Got a matching Type 2 Paratrooper rifle for $1650 today life is good (Mum ground off but not paying $1,000 extra for it on)

>Tell us the story of the Surp that got away.
I passed on 900 rounds of 8mm mauser for $300 but 2 months later I saw the guy again and bought it so not really a get away moment

My boomer hate story is a boomer at Tusla making fun of me (18 at the time) for not being $5,000+ to "A gun show like this" and a more recent one was 2 boomers making fun of me for only bringing my gun to show off to people

>2 boomers making fun of me for only bringing my gun to show off to people
This is also fair game to make fun of you BUT it depends on the setting. Was there a space/time or is it a place were show and tell is a thing, or did you just kinda bring a gun to a gunshow to talk about it? essentially you were a walking "display only" which is dumb, unless it was a really cool gun. I woulda chatted you up too depending on what it was.

successfully got everything rear of the turret out of my $90 zeiss zielvier project and straightened the reticle post with tweezers.

but the crosshair is still quite dirty, lots of gunk on it. Anyone have ideas on a way to clean it?

its a german #5 with the wire so thin i couldnt even see it. but thankfully its the posts with gunk on them.

Someone has renumbered the bolt body. They even numbered it upside down to boot.

When you get it, I would go over all the other numbers more closely, but I suspect it's fine. There is a hidden number on the forestock that you can usually partially see in the hole for the pin that lines up the two halves.

I've seen several in person and a few on Legacy and gun broker go for ~$2000 so for $1650 I'm pretty happy with it

I'm definitely gonna hold onto it for awhile but I might bring it to Tusla to trade for stuff if I find something I REALLY want

I really wanted an early Koishikawa model of Type38 but I could not afford it at the time so I just watched it until it was sold to someone else and I felt strangely relieved after that. Like the temptation is finally gone. I'm free. I still have my Type30 and Nagoya Type38.

Maybe you can answer me, not sure if I got a good price or not since the numbers seem wonky.
I purchased a S marked barrel Koishikawa 38 that was decommissioned as a training rifle as far as I can tell. (The mum is present with a circle of 0's around the edge. Also has a ๆ–‡ kanji after the ไธ‰ๅ…ซๅผ)
I don't think the bolt numbers match in any way, it also only has 4 digits that I don't see anywhere else on the rifle.

Paid 275 freedom bucks on a whim. I'll have to pay that much in 6.5 now though just to enjoy it I reckon.

I have no idea about the price, I'm europoor and I'm too lazy to do the neccesary math, but it seems that you've got yourself a trainnig rifle that has been deemed unworthy of military service. Be aware of the danger. Inspect the shit out of it before you shoot.

I was just browsing online for a couple examples, the training rifles are pretty common and just mean they refit parts and used it not in combat. It should still be functional and "safe".
Mine seems to be pretty Frankensteined with a sporterized stock, a slightly chopped barrel, and some aftermarket sights.
I'm not a big milsurp guy at all, so I'll just enjoy the silliness of it.
I like owning the idea moreso than a parts matching special variant.

It's a decent price. School rifles are generally mismatched. They were probably cannibalizing parts to make complete guns. The parts were also originally matched with an assembly number and not the serial number. Pic related. Though, rebuilds can be matched with the serial number. It's complicated at times.
>>64082709
School rifles aren't the same thing as trainers. Trainers are purpose built guns made of pot metal that are just meant to fire blanks/wooden bullets. School rifles are real rifles taken out of service and given to schools. The trainers were more for younger children, while the school rifles were more for high school and university students.

If you're a Europoor, that Nagoya is probably a Thai used Type 38.

25,000 rifles from Kokura's 25th ใƒฐ series and Nagoya's 27th ใ‚ช series were sent as aid to Thailand. They were all factory fresh and the mums were all cancelled like that at the factory. The Thai's called it the Type 83. They also had their Type 66, but that was a contract in their own caliber. They were an emergency buy because of the Franco-Thai war IIRC. I don't even think the Thais used them that much.

Another sign that it was a Thai rifle is the fact that it's not in the US as they were sold when we couldn't import military guns so most are in Europe or Canada.

