they aren't as common in Europe (or as good looking at you F1). Plus renting a car isn't necessarily your best transport option in Europe.
but you can save a lot of money staying in those if you are already renting a car.
me and my brother did a month long road trip trough the US on a little over 4k euro getting a cheap flight, cheap car, never sleeping in a city proper and buying our own food at a wallmart or other big box store.
a final tip for any americans with kids that want to visit Europe. There's a well developed market for rental holiday homes. Depending on the season, location ect you can get one for 500 euro a week. Now try to find two, two bed rooms for that kind of money.
Try to find one close ish to one or more cities you want to go to (northern Italy and the low countries come to mind) rent one for a week and then rent a car or use public transport to get to them.
not only will you save on lodging but you can also cook, pack lunches, do laundry ect. all great ways to cut down costs.
it also helps to keep the kids from acting up by letting them have separate rooms, a proper sit down dinner (or just take away) ect.
because nothing sucks more on your expensive trip than kids acting up and ruining things for you.
