An anon the other day coined the category of “super sub machine guns”. These are guns like the m2 carbine chambered in high energy straight-walled cartridges.
Are you retarded? High energy has to do with propellant volume, not caliber. Pick any cartridge you’d consider to be high energy and neck it up to where it’s straight walled. Voila, you’ve created a high energy straight wall cartridge. 50AE, any fuckhuge revolver magnum cartridge, 350/400 legend, 577 tyrannosaur (or whatever it’s called), etc.

In days past, guns and especially calibres were sufficiently limited to neatly fit them into categories. Now it's intermediates upon intermediates, to the point where "gun" becomes a continuum of technical possibilities.

after seeing all the different cartridges, the legal names, the historical names, technical names, it all starts to just blur
these days most people don't even know what an autorifle is

On this note, I've thought for ages that we need a proper term for "SMG-style" semiautos. PCC doesn't really work since it doesn't include "pistols" and does include guns like the Ruger PC, Henry Homesteader, etc. that aren't SMG-like.
