Should drones have machine guns or only be used for explosive delivery?

Oh geez billy, one is being done by literally any military that has any capacity to play around with drones and the other one is not, I'm sure nobody has had that genius thought that you just had and there's no fundamental issues with that idea.

Probaby a .50 bmg in single firing mode as a sniper gun for sniping high value targets. Otherwise, bombs are literally more bang for the buck.

I have yet to see a drone that looks stable enough to be a usable sniping platform. Hell, even helicopter mounted autocannons have a surprising amount of inaccuracy. I wouldn't trust anything mounted on a small aircraft to hit shit unless you are dumping hundreds of rounds or lobbing explosives at the target.

No.

It makes sense to me, a gun run with a drone makes more sense than a gun run with an A-10

If you want something dead, you drop explosives on it.
If you want to make somebody feel good about themselves while they wait for explosives to be delivered, you give them a firearm.

Huge drones are going to replace attack choopers so yes we'll see turreted autocannons on drones soon enough.

You can understand how this is different from a gun turret on an unmanned aircraft, can't you?

There's been significantly bigger drone helicopters since 2013, to say nothing of stuff like Global Hawk.

Exactly my point, some will make a simantics argument between UAVs, UCAVs drones ect. but with systems like Loyal Wingman and MQ-8 Fire Scout it's only a matter of time until we see unmanned attack choppers as they operate in high threat environments and a flying autocannon isn't going to stop being useful any time soon.

The good ones left and the tourists are here to stay.

Back to OP, a gun on a drone is cool but you take away one of the drones greatest advantages by slapping on super expensive gimbles, sensors and drives to accurately aim a gun: price.

You COULD make a super useful assassination drone with a suppressed gun for some extremely cheeky CIA goon snipes, and it WOULD be super fucking cool, and I'm SURE that someone has already developed one, but it's not your brick and mortar flying bomb that has become the new standard.

Drones should be made as scale models of WW2 fighters, equipped with 4k gun cams, and dogfight each other for my amusement.

Should be a separate vehicle with gun mounted sideways for shooting while doing pylon turns.

Half true. Guns keep the progress made by bombs and extend the duration of the effect by denying recovery and escapes.

I don't think they're meant to get close enough for ballistic weapons to be that useful.

You're better off doing AC-130 shit and utilizing it as a gunship while you circle above the target. Strafing with a drones is probably a bad idea unless your start designing them like ground attack aircraft.

Guns are great for killing one or two people but the problem is they don't scale very well. When you have to kill more than a few people it's much more efficient to use explosives.
