The only people calling it a stealth fighter right now are south koreans and retards.

Even official Korean documents refer to it as a non-stealth fighter and there are even some official documents that refer to the KF-21EX (the version with the internal weapon bays) as a "low observable" fighter, not a true stealth fighter.

If it is lower observable than whatever Best Korea has, then good for them I guess. I like recessed missile hardpoints like on the Phantom, and I get they may reduce radar return a bit, they still seem to be a bigger return than just implementing a belly bay would be.

Also when they say LO, they mean it has stealth characteristics (airframe shape and internal weapons bay) but doesn't have a radar absorbing coating to get close to the F-22/F-35 level of RCS reduction.

...yes that's literally the entire point of my post.

They are not using LO to mean stealth on par with ACTUAL stealth aircraft (F-22/F-35/B-2/B-21, hell even F-117) they are using LO to mean IWB + stealthy airframe shape ONLY.

It wont have a radar absorbing material coating like ACTUAL stealth planes have.

While they "joined" in 2010, the actual agreement for the KF-21 development funding split was done in 2015/16.

They've also paid $400B Won (around $300M USD) of the owed $600B Won, and thus owe around $200B Won (around $150M USD) to South Korea.

The original agreement was for ~1.7T Won (around $1.3B USD) but it was renegotiated in a finalized agreement in june 2025 to only pay about 1/3rd of that amount in exchange for reduced technology transfer.

Part of the original agreement included giving Indonesia one of the prototype airframes for testing/evaluation, but I'm unsure if that will still happen.

IWB just reduces the RCS from being complete dogshit, to being slightly stealthy.

You can intergrade a missile hardpoint into the body in a way that maintains stealth with a missile fitted or not.
The primary downside is it'll only work for that one missile and if you carry a different missile or bomb stealth is severely compromised.

Consider, if you will, how much asshurt the sork arms industry must cause jeet shills by its mere existence. For every hilariously corruption-riddled failure of a defense project that India has attempted in recent memory, South Korea has a successful equivalent. Compare the INSAS to the K2, or the Arjun to the K2 (the other one), or the Tejas to the T-50, or the submarine that did the needful to the KSS-III class. Hard work, technical competency, and visible growth vs laziness, corruption, and every other type of brownoid shittery.

Genuine answer. Because aircraft design doesn't work that way. China has been building up their aircraft design and manufacturing industry for 40 years before the J-20B (the version that is actually stealth) began manufacturing. And China is so opaque that we all know the J-20B isn't actually operational yet, most of their claims have time delay that they just don't mention. South Korea has been focusing on their own aircraft for less time. Simple as.

https://aviationweek.com/defense/aircraft-propulsion/kai-plans-internal-weapons-bay-kf-21ex
>DAEJEON, South Korea—Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has revealed that a future variant of the KF-21 fighter will feature an internal weapons bay capable of housing a 2,000-lb. guided bomb, significantly enhancing its strike capability while maintaining low observability.

>The upgraded variant, designated KF-21EX, is designed to engage hardened ground targets—such as reinforced bunkers—without increasing its radar cross section (RCS) through external weapons carriage.

>The disclosure came during an air force conference held July 28 in Daejeon, South Korea, where KAI presented a detailed roadmap for the KF-21EX under the title, “KF-21 Performance Improvement and Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) Combat System.” The presentation offered the most comprehensive public look to date at the planned enhancements, building upon initial concepts disclosed last year.

>The addition of the internal weapons bay is the most significant structural change in the KF-21EX. According to KAI, the bay is expected to accommodate a range of munitions including the MBDA Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, LIG Nex1's indigenous long-range air-to-air missile (LRAAM), the GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb, KAI's own Air-Launched Effects (ALE), and 2,000-lb.-class guided bombs—believed to be the GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM).

KF-21 was designed to be upgraded into a 5th gen from the onset.

>Literally what they've been doing since forever
They shit on the street since forever but doesn't mean they should continue to do so. And they're in the chink bashing alliance out of personal interest and that won't change due to tariffs.

>The KF-21 internal weapons bay air-to-air missile pylon project has been announced.(25.10.~29.9.)
>Ejection method: Pneumatic ejection
>Mounting store weight: Capable of mounting AMRAAM-class weapons
>Ejection length: To ensure safe separation, the weapon is distanced from the weapon pylon during separation.
>Development Concept

>Development of a weapon mounting/separation mechanism technology that securely fixes air-to-air weapons in the internal weapons bay until separation and ensures safe separation during ejection.

>Development of a release device technology that safely separates the weapon from the aircraft by distancing it from the pylon through a release control device, using compressed air, according to the release signal, over the required ejection length.

>Development of the design and performance verification technology for the weapon pylon release device and pneumatic control device to meet the performance objectives outlined in the development goals.

>Necessity of Research and Development

>Development of an internal weapons bay for aerial platforms is necessary to minimize drag and achieve a low radar cross-section (RCS) shape, in order to evade threats from anti-aircraft weapons and enemy aircraft, while infiltrating to the target area and executing mission objectives.
