However the Great Purge went through the Red Army first, since it was milder in its first phases, this meant the army was spared the later excesses and was already purged by the time that Balin was really pulling out the stops, it ironically protected them from the worst of it.
Since the purge was initially just drawing a line in the sand between the Tsarist ancien régime and the revolutionary government of the Supreme Soviet, it was mostly focused on purging anyone who had studied under ancien régime dudes. This indirectly led to b&ing doctrines created or even just adopted by the white army, which unfortunately included Deep Battle and everything associated with it, which caused a lot of problems at the start of the war until the general staff were able to get everything unb& and start ordering and teaching it again.
Anyway, the purged officers and probably NCOs too, all got gulagged, with less exceptions if they were low down the pole and at least fired and house arrest but on the whole, mostly gulagged regardless.

At some point, the Red Army were able to convince even Stalin that doctrine wasn't itself anti-revolutionary or whatever and got most of the Red Army general staff un-gulagged.
They'd been in there a few years by then so more than enough time for their experiences to have shaped them and decontextualised trauma to become personality trains and on a larger scale, to become culture.

The grass looks greener on the other side. It's easy to find a beautiful picture of a place. Not even propaganda, just random pictures that someone took and posted online.
