That. IMHO "cassette futurism" is the cooler part of cyberpunk, I don't find the cheap mass produced stuff to be very aesthetically appealing.
Also, fuck you for reminding me about those. I'm still kicking myself for letting the last one I saw at auction slip away. That was about 5 years ago.

cheap mass produced old shit with new future shit strapped to it

it should look like PC builds in computer labs used to; nonessential, cheap, comfy and core bits should be old-timer stuff, but the mods and strap-ons albeit hastily (not crudely, slight difference) jerry-rigged on are state-of-the-art, or at least mimic state-of-the-art capabilities

Elysium did this almost perfectly for this AKM. you can imagine that while maybe the rounds are very high-tech and stolen, the airburst sensor and computer system itself is probably a kludged-together imitation of the real thing, and this is the kind of thing people have to do when weapons are heavily restricted. you have to use what you can salvage and steal.

also it should be rugged but functional. note for example the magazines "jungle taped" together rather than using the "proper" off-the-shelf magazine couplers available out there.

IMHO cyberpunk should showcase a broad range of weapons depending on who the user is. A solider would have some mass-produced factoryslop. A random person might have what you describe. Corporate middlemen and Government types would have quality modern weapons--modern by the standards of the era, not ours. That would include specialized anti-cyborg weapons. The higher-ups would have access to high-tech experimental prototypes that would look like shit out of Star Trek.

yeah that goes without saying, so I just focused on the jury-rigged type weapons
they should have "iphone-like" weapons like picrel
or like Queen Amidala's pistol in Phantom Menace

>soldier
I think should have weapons that look like futuristic weapons, but near-future, rugged-looking and worn, but not jury-rigged. I like the Star Wars Rebel DH17s or the Naboo soldiers' blasters which I think are airguns

>corporate middlemen
I've always liked the trope of them not being familiar with guns themselves, they do their killing through other means. they should, like Neo in Matrix, have to borrow someone's pistol when they do need it

>H&K G11

I wouldn't say star trek for the higher ups. I think Free cities gives a good example during the daughter's of liberty event if you don't have a bodyguard. Your pc is described as keeping ehat is essentially a modern version of the gyrojet pistol with contact triggered explosive tips so that even a glancing blow will take whatever it hits out of the fight.

To be fair it would vary depending on the setting. But the main point I was trying to make would be that in most cyberpunk universes there is a marked contrast between the "haves" and the "have nots". And while the "have nots" might be improvising and modding the "haves" ..well...have access to the modern tech of the day. Perhaps that's not always as fancy as star trek but it wouldn't be kluged together stuff, and it would be a lot fancier than what the average pleb or soldier would have.

Oh the game definitely does a good job of depicting that. The daughters are described as using cobbled together weapons that they were able to smuggle in and IEDs, whereas you have your what is essentially bolt pistol, or if you have a bodyguard, he/she can be a roided out cyborg supersoldier if you built your economy and reputation correctly. You can also have your own private army equipped with cutting edge powered armor that let's them just walk up to said rebels and grab the guns out of their hands. There is a definite divide in what you the player are capable of acquiring, vs what most of your attackers have access to, you can even afford an aircraft carrier(with fighter jets)and a submarine, as well as a rods from God equipped satellite by the end game. And you pay for it all out of pocket.

Industrial pasta machinery always was their main business. Basically, the guy who designed those guns was the rich son of the company founder. He was a gun autist, and when he took control of the company he decided to make some guns. The guns were always a side part to the pasta machinery business. They haven't made any new Mateba guns in many years, production volumes were always very low. Beretta probably outsold Mateba 1000:1 even when Mateba was still in business.

Godspeed, cyberpunk bro. Keep the good work.

This is honestly the same problem with a lot of modern designs for video game guns: the artist has no idea how the device is supposed to work, and there was zero thought given to practical matters like ergonomics. They just drew something they thought looked neat, and nothing more.

I really want one of those, not because of Star Wars but because when I was a kid that looked like the coolest thing ever in my dad's Beeman airgun catalogs. I actually don't care for the blaster they made from it, it's the short, fat, CO2 tank that looks really cool to me.

On this topic, are there any materials you could use to make a gun but which wouldn't collect fingerprints or DNA? I suppose that one way to do this would be to make it flammable and give it the ability to ignite itself - and it wouldn't be an issue while using it because the one mag you get wouldn't be enough to heat it to that point. Maybe some sort of impregnated polyethylene? A little capsule of a hypergolic liquid? I like the idea of a self-disposing handgun.

A partial solution. Not ideal and not DNA, but it would get rid of most of the gun. Gallium

For a small firearm out of aluminum you could have gallium, say a dummy round (slug & case) out of it and when in contact after about an hour or so the gun would begin to come apart like the most rusted iron you ever saw or wet cardboard.

Look up 'picking locks gallium' for plenty of vids of it in action.
Still has other problems though.
1. Reaction starts when they are in contact
2. Gallium starts to return to liquid at low temps - body heat is enough do it
3. I don't think an aluminum barrel would be user safe. Plus you would need more gallium for the front end
4. Random none Al parts left behind.

Or maybe a striker ignited thermite in the shape of the last round? You would have a couple of seconds before it started to slag slag.
- it would burn with gravity so at least half the gun is left behind.

There's a reason you can only think of two recoil-operated revolvers and it's because yes, that is some insane machining.
The reason you'll never see one in the US is that the American gun market is extremely poverty-focused.

Not my photo but there are some el cheapo grips for the Browning Hi Power that clamshell a rail system to it. The OD green especially has a very James Cameron Aliens/Avatar cassette futurism vibe to them. I love Titanfall II for all the little analog techy bits they have in the world there down to the comms being miniaturized things you can take out and insert into your own helmet.

either literally 2025 since it's cyberpunk dystopia right now or late 80's / early 90's but with some sci-fi tech. Think a android but in 90's swat armor with the really thick body armor and a normal pump shotgun
