There shouldn't be any penalty for stolen valor, but there also shouldn't be any benefit from it in the first place. If guys with 214s get free coffee with no need to provide proof of CIB or anything that shows they ever put skin on the line, why shouldn't trash guys and other shitty lines of work that provide more direct and immediately obvious benefit to society? I don't think you really get stolen valor in euro countries (or at least it doesnt seem that way) because they don't give a shit about their militarys; and while I don't think we need to go that far, we definitely dont need to dickride veterans to nearly the extent we do; as that directly incentivizes stolen valor.

Americans need to stop worshipping the military, which is why these lying cocksuckers can make millions on fake war stories. In the meantime, I do think they should be hit with hefty fines because they lied for financial gain.

Given that red staters will never get the military's cock out of their mouths, the esteem the military is held in should be protected. And these SOF guys lying their way into million dollar book, podcast, and speaking deals hurt the reputation and esteem the military is held in. It's not good for the military's brand to have charlatans running around and cashing in on fake war stories, because it turns the image of the American soldier from an honorable citizen-soldier into a lying, scamming piece of shit.

Our civilian-military relationship is in a weird spot because of Vietnam. The realization that maybe we shouldn't have spit on conscripts who frequently had no choice in the matter led to a massive overcorrection made worse by the government mothballing the draft in favor of an all-volunteer force. The opening to Patton aside, we don't tend to think of ourselves as a martial people, so there's a niggling fear for many that if we don't sweeten the deal, nobody would ever join the military and then we wouldn't have one when we need it.

In France, it's forbidden to wear unearned decorations of any sort. Wearing a french current service uniform as a civilian, or bande patro, or rank insigna, is also no-no.
