The glue can decay over time.

the vast majority are rated to one round. if it gets shot, it's expired and time to get a new one.

Yes and no. Yes once it's past its expiration date its no longer certified to provide the protection it was originally claimed to give thanks to materials like the glue coming loose over time. No, it doesn't mean the plates aren't able to provide any protection or that once it's time is up it just disintegrates into dust

Take this to /gq/ you're getting ChatGPT wrong answers. The plates in your pic are rated to three hits. >>64112591 is patently wrong except for the absolute bottom barrel Level IV plates. Other NIJ levels are rated to six. All current US military plates are multi hit.
>>64112590
Wrong. Only applies to certain models with recorded delamination issues. TAP Gammas and certain Ceradynes which were recalled.

Expiration date is just a warranty period provided by the manufacturer. People have tested decades-old plates to function.

Since spall/shrapnel coatings are a rubber yes there's some definite lifespan. If its kept in a closet for 20 years, hell 50, its probably still useful.

Remember that AR500 Level 4 ceramic plate? hahahahaha

It's just because America is run by lawfags. That's it.

That was an RMA 1155, believe it or not, that AR500 had rebadged under their own label. RMA's entire lineup is sub par. The elites don't want you to know this, but all of reddit and arfcom has been astroturfed into shitty plates.

Yeah but I've shot old Serb plates (20 year old Mile Dragic polyethylene) and they held up fine for what they were rated for. If you have nothing but old plates, they're better than nothing. If you have the few hundred dollars and the need to go into a warzone, just get new plates.

It's a lot/date code in case they need to recall them.

The nice thing about old plates is they're basically the same as fresh ones but usually cost like a tenth of the new price meaning they're immensely fungible. Really great training tool, much smarter investment than buying steel imo

I agree. See the recent flash sales on "expired" Hesco 3611s, Hesco 4400s, and Protech 2230s.
Every so often you get someone who doesn't know what they got and you can get gucci shit like a pair of LTC 28595s for $450. I saw a pair of Hesco 4800LVs sold on fleabay recently for $380 or so. Not super great plates but an excellent deal.

I'm gonna aktsually you bro. Military plates are inspected every so often and don't technically expire as long as they're recently inspected and pass x-ray, tap, and torque. Even big daddy socoom's deep pockets only buy new plates every couple of years.
The guys that really get shafted are cops, but the NIJ comps them up to half the cost of NIJ-certified armor using BVP grants, so it's fine if they have to repurchase armor every five years.
