>traditional CIWS is too expensive
>okay then, miniature dollar tree CIWS vs drones

You're telling me Ukraine can't use a mounted machinegun and hook it up to some AI camera software with thermals to counter drones? What's actually stopping video-related from being used right now on the battlefield? In WW2, they used the same shit for airborne threats except it was against planes and the targeting software was the gunner and not AI.

It IS feasible.

that shit only works at close distance and in a controlled environment.
putting that on a drone flying in a heavy EW environment is basically useless.

I got the impression that battlefield drones aren't too much of a problem for Ukraine. Those big drones that are hitting Ukrainian cities are probably too high/fast/low to be shot by gun AA. Russia is incapable of doing something like slaving a gun to a fire control computer. And let's face it, Ukraine is the same way. Like the most innovative thing Ukraine has done the entire war is insurgent-tier things like slapping RPGs onto FPV drones, or slapping explosives onto a radio controlled boat and calling it a sea drone.

Ukraine have been developing and using RWS/Sentry turrets since 2015-2017 retard. They can't make enough and they can't way while they're being bombed every day.

I'm telling you you're fucking around with cheap chinkshit when western tech has addressed this years ago. Link related predictively compensates for maneuvering drones up to 5Gs btw.

It's the same slop every time. Jobless brown niggers see a new toy and think it's invincible because they're not educated, experienced, or simply mentally independent enough to do 1 minute of research.

why are they so insecure that xi looks like a chubby old man? there's plenty of chubby old men so it's very strange that he obsessively spams that image everywhere as if it will magically stop his favourite dictator from being a chubby old man.

What problem are you solving, lack of manpower? Ukraine can put up a flyer saying they'll contractually promise a behind-the-frontlines city defense job and get 10 volunteers for every gun. If you gave Ukraine such systems on a platter they would man them anyway and say "Yuri, you sit behind this AI gun and make sure it's not shooting at birds or friendlies, Boris will clear jams and replenish the ammo".
But if you went all-in on producing totally autonomous systems you could eventually saturate your territory with a completely absurd number of automatic machine guns, one for every building in Ukraine, right? Sure, at which point Russia starts flying their drones a mile high and dive bombing instead of coming in low and slow.
That makes them easy prey for your long-range AA like patriot missiles except fuck you don't have nearly enough of those, which was your real problem this whole time. (To some extent that's exactly what we've been seeing.)

Listen man on some level I agree with you on that and that the geopolitics of at least the first half of the 21st century will be driven by resentment and ego and that these are exploitable weaknesses. But they still have an absurd share of global manufacturing. Meanwhile:

OP's whole point is that it's not impressive.
It would seem that every vehicle on the field should be mounting an automatic anti-drone hard kill turret with an effective range of 50+ meters, but they're not, and that's surprising.

>Ukraine have been developing and using RWS/Sentry turrets since 2015-2017 retard
AFAIK even earlier, it's just that they finally got some financing after 2014 for obvious reasons, and before that they had to try and market them abroad as upgrade options for users of soviet shitboxes, such as RWS for BTRs and BMPs.

>putting that on a drone flying in a heavy EW environment is basically useless.
It doesn't need to be on the drone, you need it on your AFV or on its own skid in a semi-fixed position firing at drones.
>>64013268
>What problem are you solving, lack of manpower?
Point-defense and shooting down cheap drones with PG7-V warheads and the like. Having these near the front line will have them firing on both radio & fiber optic drone. Make them targets for said drones and hopefully the majority of the time function as semi-autonomous units that can shoot down drones before they do any damage.
>>64010406 (OP)
It is, but somehow we have not seen ANY IRST type gun systems used in this role despite the overabundance and supposed next-gen gamechanging supercharged influence of FPOV drones (with fiberoptic) cables.
There could be a whole host of reasons but point defense turrets would make a lot of sense seeing both sides talk how they're harassing eachother with FPOV drones up to 5 km beyond the line of contact constantly.

My friend you are underestimating the issues of doing anti-drone protection.

The issue isn't just manpower, although even that is a factor once you stop thinking about it as a video game. Any mobile fire group which is basically a pickup truck with a machine gun needs a ton of people involved: people can't and don't work 24/7, so you need people in shifts, the teams need drivers, gun operator, maybe an additional guy with a stinger (for those situations where the machine gun can't handle shit), people doing comms, people doing observations, people doing truck and gun maintenance, people doing logistics for them, etc. For every single fire team, which can't protect that much given the size of Ukraine. Good luck scaling that by 10,000x when you actually need to do other military stuff in parallel.

And all that is even before we start worrying about thing like efficiency, i.e. can the mobile fire team actually find and shoot down the drone. Sure, they often do, but shooting down shit manually with a machine gun is orders of magnitude more difficult vs using something like a Gepard. Because radars, because fire control systems, because automated targeting and target tracking, all that shit. So, any way to bolt on a system which would find the drone by visual signal and target it automatically would move the needle tremendously.

They don't just need it to be feasible, they also need it to work.
