Pretty sure there are tutorials on youtube that show you how to repair them properly.
I would learn as much as I can about it before attempting a repair that might make the problem worse, but it's best to fix it the correct way the first time.

The buck is probably not a bad knife but it seems overpriced for what you're getting.
Spydercos are usually good quality and the VG10 would be easy to keep sharp, but you'll likely be doing it more often than the s35vn on the rat.
So if you want a good budget knife for normal everyday use, get the spyderco. If you need a tougher steel for heavier use that holds an edge longer, grab the ontario.
And the ontario knives are going to be bought up by collectors so availability won't always be there for new ones.

Thoughts on carrying a fully serrated knife? Are they any better for EDC purposes? What are the benefits of carrying a fully serrated knife compared to a plain edge or even a combo edge?

I only own one fully serrated knife that I regularly carry. It's an Endura in K390.

I generally prefer plain edge, but they have some benefits. They cut through course materials, like rope and careboard, better. They stay sharp long as fuck (especially in k390).

I recommend having one. Downsides is less "clean" cutting ability (you have the front 1/8 inch), and more difficult to sharpen.

Yeah. That's why l was also debating getting something like a Tanto with a serrated blade. The front tip portion is a plain edge so l have some capability of doing clean cuts without sacrificing much blade length.

Serrated knives suck. They gum up with tendon and sinew on deep tissue cuts. Even skin. They aren't great on larger fiber based or multi layer/material ropes.
Frankly serrations are a meme. About the only good use for serrations are if they are put near the hilt on a dagger for sawing on a deep stab to catch and tear skin and intestines ect. The Gerber Mark 2 was good for that. Outside that in actual use I have yet to use a Serrated knife that wasn't outperformed by a plain edge.

The fact that serrated knives are so widely used (especially outside of the folding knife space, like in culinary knives for cutting meat and bread, fibrous things that you allege they aren't good at cutting) means your opinion can literally just be discarded, you're basically saying the rest of the world is retarded and you know better. I mean it's absolutely ridiculous, you only need to try using a serrated knife one time to see the obvious fact that they're better at certain things than a straight edge. Wanna have a race where we cut through 100 synthetic ropes, break down 100 cardboard boxes, and cut through 100 rolls of linen cloth as fast as possible? What knife are you realistically bringing to that, if your life is on the line?

As someone who hates tantos and fundamentally finds the two flat edges and two tips pointless and overall a worthless blade unless you are in a face mask and body armor stabbing a tree in the woods for tiktok, I still have to admit, this does make the tanto seem like a reasonable blade shape.

Still, the belly of a nice drop point sharpened on a 300 grit diamond stone, when the edge just vibrates your fingernail when you run it down it. Absolute monstrous cutter. Nothing but gravity pushing it down and going back and forth and ive gone inches into wood with scary ease. I don't know how much better a serrated, non-curved edge would realistically be than a toothy belly.

Serrated knives are used to cut bread so you do not crush the bread. It is a light sawing action. Serrated knives are used to EAT (cooked meat) with as you would be dragging the entire edge across a plate and would dull them quickly and would be higher maintenance.
Butchers do not use Serrated knives for the reason I stated. And bread knives are usually rather large wave edge.
Synthetic rope? Is chopped cutting takes too long. So larger chopping knife. Cardboard boxes cut best with a thin straight blade. Serrated make jagged hacking sawing cuts. Linnen cloth cuts are made best with a long straight edge.
Serrated knives are a meme. They are not the best at any task. Its obvious your actual real world experience is limited.

