What's the consensus on Henry rifles in general?

Are lever actions a good choice for long guns?

>What's the consensus on Henry rifles in general?
some actual jew is going to start seething but henry is decent. their biggest issues are people don't really know how well the guns will hold up, which isn't the biggest issue for a hunting gun and they make really fucking ugly guns. like nothing to do with the engravings that one homo is going to seethe over, but they pick like the ugliest designs, BLR actions, 336 actions, that ugly .22 action everyone uses, barrel bands, straight stocks, no 24 inch barrels.
oh and they use shrunk down 336 receivers for their pistol caliber guns which makes the guns fucking pigs compared to a winchester 1892 or marlin 1894. and they use potmetal with cheap coatings for the golden boy .22 at least. it's like how an AR or mossberg receiver isn't a pressure bearing component so it doesn't matter, but it is a thing
>Are lever actions a good choice for long guns?
they're pretty cool. technically depends on what you are doing
>Is 45-70 a good round?

>Henry
Still one of the smoothest actions in lever rifles. They found something that works and didn't fuck with it. They resisted making side loading an option and relied on tube loading for a long time, now they use both most of the time.

>Lever actions
Limited ammo capacity compared to magazine feed systems since 90% of them are tube loaders. They use pistol ammo, 30-30, or 45-70 the bulk of the time making ammunition choice rather limited. Make sure you use a full stroke when cycling a round or they can jam and are kind of a bitch to clear. That said, much like revolvers, you will have a hard time fucking them up. Extremely reliable, easy to handle, and tough as hell weapons. Taking them apart completely for a complete cleaning is massive hassle, however, it is an extreme rarity that you need to do so, if ever, outside through the fucker in a mud hole.

>45-70
Outside around 200 yards? Kinda useless given the power loss and drop. Think I recall a 1000 yard shot dropping like 160 feet or some insane shit.
Inside that 200 yards? Will pretty much kill anything. Outside of elephants and shit, a 45-70 is one deadly ass round. It's loud, it's heavy, it kicks hard as fuck for a rifle round, but it's still damn good at killing game.
Unfortunately, you better hand load your own rounds because they are expensive to purchase being about $2.50 a round on average.

Winchester stopped production if 1886 rifles in 1935 and marlin stopped production of the 1895 in 1917. The .444 marlin and .44 mag both came out in the 60s to fill the gap in the market and it wasn't until the 1970s and mid 1980s that marlin and winchester started producing guns in .45-70 again and they primarily did it for silhouette shooting.

I think it's a couple of things
a lot of henry models have octagonal barrels which adds at least half a pound
the brass as you said. I know on the .22s it's heavy pot metal, I don't remember what it is on the centerfires, but if it's brass it's still probably heavier so the gun won't explode since brass is weaker
and henry uses 336 style receivers for everything. Marlin only uses the 336 for .30-30 and .45-70 so the receiver itself is heavier for henry rifles in .357, .44 mag and .45lc than the marlin rifles of the same caliber

I don't think bullet technology was there yet for constant power high speed stuff.

It must have been really scarce brass before the 1930s or good tool steel dies were unobtainable because you'd have to do a lot of massaging.

45-70 is a shitty and expensive round. It is powerful for under 50 yards but its rainbow trajectory makes taking it past 150 difficult. It also looses energy due to this awful trajectory much faster. Lever action is objectively the worst rifle action. They way you cycle the gun disrupts the sight picture more than any other rifle action. Cycling the gun from prone requires more movement. Tube magazines are less reliable and less safe than stacked mags. They really only make sense in shotguns. Any gas or bolt gun is far better and safer. If you want a manual action bolt is the way to go. Straight-wall cartridges for anything other than revolvers or desert eagles are fucking stupid. All that being said I have nothing bad to say about Henry, but lever actions are a waste of money, material, and time UNLESS you want it for fun. If you really want a lever gun and you arnt taking larger game than deer with it id want it chambered in .357/.38

45-70 is fine for most hunting in my area. You can rarely get longer than 50 yards for a clear shot given the stupid amount of trees, brush, uneven terrain, and such.

While deer are common targets, boar and bear are frequent targets too. If I was in the Midwest flatlands mainly hunting deer? Yeah, 45-70 is a dumb round to use. For my area and game type? It's a solid choice. Better rounds absolutely exist, but saying 45-70 is bad is just being retarded.

Also saying lever action is bad is like saying a revolver is bad. Both are simple, effective, and long lasting choices. Any time someone swears a gas chambered, magazine fed system is better, I always assume the person making the claim is a shit shot that needs the extra ammo to make up for their lack of ability.
Anonymous No.64064231 >>64064414
The biggest benefit for a lever action 45-70 is the guns are usually smaller, lighter, and easier to handle if you are a hunter who stalks in brush for larger game. Most hunters are fuckers hiding in stands and blinds looking for long range shots and in those situations plenty of time to line up a good shot placement, in those situations a lever action 45-70 is a poor choice. Shorter, faster sighting, high powered rifle rounds have their place though. Cowboy loads are fucking retarded though, never use them.

