Through what means? Bridges that stay up long enough to move the number of troops required to assault/occupy a city of that size are just begging to be HIMARS'd, and it genuinely seems like any Russian amphibious AFV/marines who might be trained in this sort of thing were wasted in meat assaults long ago

would be quite retarded to do it now, when they retreated they controlled a much bigger area and had a bridge that could at least move troops on foot across.
the ukrainians did the same thing and were stuck in the suburbs of the town opposite kherson, they were a nuisance to the russians for some time but as you can guess supplying troops in these conditions is really hard.

Don’t forget that Ukrainian controlled side is some 200 meters elevated compared to Russian side and controls a large city there it will be infinitely harder to support such operation.
There likely won’t be any attempt to take it, try to control uninhabited islands resulted in β€œdisappearance” of several Russian brigades and no control of them, this one will just be much, much worse if attempted

10km a year in a localized area small enough individual houses are visible on satellite imagery isn't a steady advance. 10km a year on the entire LCC wouldn't be a steady advance.
>learn from opfor
The only lesson here is that russia is too incompetent to do anything but reduce an area to rubble and die by the thousands until they can finally get close enough to force the defenders to withdraw. They can't establish air superiority, all their bombs are being released over territory they control. They aren't using anything remotely close to infiltration tactics, they're sending out meat to die, bombing where they think the fire came from, and repeating until the fire is reduced enough for them to risk rolling forward a wave of what they consider actual soldiers.
>well they could do it to an island
Man, the thought of russia trying to take an island in the middle of a river at the tail end of their logistics train when they can't even ford a stream right next door to their own border makes Khorne's panties wet. If you thought 14:1 was a murderous casualty rate, wait until it's 140:1. They also have a finite amount of aviation. If that's the only way they have left of advancing, what happens to every other area of the front when they shift its focus?

you're making the assumption that traditional logistics apply here. if mobiks are single use items, you don't have to worry about that. just throw them forward, any of them that make it across will entrench and fight until they are out of ammo/water/food, keep repeating this until sufficient mass is built up on the other side of the river to force the Ukrainians to pull back

Mobiks aren't the ones taking ground. Mobiks are the ones dying en masse to allow the fifth or sixth or tenth wave of somewhat professional troops to creep up on bombed out ruins and claim them. It only works because constant assaults on a daily basis wear down defenders prevents rotation and resupply. If there's not that constant ground pressure the defenders can do things like relocate, reinforce, and conduct search and destroy ops on any meat still in the area. The planes can't be overhead 24/7, and trying to send trickles of men across a river is just going to give the fish AIDs. There's no "entrench and starve to death until critical mass is reached". Again, tail end of russian logistics and requires their strike aircraft to not be anywhere else on the line. The meat may be expendable but the troops that actually take and hold ground need shit like food, fuel, and ammo. They're also not going to have any heavy support with them. It also means those strike aircraft have to be based closer to the front to have any actual efficacy of time on target. While the west may be unwilling to let any good shit hit inside russia proper they have no problem with it being used in occupied territories. Remember Hotel Chornobaivka? Now imagine that every day russia tries to put planes and armaments outside Crimea. There's an extremely good reason they only fly sorties well inside their own AD envelope.

>Mobiks are the ones dying en masse to allow the fifth or sixth or tenth wave of somewhat professional troops to creep up on bombed out ruins and claim them.
bullshit. the russians have no real way of predicting when and where an infiltration will succeed. they throw trash forward, the ukrainians kill most of it with drones, but not all. the ones that got to their target position try to entrench. subsequent waves get sent to reinforce and resupply the new position, which still take heavy casualties. if the ukrainians can't kill them all in a couple of days eventually reinforcements and resupply start accumulating, allowing them to stage further attacks deeper into the rear of the forward ukrainian fighting positions, necessitating a withdrawal.

the casualty rates are too high and too random for any kind of deliberate mix to make much sense. both ukrainian and russian lines are very porous, with small, widely dispersed fighting positions. advancing is mostly a game of statistics and willingness to take heavy losses while in the rear drone operators rush to adapt and improve their respective kill rates.

With what? How would they even assemble for the operation without catching absolute hell for it? The Ukrainians would see that coming weeks out with how much prep and manpower it'd need to even have a chance at succeeding. The Russians can barely gain ground WITHOUT having to cross a little under half a mile of river to do it. A river crossing would be mass suicide for Russia and require minimal effort for Ukraine to stop.

But the French did fortify Paris, multiple times in history. They didn't in WW2 because they were deliberately trying to avoid having the city destroyed but they were already beaten at that point. Look at what the Germans did in 44-45 retreating on both fronts. Cities have always been a motherfucker to take throughout history and they have universally favored the defender. Russia has already proven they'll bomb hospitals, theaters, shopping centers, parks, cafes, and children's schools that aren't even close to the front. Or is your argument Ukraine should just retreat anytime russia gets near a city and let them do whatever they want to it?

