Got a matching Type 2 Paratrooper rifle for $1650 today life is good (Mum ground off but not paying $1,000 extra for it on)

>Tell us the story of the Surp that got away.
I passed on 900 rounds of 8mm mauser for $300 but 2 months later I saw the guy again and bought it so not really a get away moment

My boomer hate story is a boomer at Tusla making fun of me (18 at the time) for not being $5,000+ to "A gun show like this" and a more recent one was 2 boomers making fun of me for only bringing my gun to show off to people

>2 boomers making fun of me for only bringing my gun to show off to people
This is also fair game to make fun of you BUT it depends on the setting. Was there a space/time or is it a place were show and tell is a thing, or did you just kinda bring a gun to a gunshow to talk about it? essentially you were a walking "display only" which is dumb, unless it was a really cool gun. I woulda chatted you up too depending on what it was.

Someone has renumbered the bolt body. They even numbered it upside down to boot.

When you get it, I would go over all the other numbers more closely, but I suspect it's fine. There is a hidden number on the forestock that you can usually partially see in the hole for the pin that lines up the two halves.

I've seen several in person and a few on Legacy and gun broker go for ~$2000 so for $1650 I'm pretty happy with it

I'm definitely gonna hold onto it for awhile but I might bring it to Tusla to trade for stuff if I find something I REALLY want

Maybe you can answer me, not sure if I got a good price or not since the numbers seem wonky.
I purchased a S marked barrel Koishikawa 38 that was decommissioned as a training rifle as far as I can tell. (The mum is present with a circle of 0's around the edge. Also has a ζ–‡ kanji after the 三八式)
I don't think the bolt numbers match in any way, it also only has 4 digits that I don't see anywhere else on the rifle.

Paid 275 freedom bucks on a whim. I'll have to pay that much in 6.5 now though just to enjoy it I reckon.

I have no idea about the price, I'm europoor and I'm too lazy to do the neccesary math, but it seems that you've got yourself a trainnig rifle that has been deemed unworthy of military service. Be aware of the danger. Inspect the shit out of it before you shoot.

I was just browsing online for a couple examples, the training rifles are pretty common and just mean they refit parts and used it not in combat. It should still be functional and "safe".
Mine seems to be pretty Frankensteined with a sporterized stock, a slightly chopped barrel, and some aftermarket sights.
I'm not a big milsurp guy at all, so I'll just enjoy the silliness of it.
I like owning the idea moreso than a parts matching special variant.
Anonymous No.64082802 >>64082858

It's a decent price. School rifles are generally mismatched. They were probably cannibalizing parts to make complete guns. The parts were also originally matched with an assembly number and not the serial number. Pic related. Though, rebuilds can be matched with the serial number. It's complicated at times.
>>64082709
School rifles aren't the same thing as trainers. Trainers are purpose built guns made of pot metal that are just meant to fire blanks/wooden bullets. School rifles are real rifles taken out of service and given to schools. The trainers were more for younger children, while the school rifles were more for high school and university students.

25,000 rifles from Kokura's 25th γƒ° series and Nagoya's 27th γ‚ͺ series were sent as aid to Thailand. They were all factory fresh and the mums were all cancelled like that at the factory. The Thai's called it the Type 83. They also had their Type 66, but that was a contract in their own caliber. They were an emergency buy because of the Franco-Thai war IIRC. I don't even think the Thais used them that much.

Another sign that it was a Thai rifle is the fact that it's not in the US as they were sold when we couldn't import military guns so most are in Europe or Canada.

I couldn't find the number on the foregrip you mentioned but I was also a bit pressed for time and the owner was away at a gun show and he's the only one allowed to put stuff in the books so I couldn't take it home today

The Japanese would not renumber the bolt like that. And again, no Type 99 had long enough service life to warrant any sort of rebuilding. I personally think the other numbers looked good in the pictures, but I am always extra paranoid when I see a renumbered bolt like that.

