all major powers certainly have this weapon
This image represents the potential range of an EMP, a nuclear bomb that destroys all electrical infrastructure like a solar storm over a very large area including telecommunications, missiles, planes, trains, and even entire banking systems. In other words it sends a country back to the 19th century and renders it completely incapable of resisting an enemy invasion

This weapon has already been successfully tested in the past; it seems fairly obvious that all major powers have them in stock

All countries don't have GRBs. No countries have GRBs. We aren't even complete sure what creates GRBs although whatever it is, it happens inside supernovas.

Turns out after that one test that damaged the wires electrical engineers and electrical utilities wanting to avoid having everything destroyed spent the time and effort to modify the electrical grid to deal with solar flares and high altitude nuclear bombs.
Morons that think remote viewing and aliens visiting Earth are real discovered this one fact and built up a whole massive doomsday weapon belief.

A nuclear bomb at 100km altitude just doesn't produce that much power down on the ground once you stop building your electrical systems without any fault tolerance for induced voltage.
Utilities had nearly the same problem with lightning strikes that didn't even hit power lines causing damage to equipment back in the 50s.

The last solar storm proved that as the grid weathered it with no reported blackouts.

I don't think so, certainly the power is less than a solar storm but it is much more concentrated and it only takes a short pulse to fry a system, we have never had a large solar storm for a hundred years but that hasn't stopped satellites from being fried anyway

Most major powers have enough nukes to raze America. Frying electronics isn't going to help you when you have a shitload of retaliatory nukes coming at you within a couple minutes of your initial launch. So what's the point?

A satellite that has no way to discharge anything and is built to be as light as possible while still meeting its expected lifespan is exactly like a power line on Earth.

If you think an emp or a solar storm can destoy a modern western electrical grid you were too retarded to even post this thread you scientifically illterate moron.

Yeah but then what?
The USA has multiple ways to retaliate.
The USCG can repel any attempt from a foreign navy to invade, and if not the army national guard is plenty capable of handling an invasion force.
NATO isn't going to be too pleased about you attacking a key member, or Canada. Mexico might be a little miffed too.

the only people who talk about EMPs with hushed voices are people who don't know shit about electricity. What's even more annoying is to hear those same people make dramatic assertions about world powers.

protip: if something is featured in call of duty, it isn't some murky state secret, it's bro-lore.

>an EMP, a nuclear bomb that destroys all electrical infrastructure
No, you fucking idiot. The EMP is a side effect of a nuke, it's not a specific type of bomb.

>renders it completely incapable of resisting an enemy invasion
Yeah except the US is a terrible place to invade on either coast and a logistical nightmare. The military owns guns, the populace owns guns too, and as shit as the government here gets the last thing people want is some foreign country invading and telling them what to do. I’m more concerned about saboteurs messing with the grid and power supply

or a few teams of special forces could sabotage electrical substations and have the same effect without any of the complications associated with launching a nuclear weapon

EMP bombs require a significantly different design when compared to traditional nuclear weapons and nobody has built one in that spec since the 50s
the two-stage devices defeat themselves in this usage

>No, you fucking idiot. The EMP is a side effect of a nuke, it's not a specific type of bomb.
High altitude (most area of effect) EMP by nuke is produced by gamma radiation. Gamma output is vastly dependent on bomb design. Fusion doesn't produces gamma, only roentgen Fission produces gamma. To max gamma and therefore EMP output bomb should have much has possible of fission and preferable has thin case walls to reduce gamma absorption or ideally during detonation bomb has no external case at all.

May yes maybe be no.
But existence of 3 stage nukes is nothing impossible. And quiet logical actually. They are better.
1. They are much more dense and compact
2. They are incredibly dirty (100 times more dirty than notorious cobalt bomb). Fallout for more dead commies is a nice feature.

yeah, the W-88 is a two-stage thermonuclear device and the first stage is the only one that contributes to the EMP because it makes the atmosphere opaque to the second stage
I think the French or the British had trouble making a two-stage device and were single stage maxxxing briefly in the 50s, which would have produced the best EMP

If it was that easy to cripple a country then it would happen non-stop.
Emp is not a silver bullet for all electronics, essential stuff is shielded from it. A simple faraday cage works and I’d imagine major countries have even better defenses.
It would be much easier to knock out substations with saboteurs.

As it presented on diagram W-88 is 3 stage and most of its yeild comes out from U-235 and U-238 fission.
