Mogami class is a newer clean sheet design with lots of automation, so crew requirements are only around 90 people.
MEKO A-200 is a modernized 1980s design, and while the capabilities are similar, has a crew requirement of over 120 people.

There is this chart, but the UK numbers are boosted by a bunch of civil contracted PFIs and the Russian numbers boosted by a bunch of shitty soviet era boomer subs and massive as fuck ice breakers. Japan is a regional ally of Australia and building a rapport like this is a good political strat

And it doesn't really matter because they have about the same experience as the german navy. I'd say less because the germans have more regional maneuvers and hands-on experience with russians especially in ASW. Both have the industry to built hightech modern warships. Both are retarded when it comes to networking and programming their own software.

This decision was obviously due to geographic circumstances, political and maybe logistical and economical. It makes more sense to buy from your local ally. Furthermore I have no doubt japs bent over the table and offered far better conditions in topics like technology transfer, amount of production in Australia and maintenance deals.