The number I was talking about is on the inside of the forestock. The number is usually where the locating pin sticks in, so you can usually see the numbers in there, or at least some of them. It's kinda a hidden spot most people don't know about.
Anonymous No.64096670 >>64096689

Since the Safety knob and firing pin match each other so i'd make a guess to say thats probably the original numbers for the bolt due to them just throwing all the bolts into a pill and losing them so maybe the GI that brought it back had the means to renumber it for the sake of looking nice.

i have 70 surps
i know their type, ammo, history and in which locker they are
i want to keep em angry and aggressive
so they dont lose their fighting spirit
i want the rifles to keep their will to kill
so i put the israeli haganah k98 next to the bnz ss k98
enfeld next to ishapore smle
m39 sako next to tula m91/30 snajper
arisaka next to springfield
steyr next to carcano
berthier next to mauser
chile m1895 next to 1909 argentino
everytime i open the gun locker i inhale that sweet sweet scent of hatred
i love it
any idea what i could put next to my swiss and swede rifles in that regard?
can i piss off a swedish mauser with a norge kongsberg k98?

I don't have that problem (yet) but that's how I keep track of my wants, on paper. See something neat and funky, write it down. Helps my memory take and stick if nothing else. You should have a list of gun, markings (as stamped), and S/N anyways just in case shit gets stolen or something. I might go through the whole collection and type each gun on a single line in MS Word or something first. Then alphabetize and make categories that would make sense for your own convenience; by country, by gun (mauser category), whatever. Then print or write as you have it. Hard copies > digital, IMO. Hard drives die. Files get corrupted (I have pics from this site that are like 10+ y/o that won't open anymore). Computers get destroyed or the PSU fries shit. 2 is 1, 1 is none. Have copies. And pencil won't fade like ink (but it can smear).

Maybe even hide some info papers under buttplates and handguards if you're really paranoid. Had an old 22 come like that once, took the rifle out of the stock and a little paper fell out. It was one of the previous owner's info cards using one of those cheap personalized name&address w/ clip art stickers you'd get in a huge pack for sticking on envelopes before mailing them. I don't even know if that's a thing anymore lol. There was also one under the buttplate. I think if the thing had an upper handguard he'd have hidden one there too. In my paranoia it'd have to be archive grade paper and pen, though. Doesn't help you if the paper crumbles to dust or it makes your gun rust.

List, I wouldn't bother with archive paper; should have more than one copy anyways. Little notes in the guns, yeah probably. It was kinda funny taking apart that 22 for cleaning and repair, though. Like fucking confetti under every part lol. Probably overkill but I think archive printer paper isn't pricey, and neither are archive quality pens (Sakura and Prismacolor come to mind) but then again, pencil is cheaper and can't fade lol.

You can expand the height of single rows if you have pics to insert. I'd make an example but my Windows hard drives are fuuuuuucked. You'd basically be making a chart. Column A is make (ie. Mauser), column B is caliber, column C is S/N, column D is country, column E is etc. (description), column F is pics (widen this one horizontally). Then any gun that has pics or a description you'd make that row taller. Say your Arisaka is on row 12, you make that taller to account for the description and pic. If every one has pics, you simply make that standard with a template which IIRC you can do. Else select the first like 50 rows and change the height all at once. Too many columns or too wide and it does become a bitch to print though.

sorta. the one pictured is still even just a bit longer than a riot length. there isnt really a difference if the model is a takedown or not

Nearly ALL "riot length" guns you'll find are cut downs of varying quality. A verifiable police issued one is about as rare and even more expensive than a true military marked trench one.

If you plan to trench gun a riot length 1897, you will need to cut/grind off the bead (assuming whoever cut it bothered to put one on)

Depends on the condition. There are many Argie 1891s that were kept in storage as war reserve and never issued before being sold as surplus. They are in immaculate condition, all serials matching, but they will have the national seal cresting the receiver ring defaced as per Argentine government surplus policy at the time. Conversely, there are very beat-up 1891s (usually carbines) that were in service for much longer and were sold off after the rule on defacing national seals was lifted, which means they have their crests but are often in much worse overall condition. Figure ~$5-600 for a -condition matching rifle or carbine that has been scrubbed, or one that hasn't been scrubbed but is more used and mis-matched. I know there's an Anon here who paid $2K for his matching M91 long rifle w/crest.

