Shotgun General. Discuss all things shotgun.
(First time starting a thread, so PLZ be nice ^^)

To start things off, I need recommendations for a light switch to mount on the left side of the VOA pump for the Mossberg 590. The width is about 0.6" wide and sort of angled. Should I go for a flat or angled/raised switch?

Rifled (Brenneke and Foster) slugs are basically fine through any choke. Sabot slugs are for rifled barrels, though I expect they'd shoot safely through a choked barrel, but with nothing to stabilize they'd perform like shit. The biggest safety factors for shotguns are don't mix up your 12ga with 20ga, and don't shoot old (pre-WWI) guns with modern loads.

This depends on the slug, not the gun. As others have said most slugs are totally safe to fire through chokes. There are a handful that are not, like some of the steel Euro slugs. Just read the box, it will say if the slug is not safe for chokes.
Anonymous No.64063600

The main point of those things is to adjust the fit of the gun to improve shooting, like if you need a longer length of pull they add extra length to the butt of the gun, and some like the one in your pic also have a built in cheek riser which lowers the "drop" of the stock. If you need those changes they make the gun fit you better. If you don't need those changes then they make the gun fit you worse. The pouch is not the point, it's just something to do with the extra leather on the far side of the cuff.

That depends on what you are doing with the shotgun. Shooting a round of sporting clays or a 3-gun match? Yeah, you don't want a light gun for that. Walking around innawoods and taking a single shot at game every once in a while? Lightweight is great for that.

Yes, I agree with the other anon. 590 is a dedicated combat shotgun. It's great for that, but you can't get other types of barrels for it like you can most other shotguns. There are no hunting or clay barrels for the 590. No slug barrel either. Benelli M4 also has this same problem. The standard 500 is a great general-purpose shotgun though.

That's a valid concern. If you want absolute minimal spread you should get Federal Flitecontrol or Hornady Versatite buckshot. That particular wad design works better than a choke. Jack of all trades is never master of all trades. A 14"+ LOP stock is not great for recoil control unless you're unironically 6'5". >you can buy an after market stock, mine has an adjustable LoP and comb.
What's the minimum LoP on it? The issue is that any stock which is good for field use will likely not be very good for defensive use so you'd always have to swap back and forth to get optimal results, and most of the adjustable LoP field gun stocks I've seen have a minimum LoP in the 14" range. To give you an example, my sporting gun is 14 1/4" LoP and fits me great, but for a defensive gun I want something in the 12.5" - 13".
>bead is fine for HD ranges
I don't think the bead is "fine" for HD ranges, it's literally not regulated for HD ranges. Sure you can get by but to a certain degree you are making an educated guess about where your buckshot pattern is going to land. It's ok, you PROBABLY won't die over it, but precision is always better. If you want to use a bead get a highball from defender tactical.

Yeah then get one of those two. The pellets are copper plated to avoid deformation, they're in a special wad which keeps the buckshot together even after it leaves the barrel, and the Federal stuff has buffer material on top of that to prevent the pellets from smacking into each other. If it's too pricey I'd just buy decent 8-pellet (not 9-pellet) 00 buck and you should be ok.

the 5 shot is useful for things that arent hd.
the 7 shot isnt particularly good at hd. its only good at being cheap
the 88 is not the only cheap zerofucks option you could get an ar or psa dagger
.
even if you really want a pump for some reason the 88 is inferior to an actual 590.
88 is 7+1
590 is 8+1 for the exact same length and possibly weight if you get a normal 590 not the a1. the only negative of the 590 vs 88 is ones 2 or 3 times the price.

your just getting a gun that will be immediately useless for hd if you ever buy anything else. you arent going to reach for the pump when you have an ar right there.

if you get the 5 shot you can install the long barrel and go do things that arent dirtblasting.
if you really want to be the dirtking you have the 18.

Reasons to get a shotgun
1. if you hunt or plan on hunting
2. if you have access to a range that lets you shoot clay targets
3. if you live in a jurisdiction where is it difficult or impossible to get any other gun or if the reality of the courts where you live make it so shooting a home invader with a shotgun will result in you being less likely to be convicted or if you are poor and a shotgun is all you have/can afford
shotguns are pretty ass, for a number of reasons, if you plan to only shoot static targets with them and you are unironically better off purchasing an AR or one of many pistol caliber carbines in semi auto, lever action or pump action

Have you never sighted and fired a shotgun? You make it sound like having bead sights means your cone of fire is like 50 feet wide at 10 yards. Shot accountability is important but you wont be grossly sending pellets in every direction. 10 to 15 yards is about fist to paper plate size pellet group. Over penetration risk would be the same for an AR in 556 or 300blk.
And whats all this about 5 vs 7 round tube mag? How does that make a difference? The only thing it does is limit your barrel choice, but you can fix that in 10 minutes with some heat and a new tube mag of your chosen capacity.

