They are poking to see just how much of Amerimuttistan is a potemkin coulisse and how much is real. America and Europe is in a pretty decrepit state but America is comparatively worse off. I predicted in another thread that the last USN carrier that will ever be built will be laid down soon or perhaps it already has been. Late 2030s-early 2040s will see USN transition to a latin american frigate navy.

This has its own drawbacks, IIRC USS Baltimore (CA, 9x203mm) lost her bow in a hurricane because it was too lightly built.