The Work Sharp Precision Adjust Sharpener. I had to go look it up because it's such a mouthful. It took me a minute to figure it out, and how not to accidentally scrape beyond the blade (since you can scratch the rest of the knife). But once I got it, it was pretty easy. I watched their YouTube video. One thing I noticed is that they basically lie in their manual about the number of times you should use it per side (they say 8-10) but the guy in the video says he'll do 50. Which makes a lot more sense once you actually use it. I also got the Upgrade Kit after because the base one is fine for sharpening, but I had a few blades that needed to be completely reshaped so I got that. It's not cheap, so I was pretty hesitant about it, but the Anon here was happy with how easy it was to use and so I figured, why not? My only complaint is that it doesn't have even more grits than the ones available. It certainly enough to put a sharp enough edge that you wouldn't complain (can do the classic blade sharpness tests people do), but not enough to sate the autism. If that makes sense.

One thing to consider is ease of closing / re-sheathing. With a manual, you can easily close it and put it back in your pocket with your eyes closed. With an out the side auto, you have to overcome the spring tension and should probably use two hands to close it. Fixed blades are fixed, you have to be very careful putting them back in the sheath, and should probably be looking at it.

Just going in you need to realize that you are paying a premium for the Spyderco and Benchmade brand names alone. If that doesn't bother you, then it comes down to what you want to use the knife for, whether you value blade retention or corrosion resistance and how much you are willing to pay for a knife.
Personally I don't buy Benchmade for two reasons: they are well known anti-second amendment advocates and their quality has recently declined some. That may not bother you and there's lots of people who swear by Benchmade knives, so that's your judgement call.
Spydercos are also good knives but depending on what steel they use, which the higher end ones tend to have decent steel.
The Benchmade in S30v will hold an edge longer because it's a harder steel, but will be more difficult to sharpen than the Spyderco in VG10. The Benchmade in CPM D2 is a semi-stainless steel, so it's really tough but not completely resistant to corrosion. It's also harder to sharpen than VG10.
All that being said, whichever one you pick will be a good knife.

The other anon is right, the terava is very wedge like, pretty thick and super durable, great knife for the woods and bushcrafting but it would not be a great choice for game/food processing.
If I'm just opening packages, cutting fruit, game processing I would choose a Buck like the other anon said, their models (not the China made nail nick folders) are all hollow (ie. concave) grind geometry, extra slicey, super easy to keep sharp.

I carried an izula for a few years. Then got the Izula 2 and carried that for a couple years. They are better than folding knives when reliability is an absolute necessity. Esse 1095 is softer than Kabar 1095. You will have to sharpen the Izula more than you would say a Kabar. But it also takes a great edge quicker. I would recommend an izula or izula 2 to anyone who actually spends time outside over a pocket knife. I carry a folder now but its due to reasons not related to the performance of the Izula.

Excellent choice.

As for a second knife, I have an H1 and I like it but have some complaints.
>extremely thick blade spine, just creates weight for no real reason
>grip isn't very grippy, would NOT want to use the knife wet, ever
>not a fan of the sheathe at all, it's just annoying
However it's very strong, factory edge is sharper than hell, and it's basically a puukko with a mild convex grind. So the blade over all is very nice. However, I think you'll run into any of the same problems with the H1 as you will the Jรครคkรคripuukko. Because they're the same thing in essence, a scandi grind with a super thick spine. I personally haven't felt the Jรครคkรคripuukko is lacking in slicy-ness. Maybe try it first before picking up something else. If you're good with whetstones, turn the secondary bevel into a convex and you have the same thing.

And really, unless it has the absolute bottom of the barrel Paki or Chinese steel the cheaper knives can do what you need them to. Most of us aren't going face a SHTF moment where we need a indestructible knife for survival, and the odds of using a knife in a fight are pretty low.

I just used it 20 minutes ago to before and after my chef knife, it was 378 avg on first three tests before sharpening, after sharpening it avged 211, which is actually slightly sharper than i got testing a fresh Dewalt Carbide utility blade (218). It does give you a quantifiable result for sharpening or making knives. It will not tell you things like whether your edge is toothy or not, or how good your cutting geometry is, though. The only thing it can really tell you is how thin the apex is. But that's good enough for me, I know what angles im sharpening at and what grits leave a toothy edge and not.

