Sitting high and at a right angle. Doesn't look like its taking on any appreciable amount of water.

Hitting things head on is the best way to hit things with a ship since it doesn't rip gashes into the ships hull along its length and flooding the entire ship. There's a whole theory out there about the Titanic staying afloat if it just rammed the iceberg head on instead of trying to evade it.

>Trusted naval analyst Xavier Vavasseur [@xaviervav] had the opportunity to visit a Type 052DL destroyer named Nanning. Now remember, 052DLs are the latest variant of the 052D and feature an elongated flight deck, thus a longer overall length. We can assume that these are the latest specimen of the Chinese naval design culture. He was happy to see the ship in excellent condition and goes on to compare it to ships about to delivered to navies for commissioning. The analyst was surprised to see just a couple of water tight doors / compartments between the area he was allowed to tour. He also noticed a severe lack of damage control and fire fighting equipment. What was worse was that fuel for the RHIB and torpedoes had no blast doors between them. He goes on to compare the Chinese destroyer to the other naval vessels he has visited, stating that other ships were littered with fire fighting gear and water tight doors. Below is the area he is talking about.

I don't know either way but those three paragraphs certainly do not convince me. It starts right right off the bat making some strange assumptions. Icebergs are not stationary since they float on water.

>On 7 November 1879, Arizona suffered a collision with an iceberg en route to Liverpool.[7] Stephen Guion was on board with two of his nieces.[2] It was found that the ship was holding an insufficient watch in the bow, with most of the deck crew positioned on or around the bridge. Fortunately, while she was going at full speed, the ship's top speed was only about 15 knots, so the damage was not threatening.[8] As such, she remained afloat and was able to proceed to St. John's where she underwent temporary repairs before returning to Scotland.[1] Guion advertised this near disaster as proof of Arizona's strength.[3]

The "hit the iceberg head on" stuff was always silly to me. *Maybe* the ship would have survived (looking at how Britannic reacted to shock bending frames and making watertight doors fail to close, I lean towards "Titanic still would have sank.") No officer would have ever ordered it. Smashing the entire bow in, killing hundreds of crew & passengers, and guaranteeing the company's newest liner was horribly damaged.

EW: The passengers would have come in. […] C: Do you think that if the helm had not been starboarded there would have been a chance of the ship being saved? EW: I believe the ship would have been saved, and I am strengthened in that belief by the case which your Lordship will remember where one large North Atlantic steamer, some 34 years ago, did go stem on into an iceberg and did come into port, and she was going fast.Mr. Laing: The "Arizona" - I remember it.

There's a lot of denial of reality shit and outright just lying because they're really extroverted, social societies where social standing and appearances matter more than objective reality. Just something that came out of thousands of years of being ruled by tyrannical manchild emperors and the political games that surround them.

You follow the US Army's Russian Way of War 2025 edition and see all the shit about Russians basically lying with every breath about force readiness down to the point the inspectors were in on it too? Same shit. Entire society runs on personal relationships filled with lying about how infinity plus one perfectly things are running.

Most comments are criticising the Chinese government and military's "no shooting first" policy, which leads to ramming tactics with highly advanced 7000t destroyers, which led to this accident.
They believe that foreign incursions into Chinese territorial waters should be met with gunfire and Flip monkeys especially need to be taught a lesson for their repeated incursions.

It helps with their incremental colonization of the South China Sea. If it becomes too much of a hassle to defend your claims out there, you'll give up and leave and China wins without ever having to fire a shot.

Additionally, the impulse is simply irresistible. The Soviets also made a habit of ramming US warships to assert dominance and makes the US look weak.

Of course, this is a matter of cultural perspective, one might see the real weakness being the need to bully your rivals unprovoked, but such is the way Asiatics approach the world.

Maybe it's you who needs to change perspective, as there are many more Asiatics than you, and to awe and impress them, both as allies and as enemies, you need to do it their way.
Western style liberalism impresses nobody and if you can't awe them you can't get them to do what you want or think what you want them to think.

Would and could are two different things. Theoretically, Chinese encroachment on UN recognized EEZs belonging to other nations could be used to start shooting at said poachers, or arresting them, confescating their ships and catches, and then sending them to prison. In practice, the flips are poor as fuck as they'd just take it up the ass because China hasn't made themselves enough of a pain to the Western world for the real bitchslap to happen. Think of what China is doing as the same gray zone "little green men" shit that Putin was pulling in Ukraine before he went full retard, where they're trying to slowly chip away at the world order but doing so at a low enough level that the Western world doesn't consider it worth the pain of making them stop.

Still, the sheer force of inertia and difficulty maneuvering a ship in a multi closing scenario means that unless both ships turned and slowed away at the last second (they weren't exactly coordinating) a collision was unavoidable

Even then though, a lot of collission at sea happen because 1. Their AIS/Radar was disabled and visibility was shit 2. They speed up when they should slow down 3. They turn left like idiots

The first Sino Japanese war was fought with the Qing China which was a fundamentally different country. Among other factors, the Beiyang fleet suffered self sabotage since Han people were not willing to fight for the manchu government, and there was no modern nationalism uniting the different people from different Chinese provinces. It would be like equating modern Japan with sengoku era Japan which lost to Koreans at sea.

On the eve of the Battle of the Yalu, most Western observers would have reliably told you that the Beiyang Fleet was indisputably the most powerful in the region by the weight of its battle line. The IJN had nothing even remotely close to its two German-built ironclad capital ships. What happened next would completely shatter that perception, and with it any hopes for Qing China or its successor states, whether the ROC and PRC, of ever being able to challenge Japan in eastern waters for the rest of the 20th Century.

That is the scale of the defeat which the Philippines inflicted on the PLAN and CCG yesterday. India and the US may be able to buy new Rafales and Superbugs and fix the hulls of the damaged DDGs, but the catastrophe that has been inflicted on China today is worse than any material loss: it is the end of its naval ambitions for the next 100 years

>Basically China and Russia think the shitty withdraw from Afghanistan is equivalent to the US having a 1991 USSR total collapse moment and have horribly underestimated the US (and commitment to allies) + overestimated themselves so they are behaving like shitters.

The USSR withdrawal from Afghanistan was a few years before 1991. So yeah, you are three quarters correct. They are poking to see just how much of Amerimuttistan is a potemkin coulisse and how much is real. America and Europe is in a pretty decrepit state but America is comparatively worse off. I predicted in another thread that the last USN carrier that will ever be built will be laid down soon or perhaps it already has been. Late 2030s-early 2040s will see USN transition to a latin american frigate navy.

This has its own drawbacks, IIRC USS Baltimore (CA, 9x203mm) lost her bow in a hurricane because it was too lightly built.

Rome's defining characteristic was the ability to raise armies and wage wars. Only Americans think of Rome as some form of apex civilization, even though Rome resembled the USSR more than the US.

That is a Civilization. A true Civilization rewards its men with land and pussy. Not just the top men, but all good men.
