The US was trying to butter up China at the time thinking they'd swing the other way and become a de-facto American ally against Russia only for the Soviet Union to be revealed as not being nearly as strong as people through and eventually crumbling apart as a result of the combination of Latvians joining hands and singing and Romanians Goatsing their own flag and then making a hobby out of chucking molotov cocktails at commies which then made the whole China alliance redundant.
