>The Attack on Pearl Harbor goes perfectly
>2 aircraft carriers sunk, dozens of American ships utterly destroyed or damaged beyond repair, thousands of sailors dead, the harbor rendered completely inoperable
Assuming the best possible luck on the part of the Japanese, does this actually affect the war?

The US had 250 a-bombs by that point so Japan gets vaporized

Japan has collapsed by then after exhausting itself in China and being invaded by the USSR

no because the US will still produce enough Fletchers to blot out the sun and Japan never develops the concept of unrestricted submarine warfare
Midway happens slightly later with the US carriers being Saratoga, Ranger, Wasp and Hornet with the same outcome

Maybe the war ends in '47 instead of '45. Japan probably gets even more devastated by air attack (including nuclear) than it did IRL. If supply of military aid to the UK and USSR is also diminished/delayed because of the more precarious American position the war in Europe might drag on long enough for Germany to get nuked as well. The resource disparity between the Allies and the Axis powers is just insurmountable once America enters the war.

FDR and Churchill piss shit and cum together and the Bongs full deploy to the east while the US holds down the Atlantic. The Pacific becomes largely the British Empire holding the line while waiting for the US to start going brrr.

Any delays to the war has allied powers in a much stronger position going in. So instead of the Pacific taking 4 years it'll likely be settled in 2 assuming the nuclear bomb hasn't been invented by then which even if the US hadn't fucked around with it then there's a good chance the UK would have had one cause contrary to popular belief, Bongs weren't actually that far off and much further along than any of the Axis powers ever were.

This, nothing short of the United States collapsing into civil war like Russia did in 1917 was going to save the Axis Powers, even then their chances of prevailing would be less than ideal because the USSR is still around and has enough manpower and natural resources than Germany, Italy, and Japan put together (even if monumentally misused).

Yes and no. The radar picked up the planes but they thought the zeroes were a flight of b17s due to be coming in around that time. Also the dude in charge of the station got fuck all for training and familiarity.

This. Even if Japan sunk the carriers, ww2 America was the height of American Exceptionalism. The hamburgers are inevitable, Louis. They insist upon themselves.

It’d certainly be interesting to see. My biggest question is, while carriers are and were obviously the future of naval power, the USN was still being obstinate about it during the interwar period. So the question is, without them being able to escape Pearl and thus being the largest assets left in the pacific, would the USN focus on carriers as it did historically, or would they double down on battleships?
Or in other words, would a completely successful Pearl Harbor attack eventually result in the USN finishing the full run of six Iowas plus five (or more!) Montanas?

Either way, in a situation where the war goes on until ‘47, the Japanese are going to have to deal with a LOT of the cool shit that the US was cooking but canceled due to the end of the war. Poor little Zero bastards.
