I am there on the Cambodian side of the border

About a month or so ago a Cambodian border guard for shot by the Thais for allegedly walking across the demarcation line. Cambodia retaliated by stopping buying Thai products and a bunch of other minor thing like stopping people going into Thailand by land border and cutting the internet cable going into Thailand.

A Thai soldier at the border 2 days ago stepped on a old Soviet landmine from the 70s/80s Khmer rouge period but the Thais claim the Cambodians moved them at night on a patrol path, the Cambodians say they didn't. Nonetheless the Thais feel confident that the Cambodians (which should not even have those anti personel mines in stock) have placed the mines on the path and recalled the ambassador last night.

This morning the Thais did a show of force by moving a large force to their version of the disputed border.

Cambodians sent some guys to tell them to go back. They shouted at each other. Someone shot a few rounds and they split away but since the Thais didn't stop moving forward the cambodian decided (very debatable decision) to fire a grad launcher towards the Thai forces. Apparently it was not really aimed a them but near them to scare them off and make them go back.

But the grad aim is awful so...

Still one Thai soldier guy died and possibly a random Thai civilian that for some reason was still in the area.

Than the Thais tried to bomb the grad and blow up the access road to the temple from the Cambodian side with F-16 to unknown success.

The Cambodians now are using some old artillery.

Still more show than substance to be frank.

The Thais keep claiming that temple even if the ICJ already ruled in Cambodia favor.

And it's a very small area, remote and rather worthless. Not really worth fighting over it. Should just make it a duty free no man's land type of location while the Thai hopefully will one day recognized the 2 international court rulings

About the landmine it was an old USSR landmine from the Khmer rouge period.

The whole border has been mined since the 60s. That model of mine has not been in production for decades and the Cambodians got rid of all their anti personel mines when they signed the treaty in the 90s under US and UN supervision when.rhe country was run by the UN temporary government.

So the only USSR anti personel mines that Cambodia would have accetto would be from old mines that Cambodia has dug out in recent years.

So for the Thai claiming that they were new mines purposefully planted for them is kind of silly since the whole area is heavily mines already.

Most likely with the increase of troops at the border someone fucked up and took a wrong turn during patrol going over some old mines.

Also during the monsoon season it flood heavily turning everything into mud and mines move over time.

It gives the name to a Cambodian province which is quite something.

Mostly the Cambodians accepted to let the matter go to the international court of justice twice and they won both times so they are definitely in the right about it but the Thais are still very annoyed at the Cambodians to have taken it back from them by what the Thai considered cheating.

Back in the 1800s Cambodia was losing a war against Thailand and Thailand took both this temple and the more famous angkor temple. The Cambodian King discussed with the French to be a protectorate in exchange for a French military expedition. The french effectively steamrolled the Thais and took back the temples for cambodia. The Thais tried to take them again during WW2 by siding with the Japanese and invading cambodia while France was too busy surrendering to the German mustachioed painter.
However as WW2 ended with a Japanese loss the Thais backpedaled at light speed and gave everything back to France (but they still kept the monument in Bangkok of the "victory over France" lol) so they were not taken to the losing table of the Axis power at war's end even if the Soviets wanted them to be broken up for some reason. But they always wanted it.

Since then they took the temple again when cambodia was too busy infighting the Khmer rouge.

Than Cambodia complained with the ICJ and won twice. with UN pressure and a few skirmishes at the border we come to today with the temple effectively being still in no man's land because the Thai still say that the France maps are to be deemed null.

The only objective is to prevent the Thais form stealing the temple that the international court of justice awarded to Cambodia already.

I must say that the Grad shooting was rather imprecise and the 7/11 near the military base was obviously not a a target even if a missile fell nearby.

About the alleged "hospital" we have videos from the Thai side that is not an hospital but a part of a military base filled by soldiers in full gear. Also the missile didn't hit it and just fell in the background.

The military base has a medical unit. That is the alleged hospital.


About the youth being hit by shrapnel and killed in the area I have no details but there are a number of small shops around the base from which Thailand launched it's attacks last night so sadly he might have been there.

However the grad firing was the only retaliation that Cambodia could do to yesterday night unwarranted Thai air strikes.

Now it is confirmed that Thailand retaliated from the alleged mine incident using F-16 airstrikes (that was frankly bollocks since it was just a single guy stepping on a Soviet landmine from the 70s on a border full of mines since the cold war).

Literally dozens of sources talk about how prevalent PMN-2 mines are SPECIFICALLY near the Thai border.

They were used by the Vietnamese occupation government while the Khmer rouge had a similar version. Back then the Khmer rouge often ran into Thailand forests to find sanctuary and than attacked again the Vietnamese occupation government after infiltrating back in. (This after the Khmer rouge lost the majority of the territory)

That's probably part of it to an extent. Though this IS a weapons board.
