Was the VDV entirely wiped out at the start of the war? I know some unit suffered 100% casualty rates but how badly did the organization as a whole fair under the dire circumstances that the Russian army experienced.

It's a time-honored tradition older than this war. They just took it to 11 this time.

Yes and no. Some units have been completely wiped out and rebuilt multiple times with the 1st guards tank as an example having had this happen to them 3 times so far. They still exist in name, but they aren't "the VDV" anymore as all of the originial and semi-competent units within it have been completely wiped out except for some higher-ups. The VDV today are just standard infantry but with slightly different equipment who just happens to have the VDV logo attatched to their foreheads.

The VDV (and Naval Infantry) also have the convenient trait where they're not directly under any particular military district; the VDV command reports to the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
This presumably makes them convenient to throw into whatever hellhole is opening in the lines, no matter who's in charge of the shitshow.