Type 2 came in today and itโ€™s really nice looking. It actually came with a repro sling, dust cover and original cleaning rod which wasnโ€™t shown on the pictures which is nice however I couldnโ€™t find the cuff for the sling so I might need to go buy one. Bore looks great as well. Only downside is since the dust cover is a repro it doesnโ€™t really fit on properly and I can turn on the safety with it on the gun

Just got mine (released from gay jail) today too.
$515 for fake grips and one repro or post-war magazine but also one original mag. Bore is ok.
Looking into it, everything else seems correct and in good working order. Iโ€™m not generally into handguns but Iโ€™m not gonna let fate fuck me twice. Iโ€™m happy.

Still thinking about that $700 1887 though

Everything matched besides the firing pin and safety knob, I could see what you mean by the bolt getting renumbered (it's a lot easier to see it in person but idk what the original numbers were) but who knows if that was Japan that did it or someone else.
I couldn't find the number on the foregrip you mentioned but I was also a bit pressed for time and the owner was away at a gun show and he's the only one allowed to put stuff in the books so I couldn't take it home today
>Finding a Type 99 that doesn't have at least a very good or excellent bore would be quite the find. None really had long service lives.
To be fair the only other jap gun I had's barrel was completely worn out but that was due to the boomers that owned it before me leaving it looking literally like a sewer pipe and neglecting the shit out of it. Luckily I sold it to another boomer for the same price I payed cause "Its got that there mum on it sonny that means a GEE EYE took it home in his bag!" lmao

The Japanese would not renumber the bolt like that. And again, no Type 99 had long enough service life to warrant any sort of rebuilding. I personally think the other numbers looked good in the pictures, but I am always extra paranoid when I see a renumbered bolt like that.

The number I was talking about is on the inside of the forestock. The number is usually where the locating pin sticks in, so you can usually see the numbers in there, or at least some of them. It's kinda a hidden spot most people don't know about.

Since the Safety knob and firing pin match each other so i'd make a guess to say thats probably the original numbers for the bolt due to them just throwing all the bolts into a pill and losing them so maybe the GI that brought it back had the means to renumber it for the sake of looking nice.

Is a mosin 44 carbine worth $450 if the rifling at the muzzle looks a bit worn away? I'm guessing it's a 44 carbine based off the bayonet mount, but I'm bringing a tape measure tomorrow to see how long the barrel is when I look at it again. Tag says m91, but that doesn't mean crap. I don't have that problem (yet) but that's how I keep track of my wants, on paper. See something neat and funky, write it down. Helps my memory take and stick if nothing else. You should have a list of gun, markings (as stamped), and S/N anyways just in case shit gets stolen or something. I might go through the whole collection and type each gun on a single line in MS Word or something first. Then alphabetize and make categories that would make sense for your own convenience; by country, by gun (mauser category), whatever. Then print or write as you have it. Hard copies > digital, IMO. Hard drives die. Files get corrupted (I have pics from this site that are like 10+ y/o that won't open anymore). Computers get destroyed or the PSU fries shit. 2 is 1, 1 is none. Have copies. And pencil won't fade like ink (but it can smear).

Maybe even hide some info papers under buttplates and handguards if you're really paranoid. Had an old 22 come like that once, took the rifle out of the stock and a little paper fell out. It was one of the previous owner's info cards using one of those cheap personalized name&address w/ clip art stickers you'd get in a huge pack for sticking on envelopes before mailing them. I don't even know if that's a thing anymore lol. There was also one under the buttplate. I think if the thing had an upper handguard he'd have hidden one there too. In my paranoia it'd have to be archive grade paper and pen, though. Doesn't help you if the paper crumbles to dust or it makes your gun rust.

List, I wouldn't bother with archive paper; should have more than one copy anyways. Little notes in the guns, yeah probably. It was kinda funny taking apart that 22 for cleaning and repair, though. Like fucking confetti under every part lol. Probably overkill but I think archive printer paper isn't pricey, and neither are archive quality pens (Sakura and Prismacolor come to mind) but then again, pencil is cheaper and can't fade lol.

You can expand the height of single rows if you have pics to insert. I'd make an example but my Windows hard drives are fuuuuuucked. You'd basically be making a chart. Column A is make (ie. Mauser), column B is caliber, column C is S/N, column D is country, column E is etc. (description), column F is pics (widen this one horizontally). Then any gun that has pics or a description you'd make that row taller. Say your Arisaka is on row 12, you make that taller to account for the description and pic. If every one has pics, you simply make that standard with a template which IIRC you can do. Else select the first like 50 rows and change the height all at once. Too many columns or too wide and it does become a bitch to print though.

