Hello /k/. A few years ago, I inherited three handguns from a drug-addict grandfather; a Colt Defender in .45, a Colt Mustang in .380, and a S&W SD9. Normally I think this would be a fine selection of handguns, but I've found them all to be uncomfortable to shoot due to having large hands and disliking striker triggers in the case of the S&W. I'm looking to trade/sell them for a full size SA or DA/SA pistol, in 9mm or .45 ACP.

What are some good options in the 800-1200 range, and what are some handguns to avoid?

P220 .45, there’s a big anon in hg with like 6 of them.
Beretta 92 is good, avoid the frame lever versions

Personally I like the PX4 compact

don't get rid of them, they'd make better for an heirloom

The P22- series of pistols definitely has my attention, I shot a 226 Legion at a gun store and that impressed me with how good it felt. SIG should really stick to making hammer-fired options lol

Normally I would agree but they're all post-2010 guns and I have no connection to that grandfather for multiple reasons. I will likely be inheriting other firearms from far better men that would make good heirlooms in the future

Good:
Sig 226
Beretta 92
HK USP

Middle:
CZ 75. Any variety is good, but CZs require more maintenance than anything else on this list.
PX4. chunky, but very high quality.
Mac 9 DS Comp. The only 2011 on this list that's actually ok, but it will be a project gun because it's still Turk clone. At least there's no MIM

Honorable mention
Bersa TPR9XT. Chunky and no rail, but a 5 inch full metal DA/SA that you basically dont have to take care of.

Avoid
Knockoffs of any of the above. at your price range you can get the real thing.

Why you bagging on gramps? What has this got to do with anything?

He gave you guns didn't he? What an ungrateful jerk you are.

I included the detail of inheritance to represent the fact that I have no cost sunk into these pistols thus can sell them without worry of value deprecation. He was a pedophile and a wife-beater, the man can get fucked and stay buried for all I care.

Don't judge striker triggers by the SD9. It's one of the worst examples there is.

You know what other gun is extremely chunky? The Beretta 92 you put in the Good category. It's one of the fattest 9mm guns on the market (great for people with large hands like OP), so the PX4 should have also been in good.

The 92 has a better grip that makes it not an issue. If you like the vertec, it's even better. PX4 is fat and smooth

What I'm trying to say is that it's a nonissue in both, especially for people like OP who have large hands.

Now I don't have gorilla hands, but I do wear L gloves, sometimes XL depending on the manufacturer. The shape and texture of the PX4 is a definite downgrade compared to the 92

My vote is for a 92 as well. I got a 92x for like 600 bucks or something with a rebate a few years ago and it's been perfect. It comes with the vertec grip and another one that emulates the old style bigger grip, I usually stick to the vertec though.

Beretta 92

USP if you want a .45 or Beretta 92 if you want a 9mm.
I'd keep the Defender if I were you. I have big hands a New Agent and I find it to be a very comfortable pistol.

the PX4 is thinner that the 92, personally I like shooting my PX4 more than my 92s

I'd recommend keeping the Mustang because they are neat and going rate for used 380s is through the floor right now. They are hard to sell for good money.

At the very least keep the SD9 because it is going to be absolutely worthless for trade. If nothing else keep it as a backup gun in your bathroom or under the seat in your car (though that might not be legal everywhere).

For SA or DA/SA it really depends on personal preference. With large hands I'd avoid a Hi-Power (hammer bite) or CZ-75 (slide rides inside frame, hard to grab). Sig 220/226 is going to be easy to manipulate but you might accidentally ride the decocker if you shoot thumb by thumb like I do. Beretta 92 or a regular full size 1911 are definitely worth checking out. S&W 59 or 5906 are worth a glance if a used one is available locally, ditto for Ruger P85/P89/P90/P95. Ruger P series in general are super reliable bricks that have basically no resale value because collectors don't care about them.
