Ramming battlecruiser, could it work?
No weapons on the ship, just a very point and sharp huge blade.

The crew can be reduced to only very few people, because there are no guns to operate, just the engine and the radar.

Since there are no guns, the shape can be very flat and streamlined, also the same width of armor could be placed everywhere.

The armor could be around 3 meters of armor, maybe composite or just rha.

Modern ships are have paper thin hulls, it would be able to go through them no problem.

I don't think anything would be able to defeat it.

So that's obviously retarded, but I'm unironically curious what a naval engineer thinks about the prospect of maintaining a ship that's meant to ram into other ships at top speed.

the idea of torpedo rams was popular for a short while because of the difficulty of guns penetrating armor in early battles with ironclads but very quickly it became obvious ramming wasn't actually viable because guns caught up. in modern times it would just get sunk by missiles from a hundred miles out
Anonymous No.64106438 >>64106527
Back in the ironclad days, it was a common tactic. Right now? OP, stand up and explain to the class why you would build and maintain a target so large as to be able to be seen from space, whose monetary cost would equip half the fleet with modern anti-ship batteries.

I mean I think there was some cases of ramming in WW2 battles but they were more done out of desperation/the ship being fucked anyway

It worked a few times in the American civil war when ironclads rammed wooden hulled ships, and at the battle of Lissa. It mistakenly led naval designers to conclude ramming was the future for 40 years.

Don't the Chinese employ these as part of their fishing militia? They circumvented the fact that they're vulnerable as fuck by threatening to glass any country that tries to retaliate with military force.

Worth noting is the fact the Chinese have yet to actually sink anything with their rams, even when they're just bullying other peoples' fishing fleets without fear of getting JDAM'd or splashed by the first aircraft they see.

ah yes, the principle reason why we can't ever have nice fucking things
anyway, what I was saying is that the FLIPS have not, so far, had any boats sunk iirc, despite the chinks trying their darndest, principally in a ramming war
not sure if they've tried swamping the Flip boats with their water cannons and bow waves, apparently it's doable

Better guns making for longer engagement distances made rams (even when put on a ship with other ways to fight, like torpedo rams) largely obsolete in the late 19th century. Not that any iro0nclad had ever been sunk in combat by one despite rams being seen as a primary battleship weapon for a few decades there. While there's been a few instances of ramming in combat since, the general trend has only been towards ever longer range weapon and thus rams getting even more obsolete.
Also keep in mind that your modern day ram ships has to actually catch up to the enemy to do anything, so no matter how much armour you pretend it has one torpedo to the propulsion and suddenly your ridiculously heavy and expensive leviathan is left thoroughly mission killed even if it can still limp around on redundant systems. Because something that heavy ain’t getting anywhere in a hurry without the entire propulsion system working.
On the other hand, you can make them completely unmanned, much smaller and thus cheaper, and have a lot more of them instead. Sure, this means the actual ramming won't do much, but a few hundred pounds of HE on board will solve that issue handily. Various iterations of this have proven themselves highly effective in wartime, the direct opposite of the ram's proven uselessness.
And if you're thinking of the Chinese shenanigans, keep in mind that the ramming there is specifically meant to be something they can do to fuck with people without outright shooting at them, since the latter would be a direct act of war, which they currently don't want to engage in. For this they have little need of special ram ships, you can bully fighting trawlers with a somewhat reinforced fishing trawler and coast guard ships with bigger coats guard ships. China just so happens to be building some very large coast guard ships, and navy warships, that'll do very well there while also serving as a general status symbol and likely to prove relatively useful in case of actual war.

I think people took the wrong lesson from Lissa such as ramming and better training. I think the real lesson is never buy from America. If you look at how those ships were built and how many corners were done in their construction such as using green wood and instead of installing Krupp guns like they were suppose to they ended up using some merchant ship cannons instead.