Like this. And you can even make a "price" column and a "date" column and do some funny shit like charts keeping track of total cash spent over time and gun count over time (bad idea lol I don't want to think just how much I spent on my hunting rifle alone). "Month" would be gun type/name. "Product 1" would be country. "Product 2" would be caliber, etc.

Yeah I can reliably put groups on a pie plate at 250yd with me my 1928 91/30 slinging 150gr PPU soft points. I realize that's not hyper-accuracy buy it's about as much as you can ask of a nearly 100yr old mass-produced surp rifle& it's more than adequate for hunting

Yes, Romanian M1893 stuck in a Dutch KNIL M95 stock. All remaining Romanian parts are matching. Iโ€™ll never find an original Romanian stock so either I modify this one to fit or have a repro made. For what I paid I figured itโ€™s worth restoring.

sorta. the one pictured is still even just a bit longer than a riot length. there isnt really a difference if the model is a takedown or not

Nearly ALL "riot length" guns you'll find are cut downs of varying quality. A verifiable police issued one is about as rare and even more expensive than a true military marked trench one.

If you plan to trench gun a riot length 1897, you will need to cut/grind off the bead (assuming whoever cut it bothered to put one on)

This is a takedown. The barrel comes off if you push the pin at the end of the magazine tube and rotate the mag tube, pull the tube out and then rotate the whole barrel/tube assembly which then comes out. Model 12s have the exact same mechanism

Get a Norwegian krag to go with your Swede. There was so much petty beef with that rifle that allegedly Norway changed the tolerances of the 6.5x55 swede ammo they produced and the Krag itself so that despite being in the same chamber, all Swedish made 6.5x55 ammo would be compatible in Norwegian krags but Norwegian manufactured ammo could not be used in Swedish 6.5 chambered guns

IIRC some ZFK55s which were scoped marksman rifles with an FG42 style brake were put on a boat, which was then marked as having an accident of some sort, with the cargo being lost. Which was then recovered by the new state of Israel, who was taking literally all it could get. I am too tired to look up the full story but that should be enough to get you going on google.

>How much is too much for an argentine infantry mauser 91?
Depends on the condition. There are many Argie 1891s that were kept in storage as war reserve and never issued before being sold as surplus. They are in immaculate condition, all serials matching, but they will have the national seal cresting the receiver ring defaced as per Argentine government surplus policy at the time. Conversely, there are very beat-up 1891s (usually carbines) that were in service for much longer and were sold off after the rule on defacing national seals was lifted, which means they have their crests but are often in much worse overall condition. Figure ~$5-600 for a -condition matching rifle or carbine that has been scrubbed, or one that hasn't been scrubbed but is more used and mis-matched. I know there's an Anon here who paid $2K for his matching M91 long rifle w/crest.
>what should I check when buying one?
Matching serial numbers, bore condition, stock condition. The usual.

My bad, it's a 1909 Mauser, not a 1891 one.

It's first time buying a surplus rifle by the way, and my local gun store just got one for sale and looks good.

what about the firing ping and extractor? Pic related, at least the were kind enough to post pics from both the bore and the bolt.

Hard to tell much from just looking st the bolt face, but that doesnโ€™t look unusually corroded/eroded from leaking primers and the extractor claw looks in good shape. Firing pin tip can be checked by putting the safety in the vertical position and unscrewing the striker assembly from the bolt body. M1909s were surplussed after the scrubbing of crests ended and are usually in matching condition.

Thanks anon, I will try to visit the gun store and check it myself, hope another guy doesn't snitch it before I get there, just like the USP9 I wanted.

Hopefully by the end of the week I will own my first surplus rifle.

I'm going to my first gun show in over 6 months on Saturday. It probably won't be very good (low population in my state) but I've gotten decent things and rarer ammo there before.

Hopefully welcome to the club.
Also, just for thread conversation, what was the last good local deal you all got on Surp? pic related is the matching Spanish 1893 I got a couple months ago for $550 with faint English words on the stock, I'm pretty sure its a Spanish-American War capture.
