>shouldnt there be supermachine guns?
Those are autocannons and high rpm rotary guns.

An anon the other day coined the category of “super sub machine guns”. These are guns like the m2 carbine chambered in high energy straight-walled cartridges.

>straight-walled can’t be high energy

Are you retarded? High energy has to do with propellant volume, not caliber. Pick any cartridge you’d consider to be high energy and neck it up to where it’s straight walled. Voila, you’ve created a high energy straight wall cartridge. 50AE, any fuckhuge revolver magnum cartridge, 350/400 legend, 577 tyrannosaur (or whatever it’s called), etc.

You’re still stuck on small arms, we’re talking about autocannon ammunition. Like the Bofors 40mm round.

Straight walled like a rimmed revolver cartridge; cylindrical? Or straight walled like not a bottleneck cartridge?

AFAIK modern tank cases are straight-walled but they're also semi-combustible so they only have to eject the base.

Not bottlenecked. A slight case taper to aid in extraction is still considered straight walled.

Would it be possible to scale up the M60 to shoot the old 8-inch brass cased shells the USN used to used?

That is a very homosexual system for mounting accessories, called KeyMod. That must be why it failed against m-lok.

The older I get the less compelled I am to call guns anything other than a "gun". It's not a smg, lmg, carbean, dmr, xmr, whatever. it's a 'gun'.

In days past, guns and especially calibres were sufficiently limited to neatly fit them into categories. Now it's intermediates upon intermediates, to the point where "gun" becomes a continuum of technical possibilities.

On this note, I've thought for ages that we need a proper term for "SMG-style" semiautos. PCC doesn't really work since it doesn't include "pistols" and does include guns like the Ruger PC, Henry Homesteader, etc. that aren't SMG-like.

What about a Ultramachine gun i.e Ultralightmachinegun? In that case you are looking for the LAD.
