Was the shotgun/smooth bore culture in the US up through to the end of WWI more due to bong influences or people being poor?
like by the end of WWI it goes away due to conscripts being trained on rifles and cheap surplus flooding the market (what's fucking crazy is the AEF was almost as big as the total number of union soldiers during all of the civil war combined).
but prior to WWI and all those cheap guns and ammo being dumped on the US market there's a distinct, primary bong style with fouling pieces in places like new england, flat butts, less stock drop, smooth bores and a kraut based culture for the more expensive, but less common guns with curved butts of varying degrees, more stock drop and rifling being more common but not always present and this is more common in areas with large nazi populations like pennsylvania and wisconson

Just had more to do withh the versatility of a shotgun& the fact that most people prior to the 1920's in American living in rural places. A shotgun to them (and to us) is a highly versatile tool. Jut change your ammo type and you can kill literally any animal in the Western hemisphere and still harvest the meat They were cheap because yeah poverty and the simpler guns were a lot more rugged and reliable

If you removed the outlier of 5 million ar15s a year sold you'd find the most common long arm in the US is still a shotgun. Likely the most common sole owned firearm. The lack of "patterns" of NE rifles like you see in the southern United States is more due to density of international ports and sea trade. The 20-30% of rifle owners more easily imported them and their gunsmiths copied continental styles.
