Red dots
Can anyone please give me a run down on good brands / models. And what to avoid / look for.

I've been shooting for years but don't know shit about optics.

Picture related cheapo brand i bought from a random gunstore - but not very happy with it.

If youโ€™re just getting into dots start with Primary Arms, Holosun or Vortex. Thereโ€™s some cheaper SIG optics but any of those are OK for cheap shit.

Generally sig romeo or MSR is the way to go for minimum cost red dot suitable for a rifle. Holosun too, similar pricing.

If you want a prism, cheapest option suitable for rifles will be primary arms.

$200-400 you get a wide variety of things. Leupold will be in this range (around 200 for a dot iirc) and is made in USA. You can get cheaper Vortex lpvos in this range (don't get Vortex red dots). And at $400+ just get an eotech or ACOG.

Its simple. Theres Holosun, and then there's the rest. Affordable, reliable and combat proven, only reason militaries use anything else is berry compliance and being stuck in decades-old procurement contracts.

Nobody ever resells their aimpoint T2. Probably because it's good, but whatever. If you want a holosight, get an eotech.

Note if you have NVGs and plan to get a compatible dot be prepared to shell out at least an extra 300 to get something with low light settings

I own 3 rifles, one has an acog, one has irons and the third has irons with a LQD red dot. I absolutely shoot better groups with the dot than with the irons and can shoot faster with the dot too

I'll vouch for the c-more railway/slide rides, get the aluminum version. They're cheaper than others but still high quality, definitely better than any of the sig junk

best $70-125: Cyelee, Swampfox, Romeo 5

best $200-$350 with more reliability and much better glass: Holosun, Gideon, Primary Arms microprism

because most red dot review mention nod compatibility even though you can get a sub $125 red dot that's just as good as the more expensive ones if you don't care about muh nods and almost no one has nods.

Funny because I'm selling both my T2 and EXPS3 right now. Going to try something else that has more features. It seems like the major companies refuse to innovate and live off their GWOT fame.

The gold standard for poorfag dots were the holosun 403r/503r. Too bad the stupid fucks at holosun discontinued these models for the aro which are okay but downgrades from the previous gen in alot of ways. The holosun 510c is pretty good for a budget and looks good magnified if you decide to get a magnifier down the road. The aimpoint pro is also a very good dot but comes in just shy of $500. Depending on what youโ€™re mounting it on and your budget I can give you some direction.

Ive heard the latest vortex dots are actually decent. The older models kinda sucked (refresh rate of the dot was a major offender on those). In cheap dots i avoid features like shake awake.

Are red dots on shotguns a meme? If not, what's the best cheapest option?
Anonymous No.64096551 >>64096956
>>64096536
Yes and no, some people just aim though the length of the barrel and the front sight which is just a bead. Or they use easy to use combat sights like the ghost ring set up. The red dot is just like using a ghost ring but without having a rear sight, you just put dot on target and pull the trigger. There are few dots that have reticles with ballistic drop, which might be useful for slugs

Nah, they're pretty well liked by pros and trainers. There's a lot of pushback from the "beads gud enuff" crowd, but that's really just your usual fudd drivel that's still hanging out at this point since the serious use of shotguns was falling off a cliff while red dots on long guns were becoming mainstream. Dots still the ideal option like it is for pretty much any close range firearm. I couldn't give a specific rec but the usual higher end options are good to go like trijicon and aim point. People tend to go for the micros frequently used on handguns(ex RMR, ACRO) instead of the fullsize options. I've heard good things on some of the holosuns as well. I'd suggest checking out the red dot or shotgun sections on pistol-forum.com for more info, lots of good stuff there from people who shoot and train others on shotguns for a living and LE as well.

depends on what you are doing with them. if you are using it defensively or hunting turkeys or durr they are popular but they aren't popular for wing shooting even though aimpoint is trying to push them
>what's the cheapest option
sig romeo 5 is rated for 12 gauge and sig's website has a warrantee or guarantee or something and its like $125
>>64096909
yeah, which is why I said if you don't have nods just get a sig romeo, fag

it depends on what you use the shotgun for. red dots are more popular or are becoming more popular for like combat shotguns (not that anyone uses those anymore for anything but memeing) and durr and turkey hunting but it's not popular for wing shooting or clays

Holosun for cheap dot. Aimpoint for not. Vortex for cheap prism. ACOG for not. LPVOs are lame. Just get a scope and a dot instead.

Are you insane? There's literally no other optic that offers the features of the EXPS3. That thing is the ultimate night vision optic. It has zero parallax and a fuckhuge window. The battery life sucks, but that's the drawback of holographic optics.

Forget my initial question. I know the answer. You're totally crazy for wanting to sell your EXPS3.

Anonymous No.64098588 >>64100696

Those are bad because the 1x is terrible and the optic is heavy. You use an LPVO when you know you need to go from a house to a mountain side in one mission. For everything else, you want a red dot and magnifier.

lol

OP buy the cheapest $50-60+ tube, literally not even saying our brand, any is fine

Our failure rate is <~1% and on rifle optics even lower. Any pistol optic company making rifle optics is a cakewalk, you're falling for memes.

It's not even a debate since the R5 was made for Sig by Holosun, I can basically guarantee the price diff is not to step on their biggest customers' toes... They discontinued the cheap 403/503 and suddenly have a slightly different design, new mount and cost even more money.

The only thing more reliable than a random no-name tube tier optic is a electronicless prism or a fiber optic ACOG for $1000+ don't waste your money on a basic red dot tube trying to get a bit more "reliability" like seriously don't buy Feyachi and from $50 to $200 you MIGHT get 1% more reliability, MAYBE 2% if you buy a super shit brand and ling ling had a bad week. Besides Holosun doesn't cover accidental damage a bunch of the time and has a 30 BUSINESS day turnaround that's fucking 6 weeks.

Expensive tubes are snake oil if you're not shooting slipper soldiers for Uncle Sam. If you have to have a brand name, just buy a dirt cheap used eBay Vortex basic ass tube, they will warranty that thing lickity split.

Honestly this. I have one and it's fun for the once in a blue moon I actually make a point of going somewhere to shoot long range, otherwise it's a big heavy brick that sits in my closet because all the shots I ever actually take are 200 rounds or less. They'll lighten up eventually and fix the 1x problem but for now they aren't really that great.

Yeah, optics and lights are basically the only SIG things I like at this point. I got the Romeo5XDR Gen II + Juliet 5x combo on sale for $350ish a few months ago and I'm really impressed with how decent they are, and I like that the dot takes regular AAAs instead of a more specialized battery. It also was miraculously almost perfectly zeroed for my gun out of the box, but that's just a fluke.