the argument about 5 vs 7 shots is most home defense shootings are solved in fewer than 3 rounds fired, according to Paul, plus 7 shots makes the gun front heavy. so by getting a 7 shot gun you are making a very slightly better HD gun, when you could have just gotten an AR, at the cost of making the gun useless for everything else other than mag dumping into trash.
with a 5 shot tube you can hunt with it and shoot clays while still using it for HD and if it get's snatched, hey it wasn't that much, and you got your money's worth hunting and shooting clays as opposed to mag dumping into trash

I'm not well read on this subject, but you want to minimize the spread entropy as much as you can if you're defending yourself in a populated area. I've heard of ninth pellet flyers, and I'm concerned about it happening to me if I use a shotgun to defend my home.

I was asking about the maverick 88 and its cylinder bore in this thread earlier. I found this youtube vid where a guy demonstrates the spread with flitecontrol with a maverick 88. The pattern at 10yrds is exactly what I need.

you aren't going to get a significant spread at HD ranges anyway and a lot of people are weirdly paranoid about the 9th pellet flyer thing, when the better answer is just to know which directions are generally safer to shoot
the other thing is that in theory you want the bbs to basically go in on top of each other. you get better penetration from #1 buck because if 1 bb follows the same path as the other it's like racecar drafting and it will go deeper and the fbi stuff usually just cares about penetration depth
also some people for some reason care about longer rangers.
IDK I have #4 powershok. I think 27 pellet because that's the min load that meets the FBIs penetration standard and it's less likely to go through my walls and through my neighbor's exterior walls

What you want in a HD shotgun is retarded and a meme.
The desirable pattern puts all the buckshot in the target. At most HD ranges it's all 9 in a fist sized hole regardless of choke or flight control whatever. Most defensive shotguns are cylinder bore, so no chokes. Flight control wads hold that tight group for longer distances.

>I had figured that the circle packing does not work out for 00 buck in smaller gauge shotshells.
Correct. Circle packing affects this. 12ga can hold 000 in two pellets per layer, 00 in 3 pellets per layer, and so on. Things get different in smaller gauges, you will not find a 000 20ga load for example because they don't pack well for that. But you will find 000 .410 loads because in that case they fit in a single straight row.

>>64092100
>buckshot ammo shot size only changes the pellet count, not the weight of the payload.
The two go hand-in-hand. A 12ga 18-pellet 00 load has twice the payload mass of a 9-pellet load, and will have much higher recoil.

I need some advice from some genuine retards like me. Finally moved out of the family house so I can build /k/ monstrosities with noone the wiser. I've had an idea bouncing around my head the past 5ish years of a triple barrel slamfire shotgun. I left my 4570 a few states back since I dont really feel like having a gun safe in the cheapo apartment I got but figure whats the damage if a piece of shit like this gets swiped.

Here comes my question. We've all seen designs for a basic single shot one of these, hell plastik gatz made that one guide that even a single arm wheelchair bound gorilla could piece one together. But im not sure how to make a three barreled version fit if that makes sense? any suggestions for stock design and keeping the barrels together? also contemplating front grip design. This thing is gonna be heavy unless someone knows an alternative material that might make the pipes lighter without sacrificing integredy. Also is there a reccomendation for easy extraction since I'm aware these pieces of shit tend to have expanding shells? maybe an incesion in the back of the barrel to easily pry the casing?

or should I give up my dreams and find a poorly aged auto 5 this christmas?

would ask diy but didnt see the thread up. if you got any suggestions that you think would help this drunken dream I will watch dillegently.

Anonymous No.64124222

If the gun fits you properly and you know how to properly mount the gun then you always know where the pattern will land with respect to the bead.

The main purpose of "patterning" is to figure out how dense and how large your pattern is with a particular combination of shell and choke, which is relevant for hunting birds and small game or shooting clays. Typically this is done by counting the number of pellets striking in a 30 inch circle. You use the feedback to decide if you need to change chokes or to switch to larger or smaller shot sizes.

Distance was about 10 feet it blasted a silver-dollar hole clear through it, both sides. And this was through the thickest part of the bone. At point blank range it might as well be a slug.

People have been shot point blank against the head with .45 and all it did was zip around the curvature of their skull and pop out of their chin, so weird shit always happens. 99.999999% of the time getting shot with a target load of 1 and 1/8 oz of #7.5 shot at 1200 fps will explode your head at point blank.

