What the heck is this stuff?
Can anybody tell me what pic related is? Found similar can in the barn. Seems to be some sort of grease, but not the healthy kind? Seems to have been used for Tanks and Artillery, sub-zero temperature stuff?
Might contain barium/lead/naphtalene or similar?

Apparently this stuff is also sold on etsy (https://www.etsy.com/mx/listing/1278490088/2-vintage-standard-oil-co-military-tins).

Can't find a lot on it, but I think its reference number may have been AXS-1169. Is from Standard Oil Company, for obvious reasons not easy to ask them without a time machine.

They say that on all lubricants from back in the era, also for other stuff.

I am not going to open random olive green cans from WW2.

It's grease, for machinery, cars, etc. "00" is the viscosity grade, that is actually quite runny as far as grease goes. It's basically old gear oil. Nothing special or weird about it.

I wouldn't either. Thankfully, this is not a "random" can, we know what should be in it. Have you never worked on a car before? You seem mystified about a very common substance.

"Sd.Kfz. 234" is a way of writing I would be more comfortable with, I did not expect it from the Americans.
Then again I did not expect the Americans to leave us a can of grease in WW2, but here we are.

ITS DDT

VERY DANGEROUS

Cancer Hazard * DDT may be a CARCINOGEN in humans since it has been shown to cause liver cancer in animals. * Many scientists believe there is no safe level of exposure to a carcinogen.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDT

A review article in The Lancet states: "research has shown that exposure to DDT at amounts that would be needed in malaria control might cause preterm birth and early weaning ... toxicological evidence shows endocrine-disrupting properties; human data also indicate possible disruption in semen quality, menstruation, gestational length, and duration of lactation".[47]
Other studies document decreases in semen quality among men with high exposures (generally from indoor residual spraying).[109]
Studies are inconsistent on whether high blood DDT or DDE levels increase time to pregnancy.[84] In mothers with high DDE blood serum levels, daughters may have up to a 32% increase in the probability of conceiving, but increased DDT levels have been associated with a 16% decrease in one study.[110]
Indirect exposure of mothers through workers directly in contact with DDT is associated with an increase in spontaneous abortions.[108]
Other studies found that DDT or DDE interfere with proper thyroid function in pregnancy and childhood.[84][111]
Mothers with high levels of DDT circulating in their blood during pregnancy were found to be more likely to give birth to children who would go on to develop autism.[112][113]

Aside from causing cancer and birth defects it's lethal to wildlife as any insect it kills then posions the animals that eats it as well, its also capable of poluting water sources. Get rid of that stuff safely anon. Nastly shit, gave millions of farmers worldwide cancers from spraying it

You've got cancer in a can

It's light grease. Open one, they're not valuable. Of course it's labeled "poison" so (most) grunts won't spread it on crackers.

A few seconds search finds it easily on Ebay which is a great place to get pic when identifying stuff.

It's old because the numbers predate NSN (begun 1974).

A good place to ask about old Supply questions would be arfcom since many of those old fuckers are even older than I and armorers will remember their applicable Supply pubs.

A general Supply thread sticky (also including modern catalogs since that data is worth hoarding) could genuinely help /k/ do useful fun research.

I should have mooched a discarded Fed Log CD/DVD back in the day (it doesn't take much disk space) but someone may have a superseded copy to share. The non-weapons parts of Fed Log have many uses too.

A heavily moderated (because that's the price of useful content to help other /k/tards) sticky on how to understand military Supply nomenclature and forms can pay off bigly at estate sales and other places where sellers don't know what they have and let it go cheap.

It says poison on the can because DO NOT EAT is too difficult to understand.

DDT is named after its discoverer before he used the money for real estate ventures. That's right, DDT stands for Dr. Donald Trump.

Winning.

Dispose of the cans properly in compliance with applicable law. Or do it the Chinese way and just pour it down the drain and give the cans to the poor for cooking containers.
