this process should have started 10 years ago
same with aukus(if its even still alive)
and i get its just a first order but 3 ships just doesnt feel like enough.
the only way to defend australia is air and sea and if you pooled everything together we would barely be able to defend 1 side of the country let alone any of our allies in the region
but more ships means more personnel which we are also low on

also the mogami is 5,500 tons and $450mil
basically free, more displacement, cheaper, newer, less crew, faster than the anzac class it replaces
i know starting with 3 is good to really put them to the test and work out the economy of them but i kind wish they just said fuck it and bought 15 of them and replace the whole anzac frigate fleet and then some in one go

ASEV is more akin to a Flight III burke, but even larger.

Flight III Burkes are $2.5-3B each, so $3.5B for a domestic Japanese enlarged Burke isn't a bad deal.

Correct, and the biggest difference between older burkes, and older JMSDF DDGs and the new Flight III burke and ASEV is the radar.
The US has gone with SPY-6
Japan has gone with SPY-7
older burkes and older JMSDF DDGs use SPY-1D(V) from the late '90s.

The SPY-6/7 radars should provide substantial advantages over the older radars.

SPY-7 was made for the same program SPY-6 was, it's just SPY-6 was the one that got chosen.

SPY-7 is still a Lockheed Martin radar that can easily integrate into existing American collaborative combat systems.

Additionally, it's not just being used by the JMSDF for ASEV; SPY-7 is also being used by Canada for their new River-class destroyers, of which they're ordering 15.

SPY-7 itself is also a derivative of the Long Range Discrimination Radar in Alaska, and as such, a smaller modular version is going to be quite simple to integrate with existing US missile defence systems.

Pretty much, yes
2 would have been better as far as ASW is concerned but the increase in capability is incomparable with 1 from 0
The way it is nowadays, a warship without a helicopter hangar is virtually useless, because its so darn useful for all kinds of tasks - scouting, transferring cargo and personnel, launching antiship and antidrone missiles, and landing boarding teams

>Is New Mogami the Jap's primary ASW platform?
No, old Mogami were mainly for minewarfare while new Mogami is taking the role of a destroyer escorts. JMSDF primary ASW is built around the Ise class supported by Asahi and Akizuki classes.
>It isn't for Australia, which will be the Hunter class.
For Australia it will be a tier 2 frigate meaning its just gonna do most of the heavy lifting for patrols and other tasks while Hobart and Hunter will be the tier 1

Not anymore. The 4 escort flotillas are being changed to 3 surface battle groups with 2 structured around the Izumos as carrier strike groups and 1 around an Ise. The other Ise class is being sent to a a patrol defense group.

I forget the exact avenue of announcement, but it might've been the FY25 white paper since this restructure is planned to be finished by the end of FY25 which is early March of 2026. In the end it should be:
>Izumo and Kaga operating it's mixed air wing with it's escorts
>Ise or Hyuga still focusing on
>Other Ise class operating under the patrol and surveillance force likely doing a mix of ASW and operating light fixed wing drones for recon along with some OSS' and the new OPVs
>Mine warfare and amphibious transport consolidated into a sort of littoral combat fleet that focuses on everything from mine warfare to amphibious landings / transportation. Mostly structured around the Osumi's and Bungo classes with old Mogami's as the work horses
iirc one or two of the district forces are being eliminated and it's vessels redistributed as well and I think the Patrol and Surveillance group is taking over the ports. Also pic rel is missing like 1 or two Mogami's that commissioned, but is basically the whole JMSDF surface warfare fleet before the change.