Why doesn't Russia open up a new front and focus on the eastern part of the Kharkov region?
It really close to Russian logistic centers and it would force Ukraine to move troops away from Donetsk. Ukraine HAS to protect Kharkov and judging from their response at Vovchansk they would be committed to protecting the region

You are 'correct' but not in the way you want to be. Russia is winning but at such a slow and pathetically high cost that eventually they'll hit a point where they can't advance anymore due to losses mounting of both personnel and equipment.
>oh they'll just make more
on a crumbling economy? Sure, but that'll hit FAR harder at home when the time comes to rebuild the civilian economy
>they'll just hire/conscript more men, and they're lower or uneducated so it's a good loss
Those men work in the factories, farms, shops, civilian logistics, everything that keeps a country moving forward, and they work there BECAUSE they're lower and uneducated, because those jobs are far simpler to do than the people who do have education who won't want to work in those sectors. It's already affected the wheat industry in Russia far more then people realise, choose to realise or simply haven't seen any info on it to know.
>but russia is winning!
Yes, at a cost that isn't worth paying. Whatever 'spoils' they can get from ukraine won't offset the loss of people, equipment, infrastructure and civilian industry offset to keep the military industry going. They've bombed nearly half of what they've taken back to the fucking stone age and the other half is around the early years of the industrial age in terms of what's actually left. Many fields that were used for crops have been decimated and will likely take years to recover into a useable state, basically russia sent tens of thousands to their deaths and many thousands more on top of that to crippling injury for a bombed out hell hole that won't see any real fruit bear for years to come. And that's not even considering the potential for further civilian resistance and rebellion from the, all of a sudden for NO REASON AT ALL (being cased in feb 2022) civilian and ex-military populace having weapons, training and drive to fuck up russians. This entire war is an extreme exercise in Russian idiocy

> Russia is winning but at such a slow and pathetically high cost that eventually they'll hit a point where they can't advance anymore due to losses mounting of both personnel and equipment.
not even that
wars aren't fought to kill the other guy, they are fought to achieve goals. killing the other guy is just the cheaper way of achieving said goals compared to the alternatives.
the goals that russia set out to achieve, regime change by installing a stooge.
breaking Ukrainian identity
securing more of it's border behind defensible natural features and creating a buffer state
those can't be achieved by mere strength of arms any more
as such russia can't win this war because the goals it set out to achieve aren't possible anymore. at this point they are just digging deeper into a massive sunk cost fallacy.
it's even worse their NATO at home has been proven to be useless with the russians being unable to stop a war fought between two members.
it's achieved the inverse of what it wanted by promoting NATO expansion and they in turn have opened up an other possible invasion route straight into it's heartland.
all it can do is keep grinding ever forward paying more in blood and treasure than the ground they are taking will ever be worth. just so they can try and enforce a border that no longer serves it's purpose due to their own fuck up.
there is no more winning for them just the hope of a draw that isn't worth even a tenth of what it has cost them

Not happening. Seriously, it's just Trump posturing. he's not going to alienate Chinks over Ukraine. I was pleasantly surprised he even dared to talk badly about Monke. That's as far as he is willing to go. Notice how immidiately after his first harsh words aimed at Russia he sent Witkoff (aka Putin's cocksucker premium) to negotiate and surprise surprise Witkoff came back with "great deal": Russians keep the land, all sanctions removed, no war reparations. And Trump and his team are absolutely happy about that. Putin did the least he could, that is stopped unhinged and unrealistic rambling about Ukrainian demilitarization and that was enough for Trump's team to accept him again.

you're so silly. here ill just tell you what the current russian gameplan is, they want odesa. They want to capture odesa because doing so is a twofold benefit, for one, they then control the black sea and cut ukraine's ability to export through it, crippling its economy. Second, they then have a free transport line into moldova where their troops are stationed. This is good because you then have surrounded western ukraine, able to attack kyiv from the south, east from the dnipro, and north from belarus where they currently are massing forces, it turns ukraine into one big pincer. Dnipropetrovsk oblast is their secondary objective, capturing it gives Russia the fields where 1/3 of the worlds food gets grown. This is good because you then are responsible for feeding Africa, and whoever brings food to Africa gets to mine rare earths in exchange. Russia then has oil to sustain the war machine, food for its people (although this is secondary), and rare earth minerals for building drones. On top of all this they then have the manpower to back it up. Once Ukraine falls from having its economy crippled and its manpower drained against russian forces, as well as being surrounded militarily, Russia then is in an absolutely fine position again to attack the baltics and poland, and we have WW3

The English have been a constitutional monarchy since the 1600s, and even then, Western peasantry never plumbed the depths of the serfdom of Russia, which frankly never went away. Central and Western Europeans had a middle class by the 1500s.

They had anti ship missiles and anti ship drones within a month of the war starting. monkies got spooked due to the complete collapse of their logistics on land and actually made the correct decision to call off z-day. They then had all naval plans shelved permanently when Ukraine made a show of force and started to actually use these weapons on black sea targets.

It would have been so bad, thousands of soldiers dumped south of Odessa in the middle of the night with barely any food or equipment. Watching their transport ships the next morning get blown up by missiles one by one as they leave for more supplies. There would never be any more Russian ships.
Any survivors after two weeks of complete abandonment would high tail it to Transnistria and desert