Hard to tell much from just looking st the bolt face, but that doesn’t look unusually corroded/eroded from leaking primers and the extractor claw looks in good shape. Firing pin tip can be checked by putting the safety in the vertical position and unscrewing the striker assembly from the bolt body. M1909s were surplussed after the scrubbing of crests ended and are usually in matching condition.

modern factory ammo is superior in performance and no salty primers means less cleaning. steel cases are shite, they split, they fuck up ejectors.
although, modern ammo is not that long term storable like canned 7,62x54r or double sealed gp11.
the more moist your land is, the worse.
factory ammo which is non sealed (laquer seal for primers, wax for bullet/case rim) should be fired within 10-15 years. an everglades area florida ladd once pulled the bullets on his ppu lebel from 20 yrs ago which he had stored in the shed at his makeshift garden range.

Is the rifling itself worn, or is there damage near the muzzle? If the rifling is worn to the point its impacting accuracy, a counterbore isn't going to do anything. Counterboring is done to more or less remove damaged/pitted rifling near the muzzle, which is where damaged rifling would affect accuracy the most. Example, I've got a Type 24 Mauser that is counterbored, but its rifling is otherwise so worn down in the rest of the barrel that I can't reliably expect it to hit a torso sized target beyond 75 yards.

Also just added the single wrap of copper wire (16ga. I believe it was) around the handguard and under the barrel with a few twists of the wire. My stock and handguard are inletted for it, so it does fit, and I enjoy how it looks. Does your carbine shoot well?

In that case, here's my recommendation for you. First give the bore a good scrub with a brass brush and some solvent. Sometimes carbon build up can look like pitting when you're only looking down it with a light instead of a borescope. Then do pic related if you haven't already. If you can still see brass and the entire bullet isn't getting swallowed to the casing like in my pic, good news is your rifling still has life left in it. If you go to the range and it groups like shit even though the bullet tip wasn't entirely swallowed by the muzzle, I'd then say try to get a counterbore done. If the muzzle swallows the entire bullet tip AND it groups like shit, it'd be more cost effective to try and re-barrel the thing at that point if you really want it to be a decent shooter.

If you can still see some of the brass you're fine for at least a while, shows that when that bullet is getting pushed through the barrel when fired, it will engage the rifling. Keep in mind that some manufacturers use different bullet diameters despite the caliber being the same otherwise. Example, I've done muzzle tests with two different brands of 9x19mm. One brand had its bullet getting swallowed much deeper before stopping than the other. The "bullet tip in muzzle" thing isn't an exact science, and is more of a way to get you a general idea of whether or not normal wear to the rifling is gonna be a cause for accuracy problems you might notice. It's also a test that also can't be done on rifles that are counterbored already. If you want a truly accurate assessment how worn your rifling is you'd want a dedicated muzzle wear gauge. Unfortunately I don't think anyone makes muzzle gauges for 54R.

Realizing I read that wrong, I'm tired and it's past midnight here. If it's swallowing it to the start of the brass/casing, yeah your rifling is pretty fucking worn regardless of ammo brand. There's a possibility it might still shoot accurately enough for you to have fun with it, but that's not gonna last for a super long time and if you're noticing accuracy problems as it is now, that'd be why.

Do you mean there's no rifling near the muzzle? If you shine a light down the barrel from the muzzle end, is it entirely smooth before it hits a sort of "step" where the rifling starts from that point? If that's the case your rifle has already been counterbored and the bullet tip test isn't gonna do you any good, because the bullet can't even reach the rifling from the muzzle end.

most rifles have good accuracy
some more, some less, some exeptional more
but shit ergonomy
for getting that accuracy out of the gun, there are 2 factors:

1. rifle in good condition in the most essentital parts (crown!, sights, rifling, stock no cracks)

2. sights are made for accuracy shooting.
goodbye arisaka, carcano, if you have shitty eyes say goodbye to m95s, k98 and all other pyramid front post/v-notch sighted rifles.

you want sightwise a peep or a u-notch with a zylindrical/rectangular front post. or good eyes.
whats left?
all the swiss
enfields no4, p17, p17
all the swedes exept m94
mosin nagant. but only finnish m39, m28, m27 or m24
norwegian k98 fly-haer-ΓΆvg etc. kongsberg 30-06, these have a u-notch and rectangular front post

if you have good eyes:
long 98 mausers
most k98, but only the first 5-10 shots, then it wanders

most guns point of impact starts to wander when hot. k31, m39 are the only ones which almost do not wander known to me.
k98 are notorious fpr big shifts in point of impact when hot.
protip: you shoot your gun hot when searching for point of impact. when you found the point gun is hot... and shit accuracy is experienced.
wait for it to cool and try again.

