/k/ Westerns?
Any recommendations on /k/ approved westerns?

I love old school gun nerd shit that isn't fuddlore or myth. Accurate technical discussions and scenes in movies on firearms of the time, seems to be a rarity in films but it does occur. I found an archive of some kind of gun newspaper/magazine from the late 1800s a few years ago that had lots of 1800s /k/ talk that wasn't just a exaggerated shakespearean sales pitch like most gun literature from the time. For the life of me I can't remember what it was called. Fascinating stuff learning about gun nerdery of the late 1800s

Unforgiven is pretty good, and one that doesn't come up too often is Tall Tale. It's a kids movie, but whoever was the armorer for that movie was a firearms nerd and included the C96 Mauser and Merwin & Hulbert revolvers.

If you want a gritty, realistic depiction of living in the west, "Unforgiven" is peak. If you like action and drama, then "Tombstone" is peak. If you've already seen the two best Western films ever made, then there are a few other ones you could enjoy:
The good, the bad, and the ugly
Open Range
True Grit (both versions are fun)

NTA but, Imagine paying such little attention to the movie that you never realize an integral plot point: they weren't natives; they were troglodytes (mountain people that had spent so much time away from civilization that they lost their humanity). They'd kidnap white women and rape them.

As for why the movie sucks, it has an unbearably slow pacing (3% of the movie is action, and most of it was when the troglodytes split their male hostage in half) only to reach the end, and there's no payoff; we didn't even see the injured sheriff finish off the troglodyte reinforcements. In addition, all the characters are shallow and their backstories plain; the only character I liked was the racist guy who was proud of hunting down natives in his youth.

I think it really depends on what you define as a western. Bone Tomahawk is a horror movie set in the West, but I would not call it a western. Is a western any movie set west of St Louis? Or does it have to about specific themes?

I love Wind River but I would disagree that it is a neo western, the plot isn't such that it could be set in other locations without really changing much.

Conversely, Outland IS a Western. I mean it's a remake of High Noon yeah, but it deals with themes specific to Western stories about law and justice and whether people follow the law because they earnestly believe in it or simply because the risk of punishment from those above them deters them?

Assault on Precient 13 is also a Western because of this IMO. Same for Zulu, where you could swap the Brits for US Cavalry and the Zulus for the Commanche.

To add my own, if you can find a 70mm screening of the director's cut of Heaven's Gate, yeah, it really is that fucking good.

Also check out Osterns, Soviet Western movies. White sun of the Desert unironically a really fun movie.

The Verde Valley/Sedona/Oak Canyon/Flagstaff area is so small but has such a hugely diverse amount of landscape features. Honestly the drive from Phoenix to Flagstaff on the 17, once you get past Sunset Crater and the 69 as far as traffic goes, is pound for pound one of the best scenic routes you can do in 2 hours.

Pro tip, leave Flagstaff early before dawn, head south on the 17 right to the edge of the elevation where the emergency truck egress/scenic overview is. Stop, pull out a chair, and watch the sun rise over the mountains.

I cant find any photo online that does it justice, sadly. Try and do it on a cold crisp fall or winter morning, then head back into Flagstaff and grab breakfast at Maci's.

My only issues with the scenes are Ike coming back to shoot at them (Which almost certainly did not happen) , Frank McLaury not trying to get his Winchester 1873 from his Horse and failing until he wandered into the street and all the scenes where they are shooting more than six times , or so it seems since they might be the same shot from multiple angles .And I loved that they find a way to fuse multiple accounts , like Holliday and Morgan Earp both shooting Frank and killing him .

Overall , it is the most accurate retelling of the Fremont Street shooting and of the Earp-Cowboy rivalry (Though that is not saying much , considering the competition) .

TGTBATU is a monumental epic, I won't deny that. It almost feels like a medieval questing movie like the search for the Holy Grail. The characters seem more like representations of sins or virtues or angels or devils. The graveyard itself almost seems to be this fabled mythical location, no one around them but the crows cawing, like some ancient temple to the Gods. The last 10 minutes of that movie more than anything else take it from "damn this is a really good western" to "this is one of the best fucking things of all time."

