How Ineffective Is An SBR 5.56 At Cycling Or Achieving Full Burn, Really?
I often hear this, that 5.56 in an AR platform is ineffective at cycling, especially subs and automatic fire, when used in a shorter barrel like 10.5 and/or suppressed.

How much truth is there to this, and are there any ways to mitigate that without switching calibers?

longer barrel. If you want a short-barrelled AR get one chambered in a cartridge optimized for short barrels, not one optimized for long barrels

Is 300 blackout reeeeeeally going to make that much difference?

I just want a cool SBR that I can shoot full auto suppressed without worrying about misfires or jamming. Who really needs accuracy above 100m?

Handload autistically until you find something that burns fast enough while slinging the bullet with acceptable speed and accuracy

if all you're worried about is reliability then caliber doesn't matter. the parts you use or the make of the upper would be what matters. things like gas port size and buffer weights or an adjustable gas block even. 300blk is more forgiving in an sbr but since you mentioned full auto then you need to consider ammo cost and that really does leave you with 5.56. or 9mm I suppose but sounds like you want a rifle caliber.

>full burn

im no expert, but I think this is relatively the same thing as velocity, at least to the every day shooter

generally the point of diminishing returns for 5.56 barrel length is 18", you dont get much more out of 20 than you do 18

on the lower end once you get lower than 11.5-12.5 you see a steeper curve in velocity loss

11.5 and 12.5 are effective with not shit tier ammo within the range you can reasonably expect to shoot with a non magnified optic, if you have magnification then go up, but not past 18

I would say if you are going shorter than 11.5 get something in a different caliber

10.5" 5.56 can cycle fine in full auto. Juat make sure you have a good bcg and a h2 buffer.

Mark 18s have been killing brown’s since the late 90s. If it’s good enough for the sandbox it’s good enough for you.

short barrel AR-15's are AIDS.
5.56 is very velocity dependent and when you have a short ass barrel then it reduces the power significantly.
One could argue "muh CQB" but if you're some random retard in the US with the idea that there's gonna be some nasty civil war then you're more than likely going to be taking 200+ yard shots where a 14.5, 16, or 20 in barrel will serve you much better than a 10.5 or 11.5 in.

300 blk solves the issues 5.56 has with this, just like how the Russians learned about how the AKS-74U sucked ass with 5.45 but short barrels AK's in 7.62x39 were decent. Same issue with the AR15's in 5.56 vs 300blk

Anonymous No.64073907
>>64070442
Yes. 300 blk tries to replicate x39 without the bolt and mag issues. x39 barely suffers muzzle velocity loss untill ~11-10"
Utilizing newer purpose made propellants can make that loss even smaller, but we are talking dozen(s) of fps, max.
Accepted threshold for reliable fragmentation is around ~2500 fps though, so you need tumble, hollowpoint, monoCu grooved or multicomponent ammunition at those speeds to get a good wound channel.

Retards go below 10"
10'', it does the job.

You'll only be crunching numbers if you go beyond that.

>barrel length
24” is fine. It’s a very heavy barrel with good finishes and reduces muzzle rise in full auto fire (I can hit 2 round bursts on a half size torso at 200 yards, which isn’t bad)
>handguard
It’s relatively lightweight and bipod is just build in so I don’t have bullshit hanging off the front that can get snagged (though it is way more expensive than it’s worth)
>optic
Just what I had laying around when I put it together. 2.5x is fine and the glass is clear enough. Reticle isn’t bad either. Not as durable as an ACOG but for $100 it’s great
>no light
Didn’t have one laying around for the picture, plus I don’t figure a light machinegun needs a light all that urgently
>sling
Completely arbitrary choice. The handguard has the QD mount in the same place as nearly every other handguard on the market and with how I carry it it is comfortable, allows for enough adjustment that I can have it tight to my body while waking around and also loose enough to be able to go prone with it infront of me.

SBR cycle violently. They are not less reliable at firing in the short term. The violence of their action does increase wear causing parts to fail sooner. But overall you could say they are less prone to cyclic failures.

This is what I was looking for, thanks anon. I like the idea of having a nice chrome barrel, I understand that full auto is going to degrade that barrel much quicker, but where the original purpose of this rifle needs to be for testing suppressors I'm much more concerned about proper cycling and initial gas reliability.
