A modernized F-14 would be a pretty good 4.5 gen but the F-15 is better and the F-15EX is the best 4.5 gen in service.

I dont see why youd go with any jet other than F-35 when 90% of the countries allowed to buy it can get it for cheaper than any remotely comparable airframe thanks to the US wanting everyone to have it. In COIN youll lose less. In near peer itll wipe basically anything short of an F-22 in realistic BVR. In a defensive or offensive longer-term war itll do a better job with SEAD. Any european war thatll matter enough for fighter choice to impact the outcome will almost certainly have US support of some kind since despite the childish diplomacy, no one likes any of Europe's enemies in the US. Every year operating it apprently gets cheaper, and as it becomes the default first world fighter, the majority of new weapons development does and will focus on it. It works on carriers if you buy the C or B, its small, and its focus on slow and sneaky rather than fast and agile should by all accounts maximize airframe and engine lifespans. I like european fighters, and i dont think euros should start stocking up on other american offerings for the most part, but the F-35 is really hard to argue against now that America, France, Germany and the UK footed the bill on the teething issues.