I've been using their 9mm PCC in some matches because all my other PCCs are banned (canada). I've put about 2k rounds through it so far (mostly pmc and fiocchi), and it seems accurate enough to ring a plate at 100m. It cycles fine but it is far from ideal. There is no barrel shroud so it is easy to burn your hands after long strings of fire. Also I cannot drop the mag as fast as an AR9 because the button is on the left; I do miss AR controls. Within the 1k round mark the rear ghost ring unscrewed itself. It is expensive for what it is if you have other options for PCCs.

>the lever feels great to use
>very nice trigger
>I don't think I've ever had a malfunction that wasn't user error, I had one round semi hang up one time ever but I just reran the action and it was fine. I might have short stroked it
Cons
>ugly
>I think all .22 lever actions are the same basic internals
>fake brass finish is coming off the receiver and barrel band
>receiver and barrel band are like some kind of zinc pot metal
>you can feel the barrel heat up
>I found some rust I think in the barrel once, still shoots fine, might just be the old >never use a borescope because it's only ever bad news, kind of a thing
>it's annoying to clean right because you needed a limited access .22 rimfire pull through or you have to disassemble the whole thing
>it's not wobbly but the wood is noticeably thin in some parts of the stock and one side if the stock where you grip is like an 8th of an inch or so longer than the other
>very front heavy
>factory sights are ass
>stock angle and comb are way, way too low and make it hard to get a good cheek weld
>you have to load it near the muzzle
>if you try to cycle it without the mag tube spring thing in it will jam and it's a bitch to unjam without unscrewing the whole thing
>if you want receiver peep sights you need tog get the receiver cover drilled and tapped and I needed to tape an inch and a half of sleeping mat foam to the stock and then put a leather cover with a cheek riser on it to get a good cheek weld

a 22lr lever gun can be good as a first gun for a kid

not to be a fudd but they still have a manual action so it prevents your kid from just magdumping into trash with say an ar15 style rifle, so they are forced to be somewhat deliberate with each shot, but not to the point of a bolt action where some people would say they take the fun out of shooting for kids

I dont have anything against teaching kids to shoot modern rifles, but when they are just barely learning the basics of sight allignment, sight picture, trigger control, breathing, stance, etc etc it is perfectly fine

While I like the 45-70, you can literally get started loading whatever gun you have right now. Straight walls and rimmed tapered walls are very easy to load for but handloading is not a huge deal for bottlenecks, you have one extra step which is trimming, and there's a bunch of dead simple trimmers out there. You don't have to anneal cases, it just gives you longer case life before you have to toss 'em. Big thing is to get a couple manuals, and then pick a couple loads (preferably based on factory loads you know you like to shoot) that give you mild to wild performance, then get the components for those and build 'em up.

Reliable
Functional
Accurate
No points of failure
Easy to find ammo for
Ease of use
Not cumbersome for extended periods of carry
Quick sight picture
Easy to reload (used to fail here with only tube loading options)
Can toss it in a trunk and forget about for 100 years then take it out of the trunk and it still functions fine (this kills most semi-autos right off.)

No. A meme round would imply it doesn't have practical use. A 45-70 lever action is a practical choice for a brush gun when you have large game (boar, bear, etc). hard hitting rounds fired from a weapon that can go through some shit and still function with a short overall length, fast sights, and minimal points of failure.

>What's the consensus on Henry rifles in general?
decent rifles in their niche, any real difference between the levergat makers comes down to personal preference and brand loyalties
>Are lever actions a good choice for long guns?
since the tube magazine necessitated flat tipped bullets for most of their production, many of the cartridges levergats chamber lack the long range reach of modern cartridges you would get in a bolt-action, single shot, or semiautomatic. i ran a season using Hornady lever revolution with my 30-30 and scored a 300yd kill (admittedly irresponsible), but i wouldn't recommend long shots for most levergat purposes.

For starters the 45-70 is superior for suppression compared to lots of other cartridges including 44mag/444 marlin. Lower chamber pressure means lower muzzle pressure, heavier bullet options give better BC and guarantee a thru and thru, and a wider diameter meaning bigger holes to bleed out faster. That's not even getting into the wider variety of loadings for the 45-70 compared 44 magnum. Keep spouting "meme cartridge" you slack-jawed range queer.

>>64073218
Haven't shot a 500, but like many big bores you can load light or total wristbreakers. Muzzlebrakes work really well for high muzzle pressure rounds, I was shocked at how little a serious 460 load recoiled in my 460 S&W PC. The flash and concussion were tremendous but there was very little recoil.

For dangerous game you want the widest diameter (bigger holes), largest meplat (normal surface to make said holes), heaviest bullet (more inertia to go all the way through and reduce chance of deflection) to incapacitate quickly. If all your onions ridden body can handle is a 44 mag then at least that's better than a 22LR, or 357. Going bigger, as long as you can handle it, will always improve your chances of a one shot stop and that's why cartridge development didn't magically stop when the 44 magnum came about.

Some fag will say just be a good shot with any other cartridge but if you've ever actually hunted you know that there's too many variables in the real world with real animals, throw in dangerous game and you better take any advantage you can get.