There's three you can get and the price varies a lot. Picrel testers are $240/$170/$125 respectively. I got the most expensive one because I felt like it.

One issue with ZBP that I heard from someone who used to work at Microtech is that the tolerances being higher means cnc tool wear is a bigger factor when producing them. Hi, that might've been me. Yes, the CNC tool wear is a massive issue for the ZPB line to the point where one day we made fuck-all because of so much time wasted tuning the stupid thing. Too many stacking tolerances in a single direction causes lots of annoyance with making sure the mechanism fires and locks properly.

there's a Mil-Tec chinese knockoff of it, costs like 30-40 bucks. haven't watched reviews but it's probably decent enough.
if you're fine with a different blade shape but want german and that handle, you could go for an eickhorn FK1000 (AK47-ish/KCB77 blade) or FK2000 (M9-ish blade). they're a budget series that uses bayonet blades, though still not really cheap.
I have an FK2000, but I don't have the sheath since I got it from when eickhorn was selling mystery boxes where for 75โ‚ฌ you'd get a random factory second s that were either put together from the wrong parts or blemished (not that I saw anything was wrong on mine, they must have very high QC standards), but usually without sheaths since they don't have many blemished sheaths.

might as well post what these factory seconds of mine look like.
top is an FK500, basically a kcb77 that has a regular handguard and no bayonet connector, but mine evidently was assembled with the bayo handguard.
middle is an SEK-P (double edged, double serrated) sorted out for being labeled as a different model but otherwise pristine. the best find of the bunch, on knifecommand one of these (albeit with sheath, unlike mine) is $285. which admittedly is overpriced for a little slab tang N695 knife even if the fit and finish is on point.
and then the bottom one is the FK2000. I genuinely don't know what's supposed to be factory second, as far as I can tell it's in perfect condition and correctly assembled. I did see one on ebay at the time where the blade was put in wrongly, with the edge pointing the other way, but that's not the case here. it leaves a very positive impression of eickhorns level of quality control if this counts as second rate.
might try my hands at making sheaths for these someday.

For builders and sharpeners, you have a daily quota (as a group) of 750 knives a day. Usually easily achieveable, especially with moving away from the tri-wing bits and how easy Gen3 is to assemble. The issue is that certain knives are a bitch and a half to assemble for one reason or another. For everyone else... the economy is shit and Tony's not the best with finances and retention if you're new. If you're from like five to ten years ago you're pretty much safe.

If you've ever bought multiple LUDTs you'd notice the two pins near the blade are different. That's because there's like 5 different sized pins to get the blade to lock closed or lock out properly, because of machining tolerances and anodization thicknesses on the handle. MSIs have ten small Torx and the main pivot screw which all take time. SOCOMs have all the mini Torx and the stupid lock bar to tune. All of that takes time.

The QA/QC on the parts is pretty bad. The knives are designed to a certain tolerance spec, but for example the ZBP UT's are just so horrendous to assemble that it's part of why I left. I spent some time trying to figure out why shit was so goddamn atrocious when assembling that I took to learning about the machines from guys on the factory floor in order to figure out wtf was going on. Tony wasn't a big fan of that (nor the days I couldn't get to work because of car issues). You'll send a batch of legs or whatever to QA/QC but because of product quantities you'll get a shitload of, say, legs that don't work, and they keep going through the system.

All in all... shiny on the outside, but don't look underneath the surface. And yet I'd hop back aboard in a heartbeat if I was asked. (Also Ray does a lot, LOT more than just media stuff)

Serious question: how feasible is using a folding knife for self defense? I own multiple nice fixed blades but short of neck carrying (retarded) it's not really possible to carry comfortably in, say, board shorts. I tried stuff like UltiClip etc, it just doesn't work for me. Clipping a folder inside my pants at around 4 o'clock is my favorite way to carry a knife. I have a liner locking US made Kershaw Link. If I stabbed a dog or some shit with it, would it close on my hands? It doesn't look like it would, but I'm skeptical.

