I’ve always used dots + mags, prisms, or mpvos for my ARs. Hop has me thinking I should step in to 2022 and try an lpvo. Is my experience of an entry level model (slx nova, sig msr, rt6 etc) gonna be bad enough that I’ll be turned off them forever or are they like 80% as good as mid tier stuff?

those are adequate for getting your foot in the water and testing if your needs are met with the optic. obviously you can fine tune if needed, say u wish u had better glass clarity, or fov, or eye box, just know there will always be a slider value for one positive might have a negative impact on another value, mainly weight. and then they get expensive, maybe you have nods and need a 1x so at that point youll need a dot but then whats the point of having 1x u can just go prism or acog

LPVOs are fine. They generally have a few drawbacks though.
The 1x will always be slower than a dot because that is a trait inherent to any scope/prism due to eye box/eye relief
They have a lot of small moving internal parts which makes them much more susceptible to functional failures if the gun encounters frequent impacts or even one substantial impact.

Anyone know what the longest range kill with a MK18 during the GWOT was? I had a short chat with a vet who was in Iraq. He claimed one of his dudes put down a haji 400 yards away with his MK18 that had an ACOG on it. He said obviously engaging at those distances with a MK18 was pretty rare, but guys did get effective hits well beyond what the MK18 was meant for.

No Indian River Shooting Range. I read online that ****technically**** it's legal to shoot recreationally on land managed by the Florida Wildlife Management provided it's hunting season and it's done safely. The problem, I have read, is that because of Florida's geography it's very hard to find a natural backstop.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm considering going to one of the wildlife areas or conservation areas and trying it out. Problem is with this kind of stuff asking forgiveness instead of permission might involve coppas drawing guns on me and I don't want that.

MPVOs are cool, MPVOs with dots are cool, LPVOs are cool and LPVOs with dots have their perks. For most of my uses I'd rather have an lpvo and dot than lug around a sub 16" AR with big glass unless it was something like a zco or leupold 2-10, and save the 3-18s and 4-16s for a dedicated SPR. idk it just looks silly having a > 28mm objective lens on a general purpose type rig

I don’t like FFP LPVOs as a concept because you get a pretty weak reticle at the low end which is half the point of an LPVO in the first place.
A razor 1-6 is much nicer to look through and actually use than an elcan and unless you’re overly concerned about durability then the razor 1-6 is the better option.
I’m saying this as someone with an elcan btw.
Red dot magnifier is the optimal choice for 90% of applications unless you’re doing a specific build / use case.
Prisms only worth it if you really care about durability or if you really just want one to have it because it’s ok to like things and think they’re cool for its own sake.

None of the FFPs are good at that and yes you can resort to illumination which is fine for range use but again it comes down to what you want it for / what you care about having and don’t care as much about not having

depends how you have your gun zeroed, I have a 200 yd zero on my lpvo gun so it's flat out to 200, no need for subtensions. Maybe your eyesight is just better than mine, I'm pretty much always gonna use the max 6x mag of shooting beyond 200. If I was say scanning a treeline 300 yards away and not on 6x mag already, and did need to engage a target, then I would hold over like using any other optic without subtensions.

The Coyote V8 has some kind of engine tick problem and then the MT82 is prone to breaking.
I think they resolved it by 2020 though.
