I'll just copy/paste something I wrote on >>/his/ months ago.
The -Jitsu are Japanese "martial arts" designed to hurt. The -Do are Japanese "exercises" that are watered down versions of -Jitsu that survived the Meiji Reformation, which was Japan's version of Mao's Cultural Revolution.
Ju-do is the watered down version of original Ju-Jitsu. Ken-do is the watered down version of original Ken-jitsu.
BJJ is just Judo Ne-Waza. The BJJ name is a misnomer. Ne-Waza is the grappling element of Judo / Ju-Jitsu.
In the 20th century, Judo and [watered-down] Ju-Jitsu were used synonymously. So that's how the exercise became popular in Brazil. South America has the largest Japanese population after Japan itself. The Gracies adopted it and pretended to invent something new by focusing on the grappling.
Karate is to Okinawa what Ju-Jitsu was to Japan proper. They both included grapping, striking, and weapons. A government delegation from Japan's mainland visited Okinawa and liked Karate and took it to the mainland, then stripped it of its grappling and weapons elements.
Original Jujitsu, just like Karate, includes weapons alongside grappling. Modern day Karate that's practiced worldwide is not even Karate. It's almost an invented martial art that's super watered down, and is basically a creation of the Japanese education system meant to keep kids healthy. Karate in turn has its origins in one of the Fujian White Crane kungfu from China.
Most kungfu is fake but not all. The real ones ended up being displaced by the fake ones. The Olympics and Japanese government schools are ironically responsible for the continual decimation of Japanese martial arts. Olympic Judo isn't even real Judo, which in turn is watered down Ju-Jitsu.
