How did you break an enemy phallanx back in ye olden days?
Why still engage in close quaters fighring when you could get a sling, bow or crossbow and keep shooting stuff?

Missile weapons were considered "unmanly" unironically. A lot of greek warfare involved levies as well, though that depends a lot on the specific time period. Coordinating thousands of men continued to be a problem up to the middle ages even, and that's why the "like just go around them like lmao" tactics weren't known to be employed exclusively until the well drilled and disciplined romans dunked on mithridates

You kill people until you can slip in to their formation with a short sword or you maneuver a second phalanx around them

You need a phalanx to stop the other phalanx from wanking up to you sling men and stabbing the shit out of them

Good luck moving a tight formation of heavily armored guys with giant spears at the same speed as dispersed skirmishers without breaking up the phalanx. And then what, you've pursued the skirmishers back a couple hundred yards and now there's cavalry behind you, you've fucked up now

>Phallanx slow chases them off the battle field
Ah they fled, victory
>But what about the cavalry?
They are cavalry, if you can't stop them from getting behind you when moving you weren't going to stop them while standing still

You flank them because phalanxes can't turn quickly. They have guys to stop you from flanking them but those guys aren't in a phalanx.

First of all anon, stop fighting fair. Have the high ground with fortifications, roll boulders, use siege weapons. Deny them access to food or water and make them stand in the hot sun while you surround them and pester them until they are faint from hunger, dehydration and sleep deprivation.
