I live in Japan, and there is basically no way to enjoy firearms as a hobby in this country. Even bladed weapons are highly regulated, and they need to possess artistic or historical merit to be registered and privately owned.

I enjoy the mechanical aspects of firearms, but if I stay in this country, I'll never get to touch them again. I guess it is the price I pay for affordable dental care and cool architecture.

In such a situation, what would you do?

I'm honestly not sure. I've really considered moving there, I used to work for a Japanese company and spent a bunch of time there, I've got a whole group of Japanese friends, pretty solid opportunities to end up with a qt cosplayer waifu, offers for good jobs, and meanwhile I'm struggling in both my career and romantic life here in the US. Having spent time in Japan though I'm really not sure I could do it despite all of those benefits. My lifestyle and too many of the things I enjoy are impossible there and I'm afraid my free time would be nothing but shitposting and vidya or something instead of the active hobbies I enjoy here.

I've spent extensive time there as the only gaijin among Japanese people and never experienced that. It might be the case among their equivalent of boomers but I've found younger Japanese people to be some of the friendliest people I've ever encountered once they realize you can even halfway speak their language. The friends who've encouraged me to move to Japan and offered me jobs, introductions to women, etc. are all Japanese.

Maybe I'm special, idk, my Japanese friends, a lot of whom work with a lot of foreigners and travel internationally a lot, have often remarked on how much better I fit in with them other gaijin they've known, but I think it's a lot more likely that the people talking about how racist and xenophobic the Japanese are are just entitled morons who can't read the room and act like subhumans while over there when in reality they're doing the equivalent of a jeet coming to an American city and popping a squat in the middle of Disneyland and getting the same reaction that jeet would get.

The second video is him using an actual hunting shotgun, looks like an Italian (Beretta?) semi auto. Those and hunting rifles are effectively the only legal firearms in Japan, and come with a massive number of restrictions and licensing. Handguns are technically licensable but there's a hard max of something like 100 handgun licenses nationwide, so you literally have to wait for a handgun licensee to die for a slot to open up, and the restrictions are even crazier, like having to store said handgun at the local PD station when not in use in sanctioned sporting events/practice.

It's key to other somewhat or very proud people too including Europe and such. 99% of rando foreigners cannot be bothered to put in even a modicum of effort to learn and speak the local language. If you do it instantly sets you apart. Obviously you have to still not be an asshole, and if you live there you'll want to eventually become fully fluent, but someone who isn't native working to learn a language purely of their own choice (everyone knows foreign language education in the US is mostly a joke compared to how seriously other countries work to teach english) that does mean something. Also makes it far easier to pick up cultural cues and not do insanely rude things accidentally.

Maybe you live in a shit tier part of the country. When I lived in Hokaido I’d go out hunting with the farm boys pretty frequently. Only difference between there and here that I saw was they had to collect their shells and drop them off at the local police station, but the police station just had a drop box and nobody really cared. Stuff like beer snd cigarettes and food are so cheap there though that it’s easy to live. From an american perspective having like a 10 dollar bill isn’t shit, but in Japan that much money (¥1480) could buy me a pack of cigarettes (~400 yen) a huge 500ml can of beer (~100 yen) and a nice big meal (hot pot or ramen is usually less than 1000 yen. In terms of beerni should state here japan has weird laws about beer where malted drinks are taxed higher so they basically just make a bunch of bud lite ripoffs to keep malt content low then add extra liquor to make it 5% like normal beer. Suntory Kinmugi is like $0.75 per can and is actually really good. Tastes like breadier bud light or coors light for under 1 USD per pint.

Basically it has to be a shotgun and there are no lifetime bans but if you committed spousal violence or a violent offence you have to wait 3-10 years depending on the crime, it has to be long barreled, and it should be 12 gauge or smaller. They already have, a few actually. It's tough with most because I'd have to move there for it go to anywhere, but there's one in particular that really likes the US and has an interest in moving here, who I narrowly missed hooking up with a few years ago due to unlucky circumstance, and who's been in my DMs showing pretty strong interest (by Japanese girl standards) recently and we've got tentative plans to spend a bunch of time together if I can make it to Japan this fall.

I can't substantiate the following claims, because they were made offhandedly in a lecture about tourism, but a professor of economics once told me that 90% of Japan's tourist income is from the top 10% wealthiest tourists—meaning that the remaining 90% contribute almost nothing. One can infer that the crime and nuisances caused by tourists also comes almost exclusively from the bottom 90%.

He stated furthermore that the big "wave" of Chinese tourists is past its crest, and we are now seeing a wave of Indians and Southeast Asian tourists instead. That much seems to be true. He went on to say that the next wave of tourists will be from Africa, when some of their countries eventually achieve a middle class.

I don't really care what color the tourists are, but there are too many of them. Other places like Venice are introducing a lottery system to prevent too many people from entering at once, and perhaps a visa lottery system would serve Japan as well with priority given to rich clients who spend more).

The airsoft stores in Akihabara have signs saying not to touch and an attendant standing next to them who scolds you if you try (I didn't notice the sign at first because I was drawn immediately to the SMG on display).
