What went wrong?

The procurement process. All the actual shooters involved in selecting the thing were like "just buy fucking AIs or Sakos" and the government said no. Then they were like "yo this thing cracks with regular use and can unintentionally discharge if you lift the bolt after pulling the trigger" and TACOM and the Army and Barrett ignored them. Then some dude finally started putting shit on social media, years after the issues came to light.

>and the M14 it can replace a rifle, carbine, submachinegun and automatic rifle and we can make it on Garand tooling it'll be so cheap

Barrett is one of those companies that overcharges for everything and underengineers every rifle they make because they make one solid rifle and think they can get away with it. Their fucking AR platform is no better than Aero, yet they cost $4,000.

>because they make one solid rifle and think they can get away with it
I mean, unfortunately anon they don't seem to be wrong on that one? Maybe eventually they will be forced to stop being lazy MIC suckers but so far looks to continue to work for them just like a number of other of companies. I'm vaguely hopeful that after a few decades of semi-stagnation following end of the CW we're starting to feel some winds of change blowing and major players getting shook up a little, but it's slow going and progress could easily reverse.

If they've stuck with 58 calibre cartridge instead of going to 50-70 itdve been fine
If they just did whatever the Italians did I've been fine

I thought these were basically perfect? I've watched video after video of SF snipers lauding them and shooting insanely tight groups, like a three shot three inch group at 700y

>can unintentionally discharge if you lift the bolt after pulling the trigger
How is that even possible? If you pull the trigger it goes bang and the chamber is clear, there's nothing to discharge when you lift the bolt.

If you have the safety on, and you pull the trigger, and you cycle the bolt, it may go off.

Doesn't the Mauser do that, too?

That's retarded why dont they make the safety hold the striker behind the sear instead of in front of it
I thought basic design shit like that was solved in the fukken rolling block days

No. Have you ever handled a mauser?
Anonymous No.64059130 >>64061260
>>64058881
No, what happens when you flip up the safety on a Mauser, pull the trigger, and flip the safety back down? Does it not drop the striker?
Anonymous No.64059925 >>64060155
>>64058505
The weapon won't fire right when the trigger is pulled, but rather, if you try to lift the bolt after pulling the trigger. See this video: >>64056069

That's not what happens in that video, he's not even touching the bolt handle when it goes off.

Check the other videos of the issue, they're more obvious.

Okay, but unlocking the bolt is clearly not what causes it if it will go off without unlocking the bolt.

>Something is adopted by the US military
>Real world trials and use by dipshits causes problems not found in engineering and testing to rise to the top
>People who think they are VERY smart, Europeans, and non-whites seethe online like the sky is falling
>Meanwhile, problems are brought to the OEM, solved, and fixes are implemented in subsequent designs
>Same retards act smart again years later "yeah remember those fudds who said the X did Y when it was adopted? Retards, it was a Z issue, everyone knew that."
This has happened countless times, every time, and every time people say the same shit.
How many catastrophic issues do you think the average new military aircraft or land vehicle demonstrates after like 6 hours of flight time? Probably a laundry list.