I think much of the "is of inaccurate" posting comes from people slinging the cheapest steel case when reloads will produce good accuracy

a3 yes stupid me forgot, a1 no-ish, sightline quite short.
the m1903 and the smle have quite a narrow front post, hard to see for the shit eyed.
no experience with ross, but i believe it.

i also forgot the berthiers, if you manage the sights they are very accurate.
and very friendly for shyte shooters eyes, since they literally have a glock sight picture.

absolutely agree BUTT: the standard m91/30s behave like k98 mausers when hot, wander a lot. on the other hand, the fully finned finns always stay constantly on target.
Finned triggers are superior too. way superior.

and with different riggers it shows, how much of a bitch muscle memory is.
shooting after a nice trigger (f.i. swiss) with a shit trigger (russian original nagant) is like drinking the plastic bottle cuveΓ© after the blue bordeaux. it feels wrong and is distasteful.

The USMC "No.10" circular aperture was 0.1". The standard M1905 rear sight aperture was 0.05", but actually armorer's spares were supposed to be available from 0.04" to 0.1" so it could be adjusted to fit the individual soldier. I'm not sure how common the larger apertures were, but two of my M1903s came with "No.6" (0.06") circular apertures. The USMC sight set eliminated all but the 0.1" circular aperture –no more "Christmas tree"–. With the much taller front sight blade the zero for the "battle sight" is now 200yds.

What I don't know is if there was ever any official modification to enlarge the "battle sight" on the slide cap. It doesn't appear to have been modified in a period archival photo I have of the sight set. However at least one original example does have the slide cap modified in such a manner, but it might have just been done by a previous owner. Since I had a spare slide cap, I enlarged the "battle sight" aperture to 0.1" to match the circular peep. For reference, the original "battle sight" notch is 0.05" just like the standard circular peep.

I got into milsurp when I was dirt poor. There are always deals to be had you just need to hustle to find them.

Go make friends with old people, they likely bought their guns in the 70s for pennies and if they were successful in life then they don't care about the money and will sell you things cheap if they like you.

Also scope ALL of your local gun and pawn shops, sometimes people end up in a tight spot and sell things below market so they can pay bills.

Check or attend small auctions, and look for mislabeled lots. Study gun books and learn about rare makers/markings/variants and may just find rare stuff thats labeled vaguely or incorrectly and hit a home run.

If you're really really poor, then start scrounging up parts and build your guns from scratch. I've done this and have friends that have as well.

....or as other anon said, get into Carcanos, Vetterlis, Spanish anything or whatever is cheapest at the moment. Mosins were worthless 20 years ago but have value now because all of us (then) poorfags bought them up since its all we could afford and now theres actual interest in them and they have value.

Unironically this is the reason why the housing market is so fucked these days. Boomers charging out of their ass for their homes only for another boomer to come and buy it. Poetic as in boomers eating each other, that said until the last one standing drops dead.

we've seen glimpses of it but it never lasts. at the end of the day, all of the pre-vietnam milsurp is still relatively limited in supply and that gets smaller every year through losses and yet population and popular culture ensure that demand keeps rising. Mega collectors dying off can cause prices to dip in a for a given period, but as soon as they dry up the things shoot right back. Already seeing M41s and G41s start to climb again after they dipped last year. Lugers are creeping up again although for reasons I cant explain, Artillery lugers are still way down (so buy one now if you can).

Nugget stocks are usually varnished, not oil finished. For a modern finish that looks fairly similar to the original and is cheap and easy, I'd just go with clear polyurethane. The spray cans are easy and one can is more than enough to do a stock. Or you could do boiled linseed oil. I wouldn't bother with actual gun stock oil or other fancy/expensive finishes because it's a nugget.