But Volonte in A Few Dollars More is such a stronger villain and maybe the best 'villain' in anything that isn't Unforgiven. He's someone sadistic and evil but also seems fully self aware of how damned he is and it leaves him in this state of being haunted over his decisions. In the climax even before [redacted] shows up, that look he gives van Cleef is so nuanced and tortured. You almost feel sorry for him, not necessarily in that moment, but more that it seems like he could have been better. I think it's better than Heath Leger's Joker only in that the cynicism and nihilistic veneer has enough cracks that you see what sort of a person would pretend to be like that underneath and it is haunting.

I talked about it last time but I unironically think 90s Trigun is a great pairing with High Noon. I know Stampede is more manga accurate and not bad, but embodies much more of anime tropey stuff in general. The first half of the 90s series isnt really as narrative focused or serious as the 2nd half, but I think it is just as important for establishing Vash's morality and approach to conflicts.

If you view Vash and Knives not just as archetypes of white hat/black hat cowboys but as weapons themselves, there is a good, simple, theme of the 90s adaptation I love. Vash is the best example of the Superman archetype IMO because it does take the time to establish his own worldview and then actually shows you what the cost of it is. He can't save everyone and even his best-case scenarios do have casualties. But when pushed to violating his own code, you also see the toll it takes on him physically and mentally. It also deals with justice and redemption and whatnot like High Noon, but in an equal and opposite way. Vash isn't asking people to stand with him like Gary Cooper and fight, it is the opposite. But both implicitly and explicitly shame the bystanders for not doing more to make the world a better place. In the end, Gary Cooper walks away and drops his badge. But in the end of 90s Trigun, he not only doesn't kill the person responsible for literally everything, but he carries him back in his arms because he fully believes anyone can be redeemed and given a chance to do good. In a very weird way this space western about plant people who can turn their arms into guns has one of the most strongly "Christian" messages about optimism and trying to see the best even in your worst enemy. It outright says doing so won't just be hard but it will be far harder than taking shortcuts and compromising your own morality which leads you down an ends-justify-the-means path. But it is still worth doing.

Ethnic Asian here, I can explain that

It's because we really admire Christianity and missions to the Orient did a lot of charity work
In contrast, Buddhism and Shintoism has never had much of a charity aspect as an organisation. (This is changing now as their religious organisations copy the Christian model). They preached charity but never did it themselves, and therefore were seen as imposing a service and rules rather than practising what they preached, literally
That's also why you see a lot of nuns and stuff in HK dramas and movies. Anime and film-makers are well aware that they signal morality and charity to the viewer.

Frankly, the rate the Anglo nations are going, I think the last true bastions of Christianity are in the East

However,

In the particular case of this anime it might simply be the classic Japanese "you don't defeat the enemy by killing him, but by helping him" trope which goes all the way back to at least the Edo period.

That makes sense. One thing I find interesting relative to comics or even how they view politics/racism/nationalism is that religion is almost given respect. Even when it is the bad guys or a sham. You can have a stark raving trump expy or super african man with giant lips but if they pray or go to a temple, there won't be any jokes about faith itself. Reminds me of Royal Space Force. I know people in the west hate a specific scene and it isn't the best, sure, but a lot of that is specific to Japanese culture and how even now women apologize for being victims sometimes. Also Tokyo Godfathers, a movie I am not ashamed to admit makes me cry every time I watch it (the stuff where the daughter realizes her dad literally just wants to make sure she is safe + the dad doing everything he can to find her), has a really nuanced and well rounded depiction of the tenets of western religion in it. Meanwhile the Garth Ennis and Alan Moore types seem to outright mock religion itself with very few positive portrayals in western media.

Virtually all Western media is liberal and liberals hate Christianity. It's their very raison d'etre: liberalism is essentially politicised and practical Crowleyist Wicca - "anything shall be permissible if it does no harm" [harm being defined by ourselves]

Leaving that aside however
>Even when it is the bad guys or a sham. You can have a stark raving trump expy or super african man with giant lips but if they pray or go to a temple, there won't be any jokes about faith itself
The inherent respect for any kind of faith is much higher in the East, except in Commie China for obvious reasons.
Other than that, they WILL call out hypocrisy in a villain, but the trope is often used as "heart of gold" or "redeeming factor". For a villian to really disrespect the gods is often used as a "kick the dog" or "tempting fate" moment.

