>"$9 billion ship"
>Look inside
>$1.4 billion hull plus $1.2 billion worth of government-furnished equipment
>About $800 million more expensive than the contemporary Burke restarts
>37 Burkes have been authorized since Zumwalt was cancelled
>Instead of 37 Burkes, we could have had 29 Zumwalts for the same price
>This isn't even considering the economy of scale from building dozens of Zumwalts instead of 3
>Zumwalt is stealthier, faster, more efficient, has far greater onboard power generation, provisioned for hypersonic weapons, etc

The gun was canceled, well the ammo was and the Navy is just fielding the navy version of Dark Eagle instead.

Prove it
Provide the proof
A Zumwalt is $4bil without R&D costs
DDG-1000: $4.2 billion

DDG-1001: $3.8 billion

DDG-1002: $3.5 billion

A Burke is $2.2bil

We need standard VLS cells and powerful radars over stealth and hypersonic missiles that cost $100m+ each.

guns are dumb, it should have just been an arsenal ship loaded up with missiles. Zumwalts are the largest destroyers ever made but they have less VLS Cells than a Tichonderoga.
Anonymous No.64095005
>>64094984
Their VLS cells are physically larger and could in theory house larger/more powerful missiles, but since they're the only ships with that larger VLS cell size, no missile to date has been developed to take advantage of that increased space.

On top of that, the reason the Burkes were restarted was because they have a radar that can shoot down ICBMs. The Zumwalt can't and it would cost a shitload of money to add SPY-4 radars to those ships. The Burkes are unironically more capable for cheaper.

Flight III burkes are $2.5-3.3B

FY24's order of 2 was $6.4B or $3.2B each
FY25's order of 3 was $8.4B or $2.8B each
FY26's order is for 2 at $5.5B or $2.7B each

That's including the program costs. A Zumwalt many times more expensive no matter how you slice it.
Anonymous No.64095224 >>64097355
>>64095134
No it's not. The navy bundles the program development cost into the first ship of the class.

I agree zumwalts are still more expensive, but not by a MASSIVE amount, and it's possible zumwalt costs would've come down with a larger production order.

I also agree burkes are still a better deal even at $3.5B due to the Flight III radar and additional VLS cells.

So it loses panels sort of like submarines do? Doesn't affect the functionality of the vessel itself, but it can slightly increase detection if enough of the coating is removed and it looks unsightly.

>the reason the Burkes were restarted was because they have a radar that can shoot down ICBMs.
That's not why. That radar was developed for the Burke because Zumwalt was canceled. If zumwalt hasn't been canceled, the radar would have been developed for it instead.

The reason the Burkes were restarted is because the Navy needed destroyers and Congress said they couldn't build Zumwalts. Congress had already given approval for the Burke class so they didn't need to get it again.

>total program cost (cancelled)

>"cost per unit" = 200 elevendy bajillion / 3

Omg so expensive never msde sense everything else that got fully funded and built so much cheaper omg stupid, dumb military so idiot so much retard.

We don't need a massive number of $40M+ missiles, I'd much rather have 96 standard VLS cells and SPY-6 over 80 Mk57 VLS cells and 12 hypersonic missiles with a worse radar.

I'm glad zumwalt finally has SOME function, but we simply don't need a large number of $40M+ hypersonic missiles, especially if it came at the expense of the larger/better SPY-6 radar.