>Better than nothing in a pinch but become pretty useless after about 20 feet if not shorter.
This reminds me of a scene from an old Western I saw on TV years ago.
An old gunslinger was teaching a younger guy how to shoot. They had a bunch of bottles lined up in front of a shack and let loose with a side-by-side. The first shot obliterates the bottles and damages the shack behind. The young man is shocked with how powerful the gun was. Then he shoots from a longer distance. The shot hits the side of the shack but all it does is kick up dust, no damage done, guy is clearly disappointed in its effectiveness. The old guy says something about "you better remember that if you want to shoot a man with a squirrel gun"

Im sure I got the distances wrong but yeah, birdshot loses energy pretty fast, but it'll fuck you up if not outright kill you if you shoot someone from say...your bed to your window or door.
>pic related is a good primer to guess how your target load would wound/kill someone

>here is a video of H. S. Thompson fucking with a camera crew by having his neighbor shoot at them from far away with birdshot.

What would be the most suitable shotgun for a maid to use for a mansion/home defense situation that also 'suits' them aesthetically & thematically? Without going too into detail I have an idea for an OC/character but don't know a lot about guns, but I've heard shotguns are apparently great for home defense situations. Some details relating to the needs of the maid are
>There is an expectation for the mansion she is working at to be intruded frequently and at any time
>She is expected to fight multiple intruders at once, anywhere from 3-to-6 people
>It can't be anything too cheap or "pedastrian" cause her master/employer is a snob
>She will have to clean up whatever 'mess' she makes after so she would like to minimise damage to the mansion itself as much as possible
>She has an extensive familiarity with firearm usage and has taken part in numerous gunfights prior to her employment as a maid

>adapter

OPSOL is not a good idea when you can use the Defenser Tactical adapter, which makes your 590/500 receiver into a 590S receiver (able to cycle full length shells and minishells, so you can run a mixed tube if ypu want).

Minishells are okay. They have less kick, so I let my wife use them instead of getting a 20 GA.

>I've heard shotguns are apparently great for home defense situations
Did you ask yourself why? That's mainly because they are relatively cheap and home defense situations don't involve large numbers of attackers. That's the exact opposite of your scenario, where there's a lot of attackers and the people are rich enough to have maids.

>>There is an expectation for the mansion she is working at to be intruded frequently and at any time
They should have guards at the door. Dedicated maid guards, if you like.

>>She is expected to fight multiple intruders at once, anywhere from 3-to-6 people
Shotgun is terrible for large numbers of attackers.

>>It can't be anything too cheap or "pedastrian" cause her master/employer is a snob
Rich fuckers LOVE shotguns. In fact, fancy shotguns perfectly match the classic Victorian maid. But we're talking fine double guns, not something that would be good for engaging multiple attackers. The closest thing that I can come up with--something old, expensive, yet still suitable for multiple attackers, would be something like presentation model Auto-5 or Winchester 1887/1901

Is there only one maid? If you have more than one, you can have the main one shoot multiple double-barrel shotguns, with the others acting as loaders and passing her loaded guns as needed. That's how driven bird shoots worked in high society. You'd buy a set of shotguns, and while you were shooting one your servant would be reloading the other. Then you'd swap guns. If you were a real baddass you'd use three guns with two loaders. For example:

So, perhaps she has two or three super fancy richfag double guns--Purdey, Holland & Holland, Boss, John Dickson, etc, and a couple of assistants who load for her?

You're talking about the recoil-reducing version. The shotgun used by Shane on twd used the "NRS" version that didn't slide back & forth to reduce recoil.

>Did you ask yourself why?
Not particularly in truth, I just kind of did a quick google search and the thing I read said they were great for home invasion and that was really it. I just assumed cause it was an indoor/enclosed area that was the reason they were โ€˜goodโ€™. Should I perhaps look at a different type of gun instead to suit her needs?
>They should have guards at the door. Dedicated maid guards, if you like.
Without going too into the details there are other maid guards (4) but they arenโ€™t allowed to patrol/guard the area because theyโ€™re supposed to โ€œnot existโ€ and be a deniable asset (political fuckery blah blah blah). The people watching the doors are basically hired to seem unassuming to onlookers and die with the expectation they set off the alarm before doing so
>something old, expensive, yet still suitable for multiple attackers, would be something like presentation model Auto-5 or Winchester 1887/1901
The auto-5 has a really nice look to it, I like how many rounded edges it seems to have. The video I saw of it in action seems like itโ€™d be great for blasting down hallways. The Winchester seems like itโ€™d be good too but for some reason I donโ€™t feel as drawn to it.
>Is there only one maid?
Technically no; there are other maids in the mansion (โ€˜combatโ€™ maids, who are supposed to be well trained and deniable security assets, and normal maids with no combat skill whatsoever.) The other combat maids on duty are usually overseeing different areas of the mansion, and the mansion is so big that in the circumstance of an intrusion theyโ€™re largely going to be fighting solo most of the time. Normal maids are expected to bunker down and wait it out until things are all clear. The multiple shotguns thing is cool though not gonna lie, but I donโ€™t want to push things too far into the realm of crazy.
