It makes sense that the most practical and functional designs are based on those found in nature.
In reality our technology has nearly caught up to the scifi fantasies from twenty, thirty years ago. The only real advancements that haven't taken place is the miniaturization of energy production it would take to power these machines to make them practical. And the use of rare earth minerals in battery tech makes it even more likely that such machines won't be used for warfare any time soon.

For this little tachikoma, I'd focus on numerous livestream cameras (including nightvision & thermal) for surveillance, and concentrate on making it as quiet as possible. Even more fun if it can invert during flight and grab a ceiling or tree branch, etc. Maybe even use some version of Raspberry Pi to give it a suite of autonomic functions for when it encounters signal disruption.

Then send in the Baba Yagas once you have solid recon.
