And its just the barrel and frame contact points that are oiled, not lathering the slide or anything

They think guns are magic lasers that you press a button and a magic bolt is fired from it, rather than thinking of it as a MACHINE. You keep a sewing machine or bike chain oiled, why not a freaking GUN.

There should not be any visible amount of oil on a firearm.
Oil is very damaging to wood stocks and if it gets into the chamber it can interfere with brass adhering to the chamber when firing.
Oil on firearms also has other problems, because it will 1) burn off or 2) get flung off during operation.
We use put oil in our car engines because it is a relatively sealed environment with sump and gaskets and won't just cook off or get flung off.

>contact points oiled
this is useless and does nothing. Modern firearm steel is relatively high grade and well machined and galling is basically impossible. People don't go around oiling their door hinges all day and those get more use than most guns that people obsessively oil.

>sewing machine
What's that?
>bike chain
Is not subjected to carbon deposits. Moot comparison. Also, modern high performance chains (e.g. motorcycle chains) use o-ring sealed lubrication systems and don't need oil for lubrication, only a form of preservative.

I mean there shouldn’t be so much excess oil you can spot it across the room, but yeah some people have no idea what maintenance means. I’ve taken the responsibility of beating cleaning habits into all the first time gun owners I help out.
>>64102612
Like this anon said. A lot of first time owners just think it’s a magic device where you put thing inside thing and a thing comes out. Wait until you see their cars. They drive on bald tires, with dirty filters, and are 20k miles overdue for an oil change.

Unironically sewing machine oil does make for pretty good makeshift gun lube, we used to use it for the lashers for telecom stuff which is a little sled filled with gears that wire-raps telephone and fiber/coax wire bundles together. I’ll sometimes use it for carry weapons since it’s non-toxic and non-staining and doesn’t need to hold up to a heavy range sesh.

A surprising amount of people do zero maintenance on anything they own and just expect it to function just as they have left it. Firearms are definitely no exception and depending on the owner, they can be well cared for or left in a shed for 30 years before seeing the light of day. God only knows how many rusted guns I've seen come through the door, some of which would have been really nice too if they weren't neglected. I saw a nice Colt Series 70 Gold Cup with a rusted out bore as the previous owner shot WWII surplus corrosive. 45 through it and never cleaned it afterward and many rusty attic shotguns/rifles. Honest use is one thing but pure neglect and laziness can be expected for a sizeable portion of gun owners.

No anon, you keep bicycle chains waxed. Road grime accumulates in oil and grinds chains into an early retirement. No need to moan about having to use a crock pot to wax your chain, there's dripwax these days, which is 95% as good.

if you're dousing it in oil thats no good but a thin layer over the mechanisms is good. If they're remarking it isnt bone dry then they're the ones with the problem.

I over oil my guns but I know people who dont put a drop of oil into theirs and are surprised when they dont work.

Theyre remarking that its oiled at all, as its literally just a thin layer on the barrel that contacts the inside of the slide and the rails of the frame that contact the slide

In that case, I haven't a damn clue. Even if they had safes that were temperature controlled + dehumified, you'll still want oil between the moving parts.

I use a little bit of grease where necessary. Do you apply a sloppy amount of oil?
Anonymous No.64103674

It depends entirely on the firearm. Something with a higher cyclic rate it wouldn't hurt to have oil even in excess. Especially around the traveling parts obviously.

I get the feeling you are fucking retarded but don't know it. Has nobody pulled you aside yet?

Apply oil with oily cloth.
Wipe away with dry cloth.

That’s all you need.

My buddy bought a Mosin without telling me and shot some surplus ammo through it and then put it in a closet for like a year. He went back and tried to shoot it and was having accuracy and just general issues and asked me finally to look at it (which is when I learned he owned it). Look down the barrel, it's corroded to hell. He asked me how to fix it and has trouble accepting that it's fucked.

Ar15 high use
Apply 5w30 like its free and watch that shit spit out fucking everywhere. Functions flawlessly. Minimal wear as motor oil is designed specially to lubricate high heat metal on metal parts at high speeds. Keeps carbon suspended so it cleans like a dream. Fuck you autistic clowns with dry rifles. I fucking shoot mine.

I love when friends do this, I also have a friend who is a perpetual retard and never learns, like when he wanted a Beretta and ended up with a Px4 in .40 instead of a 92fs in 9mm like he wanted. And he also had to order it from a catalog lmao so it’s all him.

Did you oil the gas chamber?
Anonymous No.64103763
I am a chronic over-oiler. I've been putting a drop of oil on my glock extractors for years and had chronic stovepipe problems, not connecting the dots. Ran the extractor dry and had no issues.

The first couple rounds I shoot out of my AR15s always shoot a blast of oil all over my right arm and across the receiver as the oil i put in the three bore is thrown out of the gas vents.

Same guy then bought an AK. He put an ultimak handguard rail and red dot on it. Good so far. But he also put a magnifier on it, so he's got a standard style magnifier all the way out on a handguard. He mentioned it again only after putting it all together and asked me if there was a magnifier with a bigger view than what they sell since he was disappointed how tiny the view in the one he had is. I had to explain how to unfuck his situation (either buy a pistol scope or just take the magnifier off and use the red dot). He wasn't happy with either because he wanted magnified and sunk cost, so he's just out there shooting with his magnified handguard mounted red dot.

After getting hot carbon filled oil spat into my face from an ejection port shooting southpaw I started using a very small touch of grease on contact points to lube and it works well and lasts long.
