don't call russia a peasant society
peasant societies have revolts, rising and all sorts of (violent) protest all the time.
peasants where free farmers and many of them where small land owners. They would set up their own courts, set up schools, gather and manage funds for communal works and building churches.
A true peasant society has the ability to organize it's self from the bottom up and take action towards self improvement. The fading out and finally abandonment of serfdom as a legal concept was done by the peasants (and serfs) in the west.
Russia is a pure serf society.
and not medieval you are tied to the land but still have rights serfdom.
no russian serfs where little better than slaves.
There is no ability in their society to self organize and get things done. All you could and can do is to form a group as to petition your lord, your legal owner to do something for you. they where legally slaves until 1861 that is just two generations from the great war and the revolution. by the time of the soviet revolution they where still de facto slaves kept so by a culture and state made to keep them so. What little liberation the revolution brought was undone by Stalin. The few free years they had after the fall if communism frightened most of them so bad they where begging to be slaves again.
russia is one giant plantation where they pick hydrocarbons for massa. but massa is now just one of them aswell, slaves from bottom to top.