Please no hurr durr buy a gun posts. I have guns too, I'm asking about knives specifically (in the knife thread, for a reason).

self defense with a knife is a ridiculous concept already but a self defense folder is so ridiculous is goes above and beyond. if you MUST protect yourself with a knife for some reason get a fixie because good luck fiddling with any kind of opening knife when your adrenaline is spiking and you're getting jerked around or half a second is the difference between life and death. Fixed blade is simple enough that you can reach for and use it even in a panicked state and faster than any sort of deployment method...

Knives are about the least feasible armed self-defense method there is, but they beat bare fists, offer some measure of deterrence, and folders carry so easily you forget they're there. They make plenty of sense as useful tools you can also cut a fucker with in a pinch but I wouldn't choose a knife at all if self-defense was the main goal and I had another choice. If I didn't have another choice, yeah, fixed is the way to go. Liner locks feel a bit sketchy, but plenty of other options are strong enough to not worry about the blade closing on your hand and a wave opener can deploy as quickly as drawing from a sheath with the caveat that you have to pull it out right (not hard) or the blade may need another flick.

I've monkeyed around with quite a few machetes over the years and they often let me down because I had too high expectations of them. They are good for grass/small vines/cane /light things but when they come into contact with more substantial things they don't do so well. If you want to chop through thicker things a skrama 240 is what you are looking for, a little more expensive and heavier than a machete.
For clearing small areas and smaller branches I have found the cold steel camp machete to be the most useful and stays on my quad with another on the mower and a backup in the garage. It isn't sexy or tactical but it's cheap, almost indestructible, just swing it back and forth kinda like a golf swing and you'll clear weeds and whatnot out. I've painted mine orange and added some reflective cord to the lanyard so if I lose it just hit it with a flashlight at night and it's gonna shine back at ya

Probably one of the PMP knives.
I've never owned one but I've heard they're ridiculously thick and overbuilt.

The Demko AD20 (not 20.5) comes to mind as one of the most heavily built knives that's still within the realm of reason, although good luck finding them in stock. The Hinderer XM-24 is also extremely overbuilt. But there's definitely thicker out there to the point of absurdity where it doesn't even work as a knife anymore.

Fixed

Occasional small rope, ziptie, or digging a thorn out of my hand. Self defense if I need to.
>Blade length/girth?
Under 3.5 inches

Merlot. Tan has like six different shades and looks better as flat desert tan than anodized tan. Merlot looks rich and deep. My LUDT is a red but that's only because they weren't doing merlot when I bought it (had to get the funny serial).

Ganzo G704 is super thick, a clone of Benchmade. Had two as beaters / lenders, they never failed. 440C.

if all you want is maximum thicc, you don't want to spend hundreds on a PMP, you can get one of these 10mm thick cleavers from S-Tec. $30-40, and well made enough. flips relatively well thanks to ball bearings, I can flip mine open even when the blade has to go straight up despite the weight.

thanks desu. ive almost sold the 0450 a couple times but everytime ive decided against it. it is a really good knife, i paid like 1/3rd of retail, and although i can nitpick the grind or the exposed lockbar relief.... its jsut a good knife

Yeah, that's my biggest gripe with mine. For such a slender, light, small knife, it's too thick behind the edge.
Anonymous No.64159065
yeah, would.

but itd be my most expensive knife by at least $100 so for now im holding off. honestly not much has caught my eye lately
>mcnees mac 2: 3.0" one... looks nice but shit pocket clip, too thick blade.
>hinderer: hard to find the config id want (ti scale, 3", slicer) and still not slicey
>oz: just eh. i could just rice out a spyderco in ti instead.
>holt: just nothing i really want
>grimsmo: too reddit

i might go ham on a TRM but besides that and a shiro i really dont have much im looking for in knife world rn