I thought China, Mao/post mao doctrinal shift aside, was more libertarian wrt religion. Not in a government is hands off way but like "YOU can be individually spiritual and devout in your own private life all you want, but don't try to get anyone else into your religion, dont organize beyond basement gatherings, and NEVER do anything publicly. But I suppose like CHristianity during the isolation period in Japan, it was "if it can't spread in the open, it will never get big enough to challenge us."

Thanks for explaining that anon. Now that I think about it, you have a very valid point. I can think of a ton of anime that have Buddhist or Shinto characters and themes, and while they often they often portray religious characters as opponents to demonic/evil forces, and they even sometimes sacrifice themselves for others, they don't really ever show any kind of charitable angle.

Anime often combines the two.
As another example, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna. The majority of the plot of the games/shows follow that trope hard. The main character's list of powerful allies is huge, and they were all (but one) former enemies that were subsequently befriended. But then at the same time they stick obvious crucifixion imagery in there, the MC is simultaneously incredibly powerful yet desperately wants to avoid killing, etc. The interesting twist that's different from Vash is that here we see what happens when the Christ character gets pushed a bit far and doesn't have to fight, but snaps, delivering swift and brutal justice. Though we do see it with Wolfwood.

It's not as directly inherent as in Christianity. Buddhism said "do no harm to any living creature", but Jesus said "help the poor". See the difference? One is passive, the other is active.

>>64095753
>I thought China, Mao/post mao doctrinal shift aside, was more libertarian
No, there's a lot of persecution against Christianity in China, more than against Buddhism or traditional Chinese folk religion, because once again, active vs passive. Christians are called to spread the Word; Buddhists are called only to obey and meditate. Commie China can accept the latter but the former is a potential cultural and political threat and must be suppressed.

This is because religion might be used against the authorities. Every government faces the question of "what about religion?" Christianity prescribes a more active lifestyle than Buddhism, and these activities are anti-State, because Buddhism teaches that everyone does their own thing and gets their own karma in the end, but Christianity lays out a model of governance. When religious values and state actions conflict, a Buddhist is more likely to think, "eh, he'll get his karma, I don't have to worry, I'll just sort myself out". Whereas a Christian is more likely to balk, condemn such actions, and seek to deter them. Obviously for a Communist totalitarian regime like China, the former is less of a threat, yeah?

Correct. It was still dramatized, though. As most movies "based off real events" are. Out of the 5 movies that were based off the O.K Corral shootout (that I know of, there might be more that I don't know of), Tombstone is simply the most popular because it explores the event from multiple perspectives, while the other movies focus on one main character.

She wasnt a lead, just a side character.
But perhaps i should clarify, that i did ackshually like the movie, overall, as it is quite unique, and i may even rewatch it someday, though i wont bother to save it to my drive.
My issue is simply the same complaint i have for 99% of movies made past the year 2000. It has too many of the trademark hallmarks of modern jewslop.

I have to disagree. Other than the classic western themes of having sort of morally grey characters with troubled pasts, and justice etc, I think the desolation of the landscape plays a huge role in the film. If it was set in Boston or LA it would be a crime movie but not the same movie at all.

The emptiness of the landscape and isolation of the physical locations plays a huge role in the film.

Van Kilmer went so far into getting the character right that you can't help but believe he's actually dying of tuberculosis (which doc holiday was during that time). hidden secrets, he's keeping an ice cube in his mouth in every scene. this created the drawl that was so iconic for the way the character spoke. it also made certain that his character never fully close his mouth and that the jaw would hang slack. Kilmer most definitely researched Tuberculosis in order to get the appearance spot on.

You cannot judge a serial killers ethics unless you are a serial killer. You can only judge them from your separate moral stance of Christian forgiveness, and he is "unforgiven". It plays right out.
