bowie knife from the civil war
is this the peak of the fighting knife?

As with any weapon, depends on use case.
>Meeting a dude face to face with just knives?
Yeah. It's basically a small Messer.
>Taking out sentries, dispatching an enemy in plate, concealed protection?
No.
Anonymous No.63998180 [Report]
Sure. Bowie knives were made in so many sizes and shapes that you would be hard pressed to not find one perfect for whatever type of fighting you want.

Fun fact, the Bowie knife as we know of today is just the most commercially successful version that came out after Jim Bowie's death. Bowie had a shitload of knives over the course of his life, and it's uncertain what the "actual" knife looked like. It was probably just a big ass butcher knife.
Anonymous No.63998222 [Report]

Is that a fact?

At least the insane variety of what is being sold as "Bowie" knives is entirely historically accurate.

These folding hunting knives were identified as "Arkansas Toothpicks" by some contemporary sources.

What is even the point of having that fold?

So bowie knife literally means "a knife pattern owned and used by James Bowie?"

But so were spear point knives occasionally.

Bitch that one is a knife only by technicality. That's a fucking shortsword.
Anonymous No.63998645 [Report] >>63998664

Technically the term in practice means larger than usual and single edged AND at least vaguely similar to any knife in his collection that matches those previous criteria.

Most heavy private purchases like those knives and revolvers were discarded quickly by infantry on the march because of weight. You have no hope against someoen with a fixed bayonet with one anyway. Interestinng note, the men taking those photographs had a box of props for the people being photographed to pick from.

Less useful than a hatchette. There were quite a lot of Frecnh briqueets used by the CSA though, they were harvested from waterloo by the prussians and in the 1860s wound up beinng sold off to teh CSA. I have a CSA marked one. So you have something that made have gone with Napoleon to Italy or Russian and was at waterloo also being at Bull run.

They were *not* however primarily combat weapons at all but camp tools.

I always thought bowie knives needed to have a trailing point.
Anonymous No.63998805 [Report] >>63998819

And a hatchet is less useful that an axe. Have a sword for defense and an axe as a tool. Leave the hatchet at home.

Bought the Midway Cold Steel SRK/Trail axe combo and the slightly shorter haft has no negatives so far. I've used it to split, dig and never thought I needed more shaft. If anything it is better.
I'm not trying to split 2'+ diameter logs or fell a tree, but at that point I would use a maul/wedge + sledge and a double bit, respectively.
The Spetznaz shovel is also legit. Bought as a lark on reviews. Useful as Hell.

I like the metal sheaths with the clip or stud that some bowie knives had. Having the knife just stuck in your belt or waistband is peak esthetics.

Yes the Bowie knife is the ultimate fighting knife from purely a martial perspective. Not the best utility knife, survival knife, sentry removal knife, bayonet, etc. but the best fighting knife.

Pretty much.
Pretending every style of blade is heck'n special and unique or le ultimate weapon is pretty gay.
OP's pic related is essentially a cross between a cutlass and a machete. Most of the time they were used as the latter.
There's nothing new under the sun when it comes to bladed weapons besides mall ninja shit like pic related that serves no real purpose.

I just read about Bowie's life and why are there no movies or novels about his endeavours? He was chaos incarnate, fighting here and there for different things. In-between, a real estate mogul. What a guy, I love him

I was buying a everyday pocket knife some months and saw a bowie for sale on the same site and it somehow slipped into my cart, the amount of silly childish joy I get from just waving this thing around made it worth every penny
every boy needs to wave a comically large knife around at some point in their life

Dagger>Bowie (for fighting)
Clipped point is for combining thrusting and cutting/chopping potential, which is what you need for a working knife that can double as a weapon, like a bowie knife. Dagger blade is for pure fighting.
