years usually run at least $10k or more. Ironically, I've seen more 41Ms in person (2) than 41Ws(1) but one was heavily sporterized and the other had a broken stock and was missing parts. It's rather hard to find original, untouched German semi autos, most either have issues with their stocks (sanded, bleached, cleaned, etc.) or are sporterized.

That's about right. I remember seeing an intact but mismatched 41M back in 2023 that sold for around $13k. Only 15,000 or so 41Ms were made throughout 1941-1942 and quite a few went east where they got lost in combat against the Russians.

>Other than maybe broken furniture, what drives people to do this? I get that bolt actions used to flow like water but sporterizing a G41 of either variety doesn't sound practical, cheap, or effective in any way.
I think it's a combination of impulsiveness and ignorance. There was hardly any literature or information out regarding the 41s and their operating mechanism which spans the whole length of the barrel. So as soon as Bubba makes that first cut, he's committed to making it a decent sporter, even if the recuperator and working parts are exposed now. I know G41s are not the lightest rifles but there's not much you can even remove on them.

taking apart & using ppu factory ammo as reloading components and anneal the brass well would be the final solution.
for testing i bought some newly produced ppu lebel ammo, the cases have now that ring around the primer the older ppu doesnt have, lets see if this brass holds better. im gonna fire some of the old ppu out of my other berthiers to see if the cases split up.

if the new ppu brass does not work well, im gonna shoot the factory ammo out of my berthiers with chambers that dont split the cases, and reload it.
keeping track of brass sized to the guns chamber is a good idea.

thx for the input lads!

Scharfeschutze G/K43s were all equipped with ZF4 scopes and accompanying mounts though more scopes than mounts were made during the war, leading to repro mounts being made since the post war era. Original mounts can easily run up to $2k alone and are usually numbered to the rifle, you'll need some pics of the mount to verify it. Scopes were also reproduced as well and you'll need to inspect the receiver like >>64035200 said because G43s are quite notoriously overgassed. And double check the stock, sometimes stocks were "cleaned" to give them a more blonde look.

Quite a few repros bear fake serial numbers so make sure you get some detailed pics of the mount. Scopes were numbered to their own production numbers so scope numbers matching the rifle should set off a red flag.

More loosely applied you can include Old West guns like Winchester 1873s and Colt SAAs, though you would have to only accept genuine weapons in that case.

How do I clean out corrosive ammo from my mauser?
I feel like i'm not doing it right cause a day or so after I'm done shooting It looks like rust is showing up
I've got Kroil, Tri Max CLP, and Hoppes lubricating gun oil in my cleaning kit and I've heard thats enough so maybe i'm not doing something right
My usual process is pour a ketchup bottle (like the ones you get at diner's) worth of hot water down the barrel, dry patch to get the water, some oil patches, push a bronze brush down a few times to free up what ever survived, repeat the oil patch step and then I'm usually done but idk if thats enough or not.
Also out of curiosity can you just shoot like 20 rounds of clean ammo to get the salts out of the barrel cause I've done that once on a gun with a rusty bore and it worked

Everything else about the gun appears fine (no cracking on the bolt housing or bending at the receiver) besides a few gouges in the wood

Sounds like you do basically the same as I do after shooting corrosive. But my last step is just spraying the crap out of the bore, bolt, and receiver area with any kind of oil on hand (WD-40, PB-50, Remoil, etc.). Then let the barrel stop dripping, and lightly wipe off the excess on the bolt. Never had a corrosive ammo rust related problem doing it that way, as long as the gun isn't stored in a super humid location.
And yeah I think I once discovered you can shoot non corrosive ammo to "clean" a gun too. But as an autist, I start getting anxiety thinking of how lots of those salts are simply "buried" under a layer of carbon. Yeah maybe it will look clean but give it a little more time to absorb moisture from the air, and it might be an issue in the future. Not worth the anxiety IMO.

Are you sure it's rust and not copper fouling? Do you live in a very humid climate? I usually pour water through the bore from chamber to muzzle, then I make some moose milk and put the muzzle down in it, put a patch through a loop jag on a rod down the muzzle into the moose milk and pull the patch back up to the chamber. This has the effect of pulling the cleaning solution along up the bore until you break the vacuum seal when the patch reaches the chamber, then it all runs back down out the muzzle. Repeat a few times with clean patches, then clean as normal.

If it had a high "hump" receiver bridge for the clip, like mine, then it was a Model 1903 carbine, made by Mauser Oberndorf between 1904 and 1909. Apparently they made 175,000, and a chunk of that total were originally carbines. But I'm sure some were converted to cabines during their 8mm update & refurb in the 1930's. Some say they're among the smoothest Mauser action out there, and I agree- despite being parts mixed from refurb & storage, they are quite smooth.

It has a 2 grove 1903 barrel, does that work better with heavier bullets or something? I heard the standard bullet weight for 1903s was 150 gr so I was expecting that to be best. Stocks would also have been numbered to the rifles externally along with the bolt carrier, the magazine, the trigger guard, the muzzle cone, the action cover, the front sight base, and the components of the bolt group which was conveniently left out of the pics on this one.
